That cycling Omnium is so bizarre. Weird to see a “race” where people are kind of sandbagging certain laps and saving up for sprint laps to score points. What ever happened to just racing to cross the finish line first?

Cycling has all sorts of arbitrary races. Keirin, Madison, etc.

btw, if you ever wondered how popular Christine Sinclair is with her club teammates in Portland:

I don't think any of them are even Canadian, so this is purely happiness for their teammate.

I'm awake so I'm watching the closing ceremonies. A lot of athletes having fun. Then the organizers had this spectacular light show using light photons. Then, the CBC decides to run commercials and I don't know how it went after the photons formed the Olympic rings.

Then the orchestra did an old Japanese pop song. I wish I knew the name of it because the music was quite catchy and that the vocals were in Japanese and performed by a singer who had a light lyrical voice.

Those who watched the Women's soccer final live were lucky. I woke up to the results ,watched the replay of the penalty kicks and later today, watched the full game. It was thrilling every single time. I can only imagine watching this live. Truly a special moment in Canadian Olympic history. Definitely put this in the top 5 for me. Only other events that brought me this kind of emotion were as follows.

1) 2010 Golden goal hockey game. ( It was like the moon landing for Canadians. Otherworldly)
2) Ben Johnson's win and disqualification in the 88 Olympics. (Emotional high that carried over into the next day then totally devastated)
3) Donovan Bailey's 1996 100m final win & Relay win. ( Amazing feeling from both. Very proud)
4) 2014 Gold Medal Comeback game from Can women's hockey team vs US. ( Couldn't believe what I was seeing)
5) 2021 Tokyo CAN vs Sweden Women's soccer match. Only one I didn't see live but even on replay brought out emotions and a feeling that anything is possible.
Watched it live on our back deck. Left for work at the end of the game and watched the penalty shots at work.

The goal is to finish ahead. So you can fill your boots with whatever strategy you like. Also, you’re not running one race. Lots of races. If you have to go full out to win anything but the final, it’s going to be a lot harder to win it all.

I just looked up what's going with Beijing. It's cancelled all large-scale events for the rest of the month due to a Corona outbreak. As, well, a bi-partisan panel of US lawmakers are calling for moving or cancelling the games due to the Chinese geocide of Uyghurs and other minority Muslim people. They're also calling for a boycott if the demands are not done by the IOC.

Canada should follow suit but I think the Bearded Potato will suck up to China.

U.S. lawmakers urge IOC to delay or move China's 2022 Winter Olympics

Closing ceremonies were sleep inducing. Never saw the opening but this was nothing. For sure no fans in attendance just makes this entirely sleepy but that was not worth watching. Best part was the Paris segment and the Jets painting the France flag around the Eiffel tower.

Kind of fitting though. Japan as a host just added no flavor at all to the games. Telecasts were weird too in that they didn't invoke any sense of the place, where the games, venues were or some background features. It was like kind of a cardboard cutout games generic hosting. Could do without cringeworthy japanese musical acts. Japanese rock? whats that.

lmao at 15secs of fireworks at the end. You gotta be kidding me. Thats it?

Looks like I'm not alone. Apparently there was some movement to have the Japan opening and closing ceremonies be subdued. Well whats the point then, these are supposed to be celebrations.

Opening ceremonies was also panned. One of the worst.

That said I just don't get Japanese entertainment of any kind. Japanese culture just seems so dull.

What a bullet it was. No goalie is stopping that one, men or women. She had a big tournament for a sub. Responsible for getting the penalty Kick call in US game as well with her good speed at flank. What a horse too. Beating defenders one on one pretty easy and using size to protect the ball. Walked into the box a few times last night. Setup what should have been a goal in the first half for Canada.

I prefer Leon and Rose playing more. They're both worth it. Time to park punters like Beckie, jmo

Beckie isn't a punter. She's one of Canada's most technically skilled players. This tournament wasn't her best, however I believe she's coming off injury too. She's someone you put Rose and Leon around, so they can use their pace to take advantage of her ball skills and playmaking.

Let's not forget she helped create one of the best international goals Canada has ever scored:

Touch inside, knocked the ball up, then crossed it inch perfect with the outside of her foot while the ball was in the air. Even the hometown neutral Brazilian fans in the crowd applauded that one.

I wish the 2012/2016 teams had better defensive play, because the offensive movement on those teams was something else. Tancredi/Sinclair/Beckie/Schmidt were all fantastic.

5yrs ago and right now she has no pace, poor decisions and can't even execute an even remotely dangerous corner kick. Outside one game she was completely useless through the whole tournament, easy to play against, easily stripped, and weak on the pitch. Leon and Rose protect the ball much better, use their size, speed and are better in every regard now than Beckie.

Beckie will typically play one good game and several others where you wonder how she's a starter. her game hasn't evolved.

You're basing your opinion of her off one tournament. She's 26 years old and coming off an injury which almost prevented her from playing in the Olympics. Very likely she hasn't even hit her prime yet.

She's scored 33 goals in 81 games for Canada, that's good for 5th ALL TIME, lol. One behind Kara Lang. At age 26. "Her game hasn't evolved" and calling her a punter when she's going to be a key player for Canada for the foreseeable future is wrong imo. In actuality she's got a decent chance of becoming one of Canada's all-time best players.

So many of the plays go to Beckie that she should have way more goals than she does. By her own account she has struggled to score for years and having lots of trouble finishing chances. Indeed much of the story with Canada the last number of years has been real difficulty scoring goals.

Janine Beckie was hailed as an heir apparent for Sinclair. Obviously she isn't a fraction of that.

"key player" lol. Canada is going nowhere after Sinclair if we're riding on Beckie. She was nothing except for the Chile game and she was pulled in the final because she was playing so awful. Not myself thinking this alone either. Critiques of her dismal corner kicks were constant in the broadcasts. She can't even get a corner kick in the same timezone of where its supposed to be. She was making poor decisions, got a yellow card, and risked getting red carded. They basically had to sub her before she cost Canada. Not sure where her head was at.

Never been a fan of the player. Weak, easily pushed off the ball, doesn't protect space well. All she's good at is getting chances when the coverage is abysmal to non existent. Which fortunately for her happens once in awhile in Womens Soccer.

Without all the spot on penalty kicks from Fleming Canada goes nowhere in this tournament. Fleming was at least noticeable. Leon instantly gave Sweden more trouble and was by default better on the corner kicks.
