Oh I don't think production is the end all, be all... just that if there is none or low, it is a bad sign. You won't find many forwards who have produced at a .3-.4 or lower in the AHL and have a career in the NHL that is beyond a 4th liner. There has to be some level of skill and finish to even make the NHL today. Years ago he could have punched faces to make it... we don't really have those types any more. This year is a small sample and he's played better than 2 in 12 would suggest... but if there isn't some level of production, it is concerning. Small samples though and that can easily shift with a good few games.I am a believer that AHL point totals also don't really dictate if a player will make it or not though. Foremost, I am in full agreement with you that you want to see annual improvement for a player on the scoresheet like we've seen with Sampo Ranta in his three years progressively getting better or the Canucks has had with Kole Lind at eliteprospects.com . However, there is no doubt in my mind that Bowers will be better if he was at Jost's role in the NHL than all the countless amount of freebies that Tyson has been able to get from the FO and coaching staff. He's simply in the NHL because of his draft position alone and nothing else. Shane might not be as productive right now, but that's due to his young age compared to anything else (and I am not a huge Bowers fan). I keep going back to my Shattenkirk example showing that you don't need to be on the scoresheet to earn a call up and then set a game point streak for a rookie defender. Again, I don't think Bowers has done anything to be worthy of a call up, but I also don't think it's because he's a bust...he's still one of the youngest players on the Eagle/AHL trying to understand the toughest position in hockey (even if he might be on the wing currently).
Defensemen don't equate to forwards, but more than that small samples create more outliers. If Shatty would have played the full season in the AHL, he would have produced. That said, you're right and there are ways to earn callups beyond points (actually would say points are pretty low on the list).
I'm in no way saying Bowers is a bust or that it is over or that he should or will never play in the NHL... just that he needs to be better. He can play better down there and needs to so he can get a shot.
Jost has gotten preferential treatment that many wouldn't get, but his biggest advantage was being a marketing tool at the end of a horrendous season.. then cast as part of the solution. On bad teams, more fringe players can establish and build trust. As teams get better, it becomes harder to break into the lineup. If Jost was coming up today, he probably wouldn't play a few games at the end of the season and wouldn't break camp. Fair or not, making a good team is more difficult than making a bad team.
