From the article, he has played five years of NCAA hockey, so has no eligibility left to protect. This way he gets paid for the games. ATO's only get per diem and housing so they keep their eligibility if they are planning on going back to school.
I've never seen a player return to the NCAA after signing a ATO and playing pro. With the NCAA rules being so strict, I don't think it is even allowed.

The only time I've seen this rule apply is for goaltenders from USports (Canadian universities) acting as emergency backups.

I don't have any specific references, but that's the way it was explained to me by a former GM. I'd have to go back and look to see if I can find specific examples, but I'm sure it has happened with the Royals where a player signed to play a few games at the end of their junior year, and then went back to school for their senior year. I also remember at least one player who came and played over his spring break and returned to school the same year. I'm not sure with that one if his hockey season was over, and he was just going back to finish classes, or if he still had games left to play that year. It's been a few years, but I used to arrange travel for players to and from the airports before Uber/Lyft were available,
These are typically undrafted free agents, some D1, some D3 players (and some USports), so not the same pool of players that are typically signing in the AHL.

Olsen couldn't secure a regular spot with the Heat. He was limited to 1 goal in 17 games.

Was on a AHL contract with Manitoba.

Hickey join the Reign but will remain part of NYI's reserve list. LA drafted Hickey 4th overall in 2007.
