Randy Moss with better reasoning on Tiz the Law than Jerry Bailey. 4 weeks should be the perfect amount of time to have a horse ready for a race he was pointing to

Kentucky Downs will operate September 7, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 16. Average daily purses will be $2 million. Many serious handicappers have an affinity for this track's annual brief meet which is run on turf. It is a test of one's abilities to prognosticate the tremendous cards. Take out is low, which is profitable for the bettor, and big fields entice the consumers. The purses attract some of the biggest talents in North America.

Kentucky Downs is located in Franklin, Kentucky (Central Time Zone) about 45 miles north of Nashville, Tennessee.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Total handle today was over $22 million to bring the meet mark to roughly $630+ million entering tomorrow's finale.
  • Race 6: So Gracious (Jose Lezcano/Brittany Russell) shocked the locals by winning at 35-to-1 and paid $73.50. The filly had two previous starts at Saratoga without success but was coming off a win at Laurel in which she broke her maiden in her eighth try. And the inquiry came and went. Russell, a former assistant to Brad Cox now based in Maryland and who is Sheldon Russell's wife, is 2-for-5 at the Spa. Not too shabby.

  • Race 9: Vequist (Luis Saez/Butchy Reid), a daughter to Nyquist, broke her maiden by winning the $250,000 Grade I Spinaway. The filly was purchased for $120,000 last year. She finished second at Parx with Frankie Pennington on board. The Philadelphia based trainer won with his first starter at the meet. The filly broke her maiden in a Grade I, not something that happens every day. Esplanade (Junior Alvarado/Timothy Hamm), the runner up, had three starts and won each as the favorite and all at Ohio tracks. The top two were overlooked by handicappers and the $1 exacta in a short field was $51.25.

  • Race 10: Come Dancing (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Carlos Martin) won the Grade 2 $150,000 Honorable Miss Handicap. The 6-year-old mare, winless this year, improved to 18 9-3-0.

  • Race 11: Battle Station (Kendrick Carmouche/Rob Atras) won the $85,000 Lucky Coin. The 5-year-old gelding was the only New York-bred and was the longest shot on the board.
  • Ortiz brothers: The brothers put on a show with Jose winning the first three races and four total while Irad won twice.
  • Riders' standings: Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Jose Ortiz are tied with 57 wins going into the finale. Should we be surprised? Jose won the 2019 title -- his third in the past four years -- with 60 wins clinching on the final day.
  • Trainers' standings: Todd Pletcher has a 5-win lead over Chad Brown (31 to 26) entering the finale. Brown had a 20-win advantage in 2019 over Pletcher and won his third title in the past four years. Brown has five starters tomorrow and does not appear to be able to defend his title.
  • Belmont Park: The fall meet runs September 18 - November 1. Aqueduct then commences.
Del Mar (California):
  • Umberto Rispoli, winless with nine mounts yesterday, had four victories and now has a 1-win lead over Flavien Prat for the meet lead. The meet ends tomorrow.
  • Handle: $12 million+.

Simulcast facilities remain the best option. Live tracks or its partners, the facilities, are unparalleled for the sport of racing.

Derby Most-Watched Sporting Event Since Super Bowl - BloodHorse

NBC Sports' presentation of the rescheduled 146th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) Sept. 5 ranked as the most-watched sporting event since Super Bowl LIV in February and the most-watched sporting event on Labor Day weekend since 2017, based on fast national data from Nielsen and digital data from Adobe Analytics.

The Triple Crown race averaged a preliminary total audience delivery of 8.4 million viewers across NBC and NBC Sports Digital. The TAD numbers aim to count views on linear broadcast and cable channels as well as mobile, tablets, and connected TVs. It also measures viewership across broadcast and cable TV, as well as social and digital media with the goal of delivering advertisers a single viewer.

In addition, 9.8 million viewers watched on NBC as Authentic crossed the finish line 1 1/4 lengths ahead of favorite Tiz the Law at Churchill Downs.

