2022-03-16 Joe Masonius (D) Utica ADD Recalled from loan to Adirondack (ECHL)

Wonder if this means Okhotiuk is not expected back for Saturday.

I was thinking something like that. Masonius is Penguins property anyway.

Other possibility is to make room for the new NCAA signees, but Masonius was leading Adirondack D in points.

Fort Wayne is playoffs bound. Maybe they're doing him a favor?
He left a bad taste in my mouth during preseason. He took a terrible open ice head shot on a Syracuse Crunch player and was suspended by the AHL but the suspension didn't carry down to the ECHL so he was allowed to play from game one in Adirondack. I get that he was trying to make an impression in Utica during a preseason game but that kind of crap is uncalled for.

Some said similar about Greer in his NHL call up last season.

No worry. They will just call up one of those top D they have been seasoning as depth all season in Adirondack. Can't beat the depth this club has. :sarcasm:

Seriuously, they will have somebody from somewhere to act as a depth D-man and a depth forward when they arrive in Pennsylvania Saturday. At least they should. The forward will be necessary because without Deleo and Foote they will be down to 12 forwards meaning the All-Star McGrath, whose best play is to tip passes deep into the other team's end so his line can change up, will be back in the lineup.

Gautheir, who had been playing his best hockey up to the Belleville game, was neutered centering Laberge and McGrath.

Forwards Chase De Leo and Nolan Foote and defenseman Nikita Okhotiuk each missed Tuesday’s game.

They are not likely to be in the lineup Saturday, Dineen said.

De Leo “tweaked” something in a game a week ago and the team wants him to be healthy given the upcoming schedule.

The plan is to have him skate Friday and “see where he’s at,” Dineen said.

Okhotiuk is dealing with the flu, which has been going around the city according to a team doctor, Dineen said.

“We’re trying make sure to get his energy a little higher,” Dineen said.

Foote has an upper-body injury and it is “something he’s dealt with before,” according to Dineen.

“It is nothing we’re too concerned about,” he said.

Taking a look at the weekend set of games, there is the Saturday game with the Utica Comets which looms largest. Taking nothing away from Friday’s opponent, Syracuse, but Utica has been the class of the field in the Eastern Conference all season. Check it out, speaking within the confines of the Eastern Conference only:

.717 win percentage – second best team (Springfield) has a .634

12 regulation losses – second best teams (Providence and Springfield) have 17.

Second in the Conference in goals for at 189 (Charlotte has 195 but have played five more games) – league leader Ontario have 203 (with two less games played than the Comets, who have played 53 games)

144 goals against, pitting them second in the Conference to Providence who have only let in 142 (with one less game played)

Special teams aren’t anything spectacular, but when you are boat racing teams with goal differential, who cares?

So the moral of the story is that Utica is going to play Final Boss in the Conference and while the Penguins most likely have to get through a best of three play in series, then a division semifinal and final before you even hope to get to the Comets, Utica is going to be a measuring stick to see how the Penguins can fare in the postseason.

The Setup

Utica is going to be well rested, having beat the Belleville Senators this past Tuesday 3-2 in overtime.

The Pens swept the weekend behind hot play in goal by Louis Domingue, winning 6-2 and 4-2 over Laval and Hartford, respectively.

The Records

Pens are sixth in the Atlantic Division, two games over .500, with a 25-23-4-4 record with a .518 points percentage.

Utica, highly discussed in the open, have a stunning 35-12-6-0 record and a .717 points percentage in first in the North.

Who’s Up, Who’s Down, Who’s Out?

Radim Zohorna is in the NHL. Jamie Devane and Chris Bigras are back from their injuries. Taylor Fedun missed last weekend again and Filip Lindberg is out for the year.

Who’s in Goal?

No reason to believe it won’t be Louis Domingue in both games for the Penguins this weekend. Expect the starters for the Crunch and Comets, being Hugo Alnefelt for Syracuse and Akira Schmid for the Comets.

What can we learn about the Penguins this week?

How they handle a desperate but hot team in Syracuse, who are in a battle for their playoff lives and how the stack up against the absolute best team they will play in the regular season in the Utica Comets.

Things come easy these days for Utica, who conceivably should swat the Pens away like a fly. Wilkes-Barre played the Comets to a shootout loss the last time these teams played in December when Wilkes-Barre’s lineup was COVID depleted.

Do the Penguins sweep these two teams then take off to Canada next week and win just one of the four games scheduled?

They play better when Alex Nylander is in the lineup, Valtteri Puustinen is on, when the power play is cooking and they get better than average goaltending. Now, they have exceptional goaltending in Louis Domingue and all of the other usual suspects in play. Conceivably, Wilkes-Barre are competitive in both contests and put themselves in position to win both.

Give us a bold prediction…

The Penguins shutout the Comets on Saturday.

Do any of these other teams have any number of actual NHL prospects? It seems that I am seeing two or maybe three legit prospects on any number of AHL rosters. At least Utica has no less than 10 guys who are prospects and maybe more as opposed to the tweeners and has beens and never will bes you see on so many of the other teams.

The NHL’s trade deadline looms Monday afternoon. It is possible the Devils could make moves to help the Comets’ roster.

“I told (the team) until the trade deadline passes on Monday we can’t really commit or know what the scenario will be. But in a perfect world there’s some support from the NHL roster,” MacKinnon said.

The team will have a few players eligible for the rest of the AHL season and playoffs including goaltender Nico Daws and Tyce Thompson (working back from injury), MacKinnon said. It is more tricky with players who need to clear waivers in order to join Utica, including defenseman Colton White.

“We think the core is solid there. We think we can accomplish things as a group,” MacKinnon said.

No Mercer (or Smith, but we already knew that). If Daws is sent down, NJ still needs two active G on the roster. Either Blackwood is activated, a trade is made, or Schmid comes up and doesn't play in the postseason.*
