Quick Six: Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off

Badgers face Lake Superior State in first tournament matchup

MADISON, Wis. — The Badgers return to action this Wednesday and Thursday in the second annual Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. The Badgers captured the inaugural event last year.

Here are six quick things to know before watching (Tickets):

Rosters: Badgers || Lake Superior State || UMass || Clarkson

1 - KWIK TRIP HOLIDAY FACE-OFF: The Badgers are back at Fiserv Forum to defend their title as Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off champions after Zach Urdahl won it for Wisconsin in the sixth round of a shootout over No. 15 Providence last year.

Wisconsin will face off with Lake Superior State in its first match of the tournament. A win would send them straight to the championship game to face either Clarkson or UMass. ...

5 - SCOUTING THE TOURNAMENT: Lake Superior State is 3-13-2 overall and 2-9-1 in the CCHA conference. They are coming off a series split against then No.17 Michigan Tech, notching a 3-0 shutout win before falling 5-1 the following night.

No. 15 UMass comes into the Holiday Face-Off as the top-ranked team with a 7-6-3 record and 3-6-1 showing against Hockey East opponents. Freshman Kenny Connors leads their roster with seven goals for 17 points in 18 games.

The Clarkson Golden Knights are 7-8-2 and 3-3-2 in ECAC play. ...

In Game #1 of the Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off in Milwaukee, the Clarkson Golden Knights overcame a 3-goal deficit with 6 ... count 'em ... 6 unanswered goals to defeat the UMass Minutemen 6-3. Truly an amazing turnaround. 👏

Holiday Face-Off nightcap, Final Score = Wisconsin Badgers 4 - Lake Superior State Lakers 0. The final UW goal was an empty netter, while their first three goals were the result of the team's speed & relentless play in all 3 zones. LSSU was outplayed in every major stat category tonight, and seemed to be playing to simply not get blown out in the 3rd period.

LSSU will face UMass in the Thursday PM 3rd place game, and Clarkson will play the host & tournament defending champs Wisconsin for the 7:30 PM start of the 2022 Kwik Trip tourney finals. Crowd size was underwhelming on Day #1, but at least the Badgers faithful made some noise to liven up the Fiserv Forum before the lights were shut off. :cheer:

U Mass defeated Lake Superior State 4-1.

No, but she told me that the refs stunk!

She feels that Potsdam has put a curse on her life. She lived in Massena for about 18 months. Everytime she went to or near Potsdam, something bad seemed to happen to her. Now, it has followed her to Milwaukee.

Better to have a cursed daughter than to have a cursing daughter. But I'd prefer they keep either one to themself, especially at family gatherings. :soap:

My daughter would agree with you!

On my first trip to Massena, I met a guy who was bidding on replacing my SIL's roof.
He told me he was a farmer for his regular job. Then we discussed recent articles in the WSJ for 10 minutes.
So he was really a farmer and a roofer who invested wisely. He was one of the very few that I met who was not a LEO or a worker at the casino. The SIL sold the house and moved to Syracuse about 2 years later.

*Team's RPI has been adjusted to remove negative effect from defeating weak opponent.
The PairWise Ranking is a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I men's hockey tournament. The PWR compares all teams by these criteria: record against common opponents, head-to-head competition, and the RPI.
For each comparison won, a team receives one point. The final PWR ranking is based on the number of points (comparisons) won. Ties are settled by the RPI.
A more complete explanation of the workings of the PWR is also available in our FAQ. There is also a FAQ available explaining the NCAA Tournament selection process.
The PWR can be reformatted and redistributed by any media outlet or person, provided USCHO's URL (College Hockey | USCHO.com) accompanies the results.
Note: A team's record is based only on games against other Division I hockey schools which are eligible for the NCAA Tournament.

McMahon: This Week in College Hockey, Jan. 5, 2023

by Mike McMahon/Staff Writer

The NCAA Transformation Committee released its final report this week. The 40-page report makes numerous recommendations, which the Division I board of directors will now consider for inclusion at the 2023 NCAA convention.

One of the biggest proposals was expanding the NCAA Tournament in all sports. For sports with 200 or more schools, the recommendation was that 25 percent of teams qualify. For other sports, it was recommended as many as 50 percent of teams qualify.

Those proposals will be reviewed by several committees, and if they are implemented, the NCAA said it would likely occur with the ’24–25 championship.

For men’s hockey, that could mean as many as 31 teams could qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

In other postseason news, The Gazelle Group, the marketing firm that operates the Kwik Holiday Faceoff in Wisconsin, has proposed a new postseason tournament in college hockey.

The Gazelle Group also runs the College Basketball Invitational, a third-tier tournament for teams not invited to the NCAA Tournament or NIT Tournament.

Gazelle said that hosting quarterfinal and semifinal games would require schools to guarantee the group $30,000 per game. Hosting the finals would require a $40,000 guarantee. ...

Women’s Division I College Hockey: New Year’s resolutions for all 42 teams