Monday, September 7, 2020 (Labor Day):
  • Steve Asmussen is 13 wins shy of becoming the second trainer in history to record 9,000 career wins.
  • Bill Mott was sensational today going 7 4-1-1 at two tracks (Saratoga and Laurel).
  • Todd Pletcher is 24 wins shy of 5,000. He entered horses at three tracks and won at each.
  • Chad Brown entered horses at three tracks and won at each. In addition to victories in Kentucky, Maryland and New York, he won yesterday in New Jersey.
  • South Florida Update: I have been told that Gulfstream Park West (nee Calder) is expected to run this year in its final season. The commitment between Gulfstream and Churchill Downs was to expire following this year's meet but there will be no cancellations or modifications based on the virus or other issues. The fall meet usually ends around Thanksgiving. GPW gives Gulfstream a respite in order to maintain track courses. What happens after this year is anyone's guess. If Gulfstream increases its meet (maybe 3 days a week during the fall), shuts down for those weeks (unlikely) or goes elsewhere (Hialeah -- a pipe dream perhaps) is unknown.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Closing day, total handle for the meet: $27,000,000+ bet today. The total for the annual 40-day meet was $702,535,468 which is the second highest total in track history.
  • On deck: Belmont opens September 18.
  • Card: 14 races.
  • Race 13: Jackie's Warrior (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) romped in the $250,000 Grade I Hopeful Stakes. The colt is 3-for-3 lifetime and 2-for-2 at the Spa. Follow this boy. He looked sharp. He did 7 furlongs on dirt in 1:21.29 which was 49 seconds off the track record, again in just his third start. Among prior winners of the Hopeful, which was inaugurated in 1904, are Afleet Alex, Favorite Trick, Dehere, Gulch, Timely Writer, Affirmed, Secretariat, Buckpasser, Nashua and Native Dancer. This list is lengthy.

  • Riding champ: Irad Ortiz, Jr. with 59 wins defeated his brother Jose who had 58 wins. Both riders were 21% and Irad earned slightly more at $4.4 million.
  • Trainers' title: Todd Pletcher won the title with 32 victories. The man reclaimed his throne. Last year's winner was Chad Brown who dominated with 41 wins to Pletcher's runnerup total of 21. Pletcher did not have a good day at 13 1-1-3 but the championship must have been rewarding.
  • Bill Mott had a 3-win day.
  • Junior Alvarado: Maybe I lit a virtual firecracker in his direction the other by mentioning he had lost 40 straight races. Since then, he won seven times including three races today to close the meet with seven victories in the last three days. He finished with the eighth most wins at the meet. Oh, and maybe most significantly, he was held up after an inquiry-objection placed by Irad Ortiz, Jr.; Joel Rosario would have been put up. Again, Junior Alvarado got the benefit of a doubt...at New York. Alert the authorities. Color me shocked. Junior isn't Paco Lopez but he doesn't get too many breaks.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Handle: $2.5 million.
  • Joe Bravo won three times. Jersey Joe is tied for third in the meet in victories.
  • Race 4: A 40-to-1 bomber was DQ'd from victory. Otherwise, the top three would have been 40-to-1, 21-1 and 23-1.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Handle: $1.5 million with an attractive card.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Alexander Crispin won three times. He maintains a 5-pound bug.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: A strong card with powerful connections represented. Five races held purses of $100,000.
  • Handle: $2 million.
  • Trainers: Bill Mott, Todd Pletcher and Shug McGaughey, all members of the National Hall of Fame, and Chad Brown, who will eventually be elected, all won today.
  • Race 9: Grand Cru Classe (Julian Pimentel/Bill Mott) won the $100,000 race which offered an automatic invitation to the Black-Eyed Susan. The filly is 3-for-3 and had won at Gulfstream and Belmont.
  • Race 7: Happy Saver (Trevor McCarthy/Todd Pletcher) won the $100,000 Federico Tesio and with it received an invitation to the Preakness Stakes. The colt is 3-f0r-3 lifetime and had won under Irad Ortiz, Jr. previously at Belmont and Saratoga.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgar Prado won twice which doesn't happen often these days. He is the 8th winningest rider in North America annals with 7.075 wins.
Kentucky Downs (Kentucky):
  • Opening day: The unique track in the U.S. has been compared with those in Europe.
  • Meet: Six days and $16,000,000 in purses.
  • Handle: Over $7.8 million bet for the opener.
  • Handicapping: Good luck!
  • Tyler Gaffalione got off to a quick start with three victories.
  • Chad Brown and Brad Cox each trained two winners.
  • Race 1: Mud Pie (Julien Leparoux/Rusty Arnold) won as the favorite.
  • Race 2: Holiday Stone (Tyler Gaffalione/Eddie Kenneally) won at 10-to-1.
  • Race 3: Fluffy Socks (Tyler Gaffalione/Chad Brown), a 2-year-old filly, won at 7-to-2.
  • Race 4: Strut the Ring (Shaun Bridgmohan/Matt Shirer) won at 7-to-2.
  • Race 5: Royal Prince (Shaun Bridgmohan/Brad Cox), a 2-year-old colt, won. The race was declared a no contest when multiple starters were left in the gate (no pay outs).
  • Race 6: Secure Connections (Julien Leparoux/Shug McGaughey) won at 10-to-1.
  • Race 7: More Than Usual (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won at 7-to-2.
  • Race 8: Plum Ali (Tyler Gaffalione/Christophe Clement) won the $500,000 Mint Juvenile Fillies as the favorite. The filly was purchased for just $65,000 and has already earned $331,000.
  • Race 9: Dalika (Miguel Mena/Albert Stall) won the $300,000 race at 6-to-1. German-breds finished 1-2.
  • Race 10: Barrister Tom (Tyler Baze/Michael Ann Ewing) won the $500,000 More Than Ready Juvenile at 44-to-1 and paid $90.00. The trainer has just 60 lifetime wins but that has to be her biggest victory ever.

