ARKANSAS:
The major newspaper in Arkansas -- The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette which according to research is the oldest continually run newspaper west of the Mississippi River -- has named Lou Cella its Sportsman of the Year. While the competition may have been lessened in other sports, to get recognized for what we all witnessed in the first half of 2020 is monumental for horse racing.

Cella was praised by many insiders for how Oaklawn handled the C-virus and was perhaps the most instrumental of all tracks in keeping the sport of racing active during the early stages.

Oaklawn, even prior to this, has been making a tremendous name for itself as a wonderful venue and certainly is a magnet for jockeys/trainers/owners due to the increase in purse money but also handicappers.

Always one of my favorite tracks that can frustrate even the most astute handicapper with its bombers completing tickets seemingly more so than at other tracks (and certainly in the first few weeks as seems the norm), Oaklawn is the embodiment on how to show a product. The 2021 edition opens in late January.

An extensive article on the newspaper's web site is worthy of a read:

Keeping racing running

Oaklawn stayed open when almost all of sports closed down.

For his leadership during a pandemic and efforts to keep horse racing running -- and many jobs in the state still paying -- Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort owner and President Louis Cella is the 2020 Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Sportsman of the Year.

A few thousand fans attended racing at Oaklawn on March 12. Later that evening, as reports of Americans struck by covid-19 began to dominate national news coverage, Cella and other Oaklawn administrators met to decide how the track would proceed.

Amateur and professional sports across the country and around the world chose to suspend competition. Less than a 10-minute drive from Oaklawn's racetrack, the Arkansas Activities Association decided to shut down high school sports after the England boys defeated Earle for the Class 2A basketball state championship March 12. Four classes had to declare co-champions for both boys and girls.

Nearly every nonessential business and organized activity were shut down.

Oaklawn chose to continue its live racing season with attendance limited to horsemen, officials, essential track personnel and media representatives. When racing resumed on Friday, March 13, fans were excluded for the first time since the track opened in 1904.

-----------------------
"Though we're glad it's behind us, we are elated this day shined," Cella said. "You saw the national telecasts, on four networks, saying, how in the world did Arkansas, not Oaklawn, how did Arkansas pull this off. Our horsemen, our management, we all worked together because if we don't, we weren't going to have a season. It's as simple as that. In that regard, we're quite proud to have been able to pull this off."

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Handle: $3.2 million.
  • Race 6: Heroic Officer (Gerardo Milan/Blane Servis) won by 14 1/2 lengths.
  • Ruben Silvera rode three winners, two for trainer Louis Linder.
  • Jomar Torres rode winners in the final two races, the last race for Claudio Gonzalez who won the 2020 Laurel Fall/winter trainers' title.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Conditions: Sloppy conditions.
  • Closing day: December 30. The next meet runs January 2, 2021 through April 17.
  • Belterra: The track in Cincinnati is scheduled to run April 29 - October 7.
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Canceled: Today was the scheduled finale of the 2020 meet. Track conditions related to weather caused the cancellation.

  • Leading jockey: Luis Colon had 120 wins which was 23 more victories than his closest challenger. Last year, Colon had just three starts at the track as his tack was mainly in Ohio.
  • Leading trainer: Jay Bernardini, who excelled for many years at Suffolk Downs (Massachusetts), was the upset winner of the 2020 meet. A good, solid trainer one that usually shows his labor on his sleeve. Eddie Clouston, a local, was runner up despite sending out 48 more starters than the winner. Last year, Clouston put up exceptional numbers and won the meet by 43 victories with Bernardini coming in the second spot. Bernardini had a 4-win day on December 23 (two wins in Ohio and two at Mountaineer).
  • Handle: The final numbers have yet to be published.
  • Opening day: Racing resumes April 25, 2021.
  • West Virginia's other track: Charles Town's meet ended earlier this month. The track released figures based on average bet a race and the $231,518 figure established an all-time high.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Adam Beschizza, from England, and Mitchell Murrill, from Alabama, both won three times. They each have 21 wins which is tied for second best at the meet.

