Lindenwood Comes to Life

New Program Has Turned Heads With Menagerie Looking to Prove Themselves

by Brevin Monroe/CHN Reporter

In March 2022, on day one of the ACHA National Tournament, Lindenwood coach Rick Zombo received a phone call at 5:30 a.m. The call was from the University President, John R. Porter, with one simple message: It was time to make the jump to NCAA Division I.

“Then we had to put a schedule together,” Zombo said, who has been the head coach at the university since 2010. “I thought aspirations were high to get 20 [games], we got 30. And the teams that we got are really good. I’m humble as can be that these guys gave us an opportunity.”

While making a schedule can be difficult for many first-year teams, Lindenwood was able to schedule series against some of college hockey’s premier teams, including opening the season at Minnesota and Michigan. The Lions took on Wisconsin last weekend and have two series against other historic programs like North Dakota and Denver yet to come.

While the games against Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin are all going to show in the loss column for the Lions, the team was able to hold a lead against the Badgers until midway through the third and even tied the game with the ranked Gophers early in the third. These victories, while small, prove that Lindenwood is trending in the right direction.

“Those are opportunities that big name schools gave us,” Zombo said. “We prepared well, we played well. We didn't get the outcome that we would've liked, but nobody had those expectations, it was a great experience.” ...

Michigan Slowly Returning to Normalcy After Tumultuous Week

by Joshua Messe/CHN Reporter

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Last weekend, Michigan was swept by Minnesota in Yost Ice Arena.

But, these games were not the clash of top five teams that was promised even a week before. Instead a nearly full-strength Gophers team handled a reeling Michigan squad, in affairs that didn’t reveal much about either’s true strength.

The Wolverines had six regular skaters out, including defenseman Steve Holtz, who was revealed to be hospitalized and on a ventilator via a Facebook post from his family. Dressing as a left wing was reserve goalkeeper Tyler Shea, who had never made an appearance at the position in his college career. And while Shea didn’t play, being activated and dressed indicated the dire circumstances surrounding the roster this weekend.

These absences were the result of illness stemming from the respiratory diseases that have spread throughout Ann Arbor’s campus recently.

In fact, the University’s medical school has sent out two notices to Michigan students, urging the entirety of the campus to be cautious and get their influenza vaccines. ...

But when asked directly whether the team should have played, (Michigan assistant coach Bill) Muckalt was unsure.

“I think without getting into detail, we were right on that threshold,” Muckalt said. “And we found a way to get through it. We’re not the only team that’s dealt with sickness or illness or injuries. But you know, just proud of our guys.” ...

Notes: Little national separation as calendar flips to December

Dominant run for Merrimack’s Ollas; Suter salute in Madison

By Jayson Hajdu

On Monday, the latest USCHO.com Division I men’s hockey poll slotted Denver No. 1 overall, one of six teams garnering first-place votes.

In the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll released that same day, Minnesota was ranked No. 1. Four other teams also received first-place consideration.

Meanwhile, Penn State sits atop the all-important Pairwise rankings.

So, what does it all mean? If anything, it signifies that the national picture, without a singularly dominant team, is completely wide open as the first half winds down. ...

2022-23 Men's NCAA Hockey Power Rankings

Nov 30, 2022 by Chris Peters ...

Chris Peters provides his weekly power rankings for NCAA Division I Men's Hockey

1. Minnesota | Last Ranking 2
Record: 11-5-0

A weekend split with Arizona State on the road didn't stop the Gophers from moving up, but even in the national polls it's getting harder to determine who is No. 1. The Gophers are still one of the country's deepest and most talented teams, but the parity across the college hockey landscape has made it so anybody can beat anybody it seems. Six different teams received first-place votes in both of the major men's college hockey polls. The Gophers are tops for now, but like Midwestern weather -- stick around, it's probably going to change.

2. Penn State | Last Ranking: 4

Record: 13-3-0

A sweep of Alaska doesn't necessarily move the needle in terms of Penn State's status, but the fact that their only losses over their first 16 games are to teams we have ranked presently shows that Penn State is taking care of business when they need to. They generate more shots on goal than any other team in the nation and they are making every team work to stay competitive with them. These Nittany Lions seem to constantly have to prove themselves and we talked about the legitimacy of their contender status on Talking Hockey Sense this week. ...

