Another thing that game showed is that we shouldn't be buying backups anymore. Only very expensive players who can displace starters from our first XI. Larouci and Williams are good backup fullbacks. Jones and Elliott are ready to play more.
Whilst that's always tempting for the club and in their financial interest, and those players might even go along with it, eventually it's often not the best choice for those youngsters. Two or or three years goes buy, and they're not that young anymore and they don't have a single season as starters behind them. Whilst a new batch of younger guys have emerged and are the talk of the town instead. Not to mention guys who have played between 60 - 90 games as starters in a decent level league.
I'd rather have estalished late 20's/early 30's guys as back ups, those guys won't get any better but you know what you get with them at what cost, without ruining your potential first team youngsters. It's a more expensive strategy, but you could still make it work. Chelsea has had some success stories with this strategy lately, albeit somewhat forced by the transfer ban.