PEGASUS WORLD CUP UPDATE:
Javier Castellano's
hip surgery will sideline him through the $3 million Pegasus World Cup. He had hoped to return prior.

Shug McGaughley
has opted for Tyler Gaffalione to replace Castellano aboard Code of Honor (15 6-4-2, $2.6 million earned ).

Castellano was scheduled to substitute for John Velazquez who is replacing Manny Franco aboard Tiz the Law (9 6-1-1, $2.7 million earned).

Penn National (Pennsylvania):
  • Edwin Gonzalez rode six winners tonight including a stirring five consecutive races. I don't recall any rider in the US this year winning five straight races. In addition to winning the first race, he began his streak with the fifth race and continued winning through race 9. He finished 9 6-2-1. Gonzalez has 172 wins at the meet which is 87 more than his closest challenger. He won six at Tampa Bay a couple or so years ago as I recall.

Wednesday, December 30, 2020

Parx (Pennsylvania):
Keith Jones estimates he has called around 70,000 races. His first was June 24, 1985, at Garden State Park. His last (as a full-time announcer) will be Wednesday at Parx Racing. There will be 10 races to call on the last day of racing at Parx in 2020, the last race of the day scheduled for 4:28 p.m., darkness beginning to shroud the track as the field of eight with their 391 lifetime starts is on the far turn, heading for the stretch, Jones’ 34-year career as the track’s announcer 30 seconds from its conclusion.
  • Race 10: Unbridledadventure (Jeremy Laprida/Eli Betancourt) won the finale by nearly 10 lengths in what is the final race called of the career of Keith Jones.

Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $4 million.
  • Gerald Bennett added two wins to his meet lead. The trainer is 57 15-6-4.
  • Jose Delgado hot a hot barn. The trainer won twice today and is 46 13-8-7 (28%/61%).
  • Dennis Ward also added two wins. The trainer has been active since the early 1980s.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $8.1 million.
  • Jose Ortiz rode for the first time since December 13 and won three of his four mounts. Not a bad return.
  • Edgard Zayas and Tyler Gaffalione each rode two winners.
  • Luis Saez added a win to his meet lead which now stands at 31.

NYRA has stated that in January, the Pick 6 -- known as the Empire Six -- will be distributed as a mandatory payout daily. There is possibly precedence for that but it is perhaps unique. New York has been dark since the Sunday prior to Christmas but I think the carryover starts at $183,000+.

thanks for giving us all a forum to talk Thoroughbred/Standardbred Horse Racing in 2020;

btw, thanks for the memories Tiz the Law, as he has been medically retired

You are welcome. Equine athletes are stunning creatures. This thread is a labor of love.

His breeding rights have already been sold. That was likely a factor in addition to the immediate concern for his safety. Good job by the rider to sense something instantly during a workout.

Aqueduct.

Lolita Shivmangal! Well talk about something not expected. Cup Vin Scully, I don't believe what I just saw. Her father Doodnauth Shivmangal is also a trainer.

She entered today 0-for-37 in 2020. She is 2-for-2 today and doubled her career win total. She was 2-for-77 lifetime entering today.

Luis Cardenas, who I mentioned in a recent recap as a bug with promise, rode a 40-to-1 shot to victory.

And how about the glee at Laurel? John Hiraldo, a 10-pound bug, won for the first time. Fists are pumping as he crossed the finish line.

30-to-1. Paid $69.80. Officially, 33-to-1.

The $1 super paid over $12,000.

That one I did not have. Grrr..

Unless he has someone working his Twitter, the bug who just broke his maiden re-Tweeted almost immediately following his first win.

From John Hiraldo's account:

Interesting....I have read of different rules via jurisidictions but since this is a married couple as of earlier this month...

... brothers like the Ortizes can ride in the same race. The Davis family has three (brothers/sisters) who ride and two who train. No conflict there. But husband and wife jockeys have to ride an an entry.

