Colorado just won the cup with their best defender in the finals being Bowen Byram.

Thanks Pierre!

I'd trade everything Dorion got in return for Duchene, Stone, Zibanejad and Hoffman (Thomson, Brannstrom, Sokolov, JBD and Gustavsson) for Byram alone, and the Avs also got Girard out of it too.

Amazing the difference a quality GM can make for his team, and how damaging a bad one can be.

Sakic gets a top pair D(Toews) with two 2nds, Dorion trads two 2nds for Stepan and Matt Murray.

Now let's see how good Sakic really is this summer he has a boat load of UFA's to resigned and only one year left on Mackinnon's contract! And also let's face it Colorado had an easy path in the west compare To Tampa Bay in the East. the only good team Colorado face in the first 3 rounds was St-Louis. Nashville and Edmonton were easy pray for Colorado. I dont think Colorad makes it to the Final in they were in the East. Tampa had to face Toronto, Florida and NY Rangers, the fact that Tampa made all the way to the Final for a 3rd time in a row is way more impressive then what Colorado did.

Remember when Colorado had 48 points 5 years ago? Crazy what competent management can do.

You do realize that Colorado has the same GM and head coach from that 48pt season, right?

It goes to show that you should let a GM and coach see their re-build through.

They were on a gradual rise since then and I don’t remember many questionable trades/signings. Dorion’s bad trades/signings outnumber his good ones by a lot.

Who cares? He built towards a Cup and got it. What happenes after doesn’t take away from anything.

Random team wins cup, Sens fans on HFSens find a way to work in shitting on their own team…

Clsasic!
Not as random, there’s definitely a tie in with the Duchene trade between both teams. Also Avs were the worst team in 2017 and here they are. And the sens are where they’re at, both teams kept their GMs and well you can see the difference. Well warranted IMO, we should be striving for a higher bar

Crazy the Avs series in Sweden right after the Duchene trade and MacKinnon was so electric and explosive all series - he became the new identity of that team and Ottawas window had already closed for what is now a really long time.

Convenient to forget the year before that the Avs had 82 points. In that 48 point season their #1 goalie struggled with an injury then missed the last 2/3 of the year. Varlamov ended up having the worst season in his NHL career. Also MacKinnon and Rantanen were just kids and just starting to grow into the NHL careers.

I think a bigger issue was that their head coach decided he'd up a quite the team about a month before camp started. Bednar was a rookie head coach with no NHL experience at all, that needed sort out an NHL system and any changes he wanted to make to his staff with less than a month before training camp started.

The team Sakic took over was a bubble team that had an unfortunate year, it's a different situation than us, we tore everything down and started from pretty much scratch. The expectations in terms of how quickly Sakic turned things around, vs how quick it should have taken Dorion should not be the same.

On the flip side, highlighting the Avs 48 pts season without any context, and trying to play that as evidence of why we should give Dorion more time is just odd. The situations are not at all analogous,

Edmonton didn't look worse than Tampa tbh, they lost twice in ot, had some unlucky decisions against them (Makar offside) and some rough injuries.
Both St. Louis and Edmonton were imo better than the Rangers (who were very lucky against Pit) and arguably Florida, who were simply shit these playoffs.

When your toughest opponent is Toronto, you went on a helluva easy run.