  • Race 11: Flavius (Javier Castellano/Chad Brown) won the $750,000 Tourist Mile at 4-to-1. Flavius completed the win with a track record time for the mile on turf in 1:32.21 easily defeating the prior mark of 1:35.00.
Prairie Meadows (Iowa):
  • Race 3: Quarterhorses come from states that often times don't produce many T-bred runners. In this race, QH were foaled in North Dakota, Nebraska and Alabama.
Ruidoso Downs (New Mexico):
  • Race 10: Whistle Stop Cafe (Ricky Ramirez/Blane Wood) won the Grade I $3,000,000 All-American Quarter Horse Futurityin the closing day at the track.
Del Mar (California):
  • Closing day, total handle for the meet: $466.6 million, including $15.6 million today, was wagered during the 27-day meet. The total handle is an increase of $34.7 million compared to the $431.98 million wagered during the 2019 summer meet.
  • On deck: Santa Anita opens September 19.
  • Top rider: Flavien Prat, with two victories, overtook Umberto Rispoli, to claim the riders' title by one victory (50 to 49). Rispoli, in less than a year into his first attempt to ride in America, was outstanding throughout the meet.
  • Top trainer: Peter Miller won comfortably with 28 wins.
  • Who produced? Tarantino won. Spielberg did not.
  • Race 3: Tarantino (Tiago Pereira/Bob Baffert), a $610,000 purchase, won his debut.
  • Race 10: Dr. Schivel (Flavien Prat/Luis Mendez) won the Grade I $250,000 Del Mar Futurity and once again defeated Spielberg (Drayden Van Dyke/Bob Baffert), a $1,000,000 purchase, the latter who was out for the second time. Dr. Schivel now moves into the Mark Glatt barn after an ownership change. Mendez, who is the horse"s exercise rider, earned his first graded stakes victory. Baffert has won this race a record 14 times but not today.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Justin Stein has done the unthinkable and after a 3-win day has tied Rafael Hernandez with 74 victories atop the meet standings. Stein, who recently returned from a 3-year retirement, is also tied with Hernandez at 21%. The meet continues into December.
  • Handle: Over $3 million.
Assiniboia Downs (Manitoba):
  • Race 7: Mongolian Wind (Wilmer Galviz/Wade Eno) won the Gold Cup Stakes and paid $9.50. The horse is 3-for-4 lifetime and was coming off a win at the track in the Manitoba Derby. Next stop could be the Preakness.

To summarize the two important summer meets, each track did $17 million in daily handle without fans on track!

The $702 million from the Spa and the $466 million at Del Mar put the tracks total to over $1.1 billion.

  • Del Mar (CA): $466.68 million was bet over 27 days. The total was an increase of $34 million from last year. The average daily handle was $17.28 million.
  • Saratoga (NY): $702,535,468 was bet over 40 days. The total was the second most in track history. The average daily handle was $17,563,387. Until next summer...

With the major tracks in New York and California dark until the weekend of September 18-19-20, this will be a quiet week comparatively speaking. However, three Breeders' Cup prep races will be run on Saturday, September 12 at Leopardstown Racecourse in Ireland and another at Kentucky Downs.

On Sunday, two Breeders' Cup preps will be run at the Curragh Racecourse in Ireland.

