So the way I hope this plays out is we win a lottery pick, Chicago and Montreal win, yotes lose and we pick 1&8. If that happens, I couldn’t care less what happens to the Vancouver pick.

aside from the lottery winners it will go by points percentage.

Right now, they have teams sorted in this order:

8. Team A
9. Team B
10. Team C
11. Team D
12. Team E
13. Team F
14. Team G
15. Team H

Let's say Team B wins a top three spot. Is that Phase II draw going to be drawing out every spot from 8-15? Or is it just going to be a 12.5% chance at that lottery pick and then after that the teams will seed themselves 9-15 based on regular season points percentage?

It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if both picks slid to unprotected 2021 1sts.

Vancouver and Arizona aren't exactly powerhouse teams. Wouldn't be surprising to see them both miss the playoffs next year.
Next year is allegedly going to be a very good draft for defensemen. So, we draft Laf this year, we have one more rough year along with Arizona and Vancouver leaving us with the top three next year. Then we draft Raty, Power and Hughes next year solidifying our dynasty lol

If Team B wins a top three spot, all the play-in losers will have a 12.5% chance at that pick and someone has to win that pick from the group and the winner will occupy Team B's spot. The rest just get sorted by order of standings.

We really shouldn't look to suck again next year. Not that we're going to be cup contenders, but the goal should be to be competitive and challenge for a playoff spot.

Flipping expendable assets for immediate help (especially at defense) should be the goal of this off-season. We have a great deal of forwards right now that we could afford to trade one or two, even if it's swapping a guy like Wood for the equivalent defender (McCabe?) or swapping someone like Seney for a similar defender in a logjam (Gabriel Carlsson?).

Hopefully with some competent coaching and a few shrewd additions, with the growth of guys like Nico, Hughes, Bratt, Boqvist and maybe a surprise like Foote or other prospect, we could be a bubble team next year and draft anywhere from 10-15...hopefully the yotes and nucks crap out.

I am not disagreeing with your post, but the Devils did that last offseason and it clearly did not help them win. I actually think the Gusev move will pay big dividends this year since he should be more consistent this year.

Well yeah. Part of the issue last season is it seemed like we made it an emphasis to add skill to an already skilled group. Emphasis this off-season should be to add glue guys for those skilled players to play with.

I personally see the Coyotes and Canucks picks as bonus picks. We don't really need them from a prospect perspective aside from defensive prospects for down the road. More pressing need is immediate help around the youth especially on defense.

Devils added more skill to young skilled players rather than adding guys to bring the skilled players together. Which is fine, we needed more skill. Now, we have the skill, we just need the Edmundsson players on defense or the Palat types on offense.

We were in a good situation to do that with the 1sts this year. Hopefully, COVID doesn't mess things up for us there.

Unfortunately, next year’s draft is considerably weak. ( At least on paper) There isn’t a clear #1, maybe it’s Raty but he is another solid but not super prospect. While it’s nice to have 75% of the top ten be defenseman, how good are they really? It also sucks that the Devils traded away many of their picks from this draft.

That was cuz of Hynes, Shero did the right moves imo.

@Quest for Stanley won't like that. ;)

But seriously, in order to trade for defenders that are ready to play NOW, the Devils should be looking into trading players who are both useful (in some respects to other teams) but expendable (for us). I think any defenseman we can acquire from another team would be better than what we have now.

i'm willing to take on some bad contracts (not extra long term) if it comes with a solid defender

wondering if the economic issues are going to hurt internal caps for some teams, requiring them to shed cap

A hypothetical Seney deal would be someone like Gabriel Carlsson. #29 overall back in 2015. Stepped into the Blue Jackets lineup in 2016-17 and played in 5 playoff games. He hasn't developed much since and struggled to find playing time since and has gotten passed by Gavrikov and Peake on the depth chart.

More than likely he's another Mueller, but it's a risk the Devils should take.

The Devils made the right moves last offseason but the season went down the crapper after the 2nd period of game #1.

We had a coach who lost his room after that same game, our best player was acting like a little bitch, Schneider was flat out horrible and adding a bunch of new faces takes time for a team to completely gel together.

If the Bolts are stuck, I can see us a prime option to "help them out". We’re moving in the right direction and this offseason can help us out in a very big way.

It’s very frustrating not having a clue where we will pick in the draft.
What could really suck and is somewhat depressing if it happened - we slide down any spots with our pick , Coyotes pick slides , Vancouver pick moves to next year , and we have to wait until January 2021 for Devils regular season hockey.....
It would be less painful waiting that long if we knew we had Lafrenier on the team.