Woo. JUNIOR ALVARADO four straight wins.

That is what I call a hot New York Girl! She was the favorite but Junior rode patiently. She is likely looking at a stakes race next.

Edit:
It was evident that a stakes race could be next as one of the track handicappers also saw.

"Welcome to Florida...welcome to the U.S.," Pete Aiello. :DD

He is past heating up, he is on fire.

Four down in the Rainbow Six.

===============

And Junior's run ended. Mexican Wonder Boy, with Tyler Gaffalione on top, won.

Free live streams to select tracks:
Thursday, December 31, 2020
  • Wesley Ward had a horse entered at both Aqueduct and Gulfstream and both won. Both are two-year-olds. The man is a sensation with 2-year-olds. He is better than 27% winning and nearly 60% in 2020 hitting the board with babies. Phenomenal.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Re-opening day: Today was the first live racing day since the track closed for an extended Christmas break on December 20.
  • Handle: Just under $9 million.
  • Races 1 and 4: Lolita Shivmangal! Talk about something not expected. The trainer entered 0-for-37 in 2020 but won with both her starters today. She began the day 2-for-77 lifetime then doubled her win total. Her father Doodnauth Shivmangal was a trainer though 2018. Luis Cardenas, who I mentioned in a recent recap as a bug with promise, rode a 40-to-1 shot to victory in the second of two wins by the trainer.
  • Race 2: Wasp (Kendrick Carmouche/Todd Pletcher) won for the second time in four starts. The 3-year-old daughter to American Pharoah -- like all race horses she will age a year tomorrow -- is 4 2-2-0. She was purchased for $385,000 in November in a Kentucky mixed sale. Previously, she was sold for $450,000 at Saratoga in 2018.
  • Race 6: Trevor McCarthy returned from his honeymoon and won with his second mount of the day. He rode for the first time since December 12. Earlier this month, he married fellow jockey Katie Davis. The winner paid $23.00.
  • Race 8: Mammoth totals as the $.50 Pick 5 was nailed for over $75,000 and the $.20 Pick 6 was worth $106,675.70 to whomever was fortunate to play the right combination. Over $1.6 million was added to the Pick 6 pool today.
  • Kendrick Carmouche rode two winners and leads the meet by four wins with 16 victories.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Finale: Today ended the current meet. Tomorrow begins the next meet.
  • Leading jockey: Sheldon Russell won the riders' title with 44 victories. He has won eight meet titles in Maryland including six at Laurel but this was his first since 2015. Trevor McCarthy won 99 times in the state of Maryland in 2020, most for any rider.
  • Husband-wife team: Sheldon Russell-Brittany Russell won with 18 of 35 starters at the meet (51 percent) and finished in the money 30 times (86 percent). It was one of the highlights of any circuit for 2020.
  • Leading trainer: Claudio Gonzalez with 28 wins, won his 15th Maryland title. His two wins today gave him 101 in the state of Maryland in 2020.
TrainerStarts1st2nd3rdWin %ITM %Money
Claudio Gonzalez12828231422%65%$1,011,343
Brittany Russell49249749%82%$789,238
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
  • Race 2: Sheldon Russell rode the winner. He is in a battle with Jevian Toledo for leading jockey at the meet (+3 as the day began). Both are represented by agent Marty Leonard. An agent is limited to two clients maximum. Russell rode for the first time since December 19.
  • Race 3: Sheldon Russell went back-to-back. That secures the riding title at the meet. Bug rider John Hiraldo finished third, the first time he hit the board with his 17th lifetime start.
  • Race 6: Flat Rate (John Hiraldo/Michael Jones, Jr.) gave the 10-pound apprentice jockey his first lifetime win. Good show and an excited rider pumped his fist the second he crossed the finish line. He began his career 17 0-0-1 before the victory. He is related to fellow Maryland jockey Angel Cruz. The win paid $69.80. The $1 super paid over $12,000. The trainer is based at Charles Town.