  • Wesley Ward won four times today including three in Kentucky.
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts won once and upped his career mark to 7,120. He is 21 away from tying Chris McCarron for sixth place in all-time wins.
Kentucky Downs (Kentucky):

  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $28,000.
  • Tyler Gaffalione added two wins to his meet lead of five.
  • Gerardo Corrales is the early surprise with three wins, all today. He is in his 6th year of jockeying and had a break-through season at Mahoning Valley in Ohio last year.
  • Adam Beschizza is winless with 15 mounts. Ricardo Santana, Jr. (14), Brian Hernandez, Jr. (13) and John Velazquez (9) are also among the winless. Velazquez has never won at this track with 11 career starts.
  • Wesley Ward leads all trainers with three victories; each came today.
  • Graham Motion (12 starters) and Steve Asmussen (10 starters) are winless.
  • Meet: September 7, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 16. The all-turf meet is among the most anticipated of the racing calendar.
  • Kentucky Downs had a major malfunction on opening day in addition to some faulty graphics in which horses scratched or whose numbers were not entered were shown among the bubbles at the screen's bottom mid-race.

Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Card: Six races held purses of $100,000 in an important day for Minnesota-bred racing.
  • Handle: $2,048,915 set a record for the card in the 27th edition of the Minnesota Festival of Champions.
  • Roimes Chirinos had three winners, two for trainer McLean Robertson.

Today was the first of the 2-day Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase held in Lexington, KY. Of the 330 horses up for purchase, 172 were sold. The high price was a Quality Road filly who cost $1,500,000. She has Irish pedigree on the mother's (Marvelous) side which indicates a future turf runner. Over $27 million was spent today.

  • Dark days: A reminder that the major tracks in southern California and New York are dark for a few days. Santa Anita opens Saturday the 19th and Belmont opens Friday the 18th. Among the tracks operating Friday:
    • Gulfstream (Florida)
    • Laurel (Maryland)
    • Belterra (Ohio)
    • Arlington (Illinois)
    • Woodbine (Ontario)
    • Golden Gate (California)
    • Penn National (Pennsylvania)
  • Wesley Ward is 7-for-14 the past three days at tracks in Kentucky, Illinois and Ohio. The man is having a splendid 2020 at 26% his best mark since 2009.
  • Steve Asmussen is 11 wins shy of becoming the second trainer in history to record 9,000 career wins.
  • Off the turf: Many tracks were off the turf including Gulfstream, Arlington, Laurel and Delaware.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Jamie Ness sent out two horses and both were victorious. Ness is fifth this year among all trainers in North America with 139 wins. He is having a resurgence this year with numbers slightly better than his career averages. He sends horses to most of the mid-Atlantic tracks.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Miguel Vasquez won his first three rides.
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts won once and upped his career mark to 7,121. He is 20 away from tying Chris McCarron for sixth place in all-time wins.
Kentucky Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 9: Moon Over Miami (Javier Castellano/Bill Mott) won the $750,000 Gun Runner for 3-year-olds.

  • Race 8: Micheline (Joel Rosario/Michael Stidham) won the $500,000 race for 3-year-old fillies at 10-to-1 with an outstanding ride. It will be tough to keep Rosario from the list of nominees for the Eclipse Award. The two Ortiz brothers are likely locks (Irad more so) but the third member of the finalists is debatable. Rosario is my pick as of today.

  • Tyler Gaffalione (6 wins) and Gerardo Corrales (4 wins) each added one win to their totals. They are 1-2 atop the riders' standings.
  • Wesley Ward added two wins to his meet lead of five.
  • Joe Sharp, who had two surgeries on his brain this summer, won twice. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier this year.
  • Adam Beschizza ended the day 1-for-20. He was winless in 15 starts as the day began.
  • Brian Hernandez, Jr. is 0-for-15.
  • John Velazquez won the Kentucky Derby three times but he is 0-for-14 lifetime at this track.
  • Glitch: There was a delay late in the day and prior to the $750,000 race related to a power outage to the truck which sent the signal across the globe.
  • Handle: The $8.9 bet today set a course record for a non-weekend card.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Race 2: A 10-to-1 shot, the only first-time starter in the race and a favorite betting angle of mine, was DQ'd from victory. The 3-to-5 shot winner, trained by Wesley Ward, was rightfully put up. The original winner veered into the path of the eventual winner which could lead to a suspension to that jockey despite having a young unraced filly which may be taken into account.
  • Dee Poulos trained two winners among the three she sent out. She has been training since 1997. She was married to Ernie Poulos who has since passed and once trained Black Tie Affair. That horse had 18 wins in 45 starts and earned well over $3 million including winning the 1991 Breeders' Cup Classic when two Kentucky Derby winners Unbridled and Strike the Gold were defeated.
Emerald Downs (Washington):
  • Race 8: Anothertwistafate (Juan Gutierrez/Blaine Wright), who was off since May 2019 and entered off a 10th place finish at Pimlico, won the Grade 3, $100,000 Longacres Mile Handicap. The 4-year-old Kentucky bred was among the youngest horses in the race and was sent off the favorite.

Yesterday, at the Fasig-Tipton yearling sale in Kentucky, a Quality Road filly was purchased for $1.5 million.

Today's conclusion to the 2-day sale saw an American Pharoah son sold for $1.25 million. And indications are that Bob Baffert will be the eventual trainer.

Of the five highest sold colts, two were Into Mischief who sired this year's Kentucky Derby winner.

A total of 19 colts and fillies sold for $500,000 or more in the two days with Into Mischief leading the way with four babies sold.

In summary, over $61,000,000 was spent on 348 horses sold the past two days.

========================

And the Keeneland sale is this week:

Arizona: Things appear gloomy in Arizona with both Arizona Downs and Turf Paradise and the interests that surround OTB and other pertinent matters. There seems to be much friction between a variety of sources. The industry needs to figure out these problems. The sport is booming at some levels but to lose tracks like Suffolk Downs (Mass.), Portland Meadows (Oregon). potentially Arlington (Illinois), and others in recent years sends a bad vibe and is an embarrassment to those states and individuals responsible for the demise.

Newbie: For those playing the races and maybe unfamiliar with Natalie Lynch, she is a former assistant to Jeffrey Englehart who got her trainer's license less than a month ago. She will be sending out Wendell Fong in the $100,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Monmouth (NJ) on Saturday. She will be based at Belmont (NY) with what appears to be a stable of ten. She was attending nursing school in Maryland not too long ago.

  • Dark: Major tracks in New York, New Jersey, Kentucky and California were dark.
  • Churchill Downs will run September 17 - 27 following the end of Kentucky Downs' meet.
  • Steve Asmussen remains 11 wins shy of 9,000. He has the second most wins of any trainer in North America. He sends out as many as 17 horses combined at Woodbine, Remington, Louisiana and Kentucky
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Handle: More than $3.2 million bet.
  • Maryland horsemen + Stronach: That starting gate logo is lifeless. How about adding some flavor to the drab logo and design? The orange-yellow and black combo seemed to work just fine with the prior simulcast graphic before the box lettering encompassed the various Stronach tracks.
  • Race 5: The original order of 9-5-3-1-7 was changed to 5-1-9-3-7 after a lengthy review. The stewards and placing judging took their time with multiple violations and did a good job. The explanation through the simulcast was detailed.

  • Race 7: Into Mischief finished 1-2 in a race of 2-year-old fillies in which the $2 exacta was $81. Into Mischief is firing on all cylinders as a stallion. He sired Authentic among others.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Rainbow Six: Guaranteed $400,000 'pot tomorrow.
  • Card: While it is an obvious statement to say this isn't the best time of year for Florida racing -- summers are not -- the card on Saturday offers some decent handicapping and may be worth a look with New York dormant.
  • No turf no peace: No turf racing again which made those who prefer grass antsy again.
  • Miguel Vasquez rode three winners. It is his fifth straight racing day with multiple winners.
  • Race 2: Richard Silvestri was listed as the winning trainer. It is his second lifetime win and first since 2011.
  • Race 8: Trev, who entered with a 5-race win streak, finished 6th in his worst performance since January 2016. The 10-year-old gelding was out for the 42nd time and had hit the board nine straight times.
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts won once and is now 19 wins behind Chris McCarron and 6th place all-time.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Larry Rivelli is striking at 34% this meet. His 34 victories is 25 more than his closest challenger.
Prairie Meadows (Iowa):
  • Race 10: The finale at Prairie Meadows tonight is a perfect example of how PP on surfaces is important. Perfect Beauty had 4 wins in 19 starts but is now 3-for-4 on wet tracks and it was muddy in Iowa tonight. Some horses like off tracks. Someone nailed the $.50 Pick 5 for $14,000+. Some bettors profit of such nights.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Canceled: Due to issues related to fires in the area, racing was canceled.
Woodbine (Canada):
  • Handle: Over $6,000,000 bet. A good show!
  • Justin Stein won the finale and now holds a 75-to-74 lead over Rafael Hernandez. Stein returned to racing last year after a 3-year retirement.
  • Luis Contreras rode three winners.