3. Quinnipiac | Last Ranking: 7
Record: 10-1-3

A trip to Belfast for the Friendship Four led to the Bobcats coming home with some hardware. Though their result against UMass goes down as a tie in the record, they won the Belpot Trophy in a shootout. QU has not lost since Oct. 22 and is unbeaten in nine straight games. They've had balanced scoring and goaltender Yaniv Perets has been especially consistent in net with a .920 save percentage. They're getting first-place votes in the polls now and they deserve them. ...

Very unfortunate incident in the 3rd period of Saturday's Niagara U @ Army game. Niagara freshman Glebs Prohorenkovs (forward from Latvia) was released from the penalty box & scored the insurance goal in what ended as a 4-2 Purple Eagles victory to split the weekend. As Prohorenkovs skated past the Black Knights' bench toward his own, he made a mock salute to the West Point team. 2 minute misconduct, 10 minutes & an ejection, and hopefully a U.S. military code lesson ahead for the young man. If he made it to the team bus before the Army fans saw him. :nono:

The Uniform Code of Military Justice only applies to those in the military.

That said, I’d bet the Niagara coaches read him the riot act over that stunt. If he had done that on the Friday night of a two-game set, he‘d be asking for real trouble on Saturday.

LIU Continues to Check the Boxes

Win Over Ohio State Was Another Step For the Program

by Dylan Pescatore/CHN Reporter

With anything new, it takes time to grow and prosper. That could be said about the Long Island Sharks, which recently checked one of the boxes of goals they had when the program started.

The Sharks took down Ohio State last Friday night, 3-2, at Northwell Health Ice Center. It was the program's first victory against a ranked opponent. The Sharks are about halfway through their third year of being a program, and the victory was a huge step towards proving themselves to the world. ...

Getting better every game is what fuels this team, and now with the feeling of success winning against Ohio State last weekend, it motivates them even more to get the next one.

Adam Goodsir scored the game-winning goal Friday in the 3-2 victory, a transfer from Michigan State for his graduate year.

“A great thing about this program and one of the biggest reasons I came here is the coaches' ability to develop players, and move them on to pro hockey,” Goodsir said. ...

2022-23 Men's NCAA Hockey Power Rankings
(Dec 7, 2022) by Chris Peters ...

1. Minnesota | Last Ranking 1
Record: 13-5-0

The Gophers pulled off a strong road sweep of Michigan State last weekend, scoring 11 goals over the two games combined, while allowing just three. I've thought from the very beginning of the season that Minnesota has the best team on paper in terms of talent and depth. With wins in eight of their last 10, they're starting to play like it more than they did earlier this season. They're about to lose several players to the World Junior Championship, but they'll only miss a max of three games -- possibly only one. ...

3. Quinnipiac | Last Ranking: 3
Record: 12-1-3

Unbeaten since October 22, the Bobcats continue to roll. They're a perfect 8-0-0 in ECAC play and matched a season-high with six goals against Clarkson in their last game. Winning consistently has been a real challenge for top teams, but that has not been true of Quinnipiac. Head coach Rand Pecknold is about to leave to coach the U.S. National Junior Team at World Juniors, but the Bobcats have looked like a well-oiled machine and he'll be back before their schedule gets a bit tougher.

3. Denver | Last Ranking: 4
Record: 12-4-0

The Pioneers earned a non-conference sweep at home against Arizona State. Denver massively outshot the Sun Devils in both contests, posting 99 shots on goal over the two games combined. With wins in six of their last seven, the Pioneers are starting to roll a bit again. The back half of their schedule is a bear and they could be short a few defensemen for a few games due to Sean Behrens and Shai Buium being called to USA's World Junior Camp. Either way, the defending national champs have continued to prove their status among the top tier. ...

The unranked Bowling Green State Falcons hosted #14 Ohio State on Friday night in the first of a home state home-and-home pair this weekend. BGSU kept up in a high paced & very chippy game, and managed to tie the Buckeyes @ 2-2 with a power play goal by senior forward Taylor Schneider 7:20 into the 3rd period. But that woke up the OSU offense, who netted 3 unanswered tallies mid-period in a span of just 54 seconds to record a 5-2 victory.

Lindenwood gave the defending champs a scare tonight, but came up short on a late DU goal. Once again they hung in with another top team, and in this case the top team.