  • Alexander Crispin could be a nominee for Apprentice of the Year (three will be named in January). He won twice on the card.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $9,992,516.
  • Bill Mott entered three horses and each won. All three were ridden by Junior Alvarado.
  • Junior Alvarado rode four straight winners. He entered today with just three victories at the meet. He is now tied for ninth place among jockeys in wins at the meet.
  • Race 3: Smoke Alarm (Edgar Prado/Paul Kopaj), in the far outside post (#11), was sent off at 5-to-1 after a 12-to-1 morning line and romped to a victory. Prado won for the 7,093rd time which is eighth most all-time. Kopaj, who has been training for about 30 years in small doses, is having a superb 2020. He is 26 10-4-2 (38%/62%) including 3 2-1-0 in December 2020.
  • Race 5: Miss Tapirado (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) finished magnificently in a stretch battle. The $1.3 million purchase by a member of the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia, was out for the second time and first on turf. She was an 8-to-1 morning line who was bet early before settling in at 5-to-1.

  • Race 6: Junior Alvarado-Bill Mott went back-to-back.
  • Race 7: Junior Alvarado completed the natural hat trick.
  • Race 8: Junior Alvarado-Bill Mott completed a riding triple as a unit. Alvarado won a fourth straight race. What a mighty feat at the Championship Meet.
  • Race 9: Mexican Wonder Boy (Tyler Gaffalione/Danny Gargan) got to the lead and never looked back. The trainer, as mentioned a few times, is electric at this meet. He is 16 8-1-2 (50%/69%).
  • Rainbow Six carryover: $503,000+ will be carried over into Friday's pool; however, the track has guaranteed $900,000 will be up for grabs.
  • Replay show:

Turfway Park (Kentucky):

  • Race 1: This is a dream! The even money favorite won the race followed by the two longest shots on the board -- at 53-to-1 and 106-to-1 -- to complete the tri which paid $804.60 for $.50.

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):

  • Race 2: Jimmy Two Times (Colby Hernandez/Keith Bourgeois) won the $110,000 Louisiana Futurity. The 2-year-old gelding won his biggest race to date and is now 5 3-0-0.
  • Race 9: Kittansett (Florent Geroux, Brad Cox), a son to American Pharoah and a $1.4 million purchase by Boston-based businessman Larry Best, was out for the second time and broke his maiden. His other race was 16 months ago at Saratoga.
  • Race 10: Big time (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Dallas Stewart) won the $110,000 Louisiana Futurity for fillies.
  • Chalk dusted: Only the last two races of 10 did favorites win.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Over $8 million bet.
  • Race 9: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $323,000. The winning ticket was sold at a Maryland betting facility. The prior carryover was $167,262, there was $204,142 in new money wagered today which created a pool of $371,404.
  • Race 8: Kent Desormeaux won for the first time since July 26. This was his third mount since returning to riding earlier this month after a lengthy suspension that lasted approximately five months and one that included a stint at rehab. The jockey has over 6,000 career wins and is in 18th place all-time in North America.
  • Race 7: Quattroelle (Tyler Baze/Mike Puype) won the $75,000 Blue Norther Stakes.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $38,000.

There is more to consider than Grade I results but my picks for the top three trainers finished in the top three in that category although I have it as Cox-Baffert-Brown.

Jockeys, however, is another topic. Irad Ortiz, Joel Rosario. Tyler Gaffalione and Luis Saez remain my top four in that order and to remove one is tough. I want to give Gaffalione the nod as a nominee but that figure for Saez is difficult to ignore.

As we wrap up this thread for the calendar year, a look back at what will be 30 years ago for the 1991 Kentucky Derby when Strike the Gold won with Chris Antley riding for Nick Zito. The jockey's appreciation for his equine partner was intense. The enthusiastic reaction by Zito was contagious nearly immediately after the race concluded. One of my favorite Derby memories. Re-live it here:
