Random waivers question.
If a playoff team grabs a player off waivers, can they play in the playoffs since it's after the trade deadline?

Or is that rule just for trades?

Any player claimed on waivers or traded after the trade deadline is ineligible to play for the claiming team for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

When did this change? I can tell you with almost certainty, that 2009 and prior, there was no such rule for undrafted, college UFAs.

Also, Danny Dekeyser absolutely played a couple playoff games for Detroit, as well as AHL playoff games, right after signing as an undrafted college UFA. That had to be 2013 or 2014.

As uncleben pointed out, it's purely a timing thing with the trade deadline. Typically college seasons wrap up in March for most teams unless they make the Frozen Four. But sometimes you get a year with a delayed start due to lockout or the pandemic seasons when the trade deadline got pushed back.

If Ben Meyers had signed before the trade deadline last year, he would have been playoff eligible for Colorado. But Meyers was competing in the Frozen Four in early April. A few NCAA guys signed before the 2021 trade deadline but most weren't the types to immediately jump into an NHL playoff roster (Josh Dunne, Alex Steeves, Jordan Kawaguchi, Odeen Tufto, Matt Kiersted, Adam Scheel, Walker Duehr).

It looks like Philadelphia signed Jackson Cates a day after the 2021 deadline. He played in some NHL games down the stretch but would have been ineligible for the playoffs had the Flyers qualified.

Boston signed Marc McLaughlin before the 2022 deadline, so he would have been playoff eligible but they sent him to the AHL playoffs after playing some NHL games. Handful of other guys signed but they were also sent to AHL (Corey Andonovski, Declan Carlile, Taylor Ward, Brandon Scanlin). Out of that bunch, Scanlin was the only one who got an ELC that started immediately; Everybody else signed an AHL ATO with an ELC that started 2022-23.

Well, that is something one does not see often. Going back to play as FA to his ECHL team rather than riding out his final months of ELC

It's not the final months of his ELC, he has another year left. He would have made $155k next year (AHL salary + signing bonus) to play in Chicago's organization. I doubt he'll make that much on his next contract, probably not even in Europe.

Pretty good deal for him. Sucks getting hurt but he got almost a full year of NHL pay he wouldn't have gotten otherwise

Players on SOIR don't receive their full NHL pay. They receive a blended pay rate of their NHL and AHL salaries based on the % of time in the NHL the prior season. Dahlstrom spent 7 of 186 days on a NHL roster last season (3.76%) and 179 days in the minors (96.24%). So his pay scale while on SOIR would be:

3.76% * $750k NHL salary + 96.24% AHL $400k salary = $413,172

So he was essentially receiving a minor bump on his [high end] AHL salary.

Dahlstrom probably would have spent some time on the Leafs' roster, with all the injuries they've had, were he healthy.

If a player gets claimed by a new team after the trade deadline, and the new team waives them and they clear, are they able to play for the new team's AHL affiliate?

I don't believe so. At least not under 13.12(j)(i)

(j) A Player may be Loaned to a club of any league affiliated with the League at any time up to 3:00 p.m. New York time of the fortieth (40th) day immediately preceding the final day of the Regular Season (the "Trade Deadline"). Following this period, no Player may be Loaned, except that:

(i) a Player who has been Recalled during such restricted period under Article 13.12(l), 13.12(m), or 13.12(n) may be Loaned back to the member club of the affiliated league from which they were Recalled;

(ii) a Player who is on the Bona-Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception, or who has been unfit for 24 calendar days and ten (10) NHL Regular Season games, may be Loaned on a Bona-Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception Conditioning Loan (with the Player's consent) pursuant to Section 13.9 above for a period not to exceed the longer of six (6) days and three (3) games (which Loan is not subject to any extension), provided, however, if the Player is not on the Bona-Fide Long Term Injury/Illness Exception, he cannot be Loaned while he is on Injured Reserve; and

(iii) a Player may be Loaned (with the Player's consent) provided such Player (a) was on Recall and was determined to be disabled as of the Trade Deadline, (b) is determined to be fit to play prior to such Loan, and (c) was on the Active Roster for less than twenty-five percent (25%) of the period from the beginning of the Regular Season up to and including the date on which he was determined to be disabled.

Even if the player is eligible to be sent to the AHL, the rule appears to require that the player can only be returned to the same AHL team from which they were Recalled after the deadline.
