Well there's already an american thread for next year and as always after a loss like that I need to put my mind on something else. Lafrenière-Veleno-x

Smith-Dobson
MacIsaac-x

I don’t expect to get Hayton back but he’ll be much appreciated if he doesn’t stick with the Yotes.

Pretty good roster looking at it from today. Considering how many young players are making the NHL nowadays, I have my doubts on Hayton, Cozens, Dach, Veleno, and Dobson. We'll have to rely on our 2001s this tournament on forward IMO. It's also on big ice. I think Pelletier, Fortier and Legare make the team.

Lafreniere - Thomas - Lavoie
Krebs - Pelletier - Noel
Foudy - Dellandrea - Legare
Holloway - Groulx - Damiani
Fortier

Smith - Bernard-Docker
Byram - Woo
McIsaac - Addison
Robertson/Chisholm/Bahl

Rodrigue
Gravel
Miner

Really strong defence, even if we miss Smith and Dobson, I like the guys who can take their spots in Robertson and Chisholm (mobile, lengthy D). Bahl is a good PKer, he should be used as a specialist. We might miss our top '00 forwards in Veleno and Hayton who led the Hlinka team in points, '01s will have to step up especially if Dach/Cozens are in the NHL as well. Speed is crucial, but that doesn't mean disregard size.

Kisio would be the early front runner.
He shouldn't be. Only coach to not win gold with Canada at the Hlinka in the last 12 years.

I think we should go with guys who have experience winning in the CHL. That's where NHL organizations get their coaches, they already Knoblauch, Gruden, Thompson, Viveiros, Konowalchuk who took their teams to the Memorial Cup the last 2 years.

Mario Pouliot - just won the Memorial Cup. Best team in the QMJHL.
Andre Tourigny - just won with the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and was an assistant with Canada at the WJC in 2010, 2011, and 2013. 2nd best team in the OHL right now after London.
Dale Hunter - He's a winner, won at the Hlinka a few years back. Best team in the OHL.
Marc Habscheid - Memorial Cup, WC gold and silver medal, U20 2 silver medals, and his team has the best record in the WHL.

Will be interesting to see what happens with a few guys. I would say the top 2 centers would be Hayton and Veleno and I think at least one will be there for the tourney. I would guess Veleno plays with the Griffins and is loaned if he wants to go. Hayton I think will be with the Yotes. ANother interesting one will be which high picks will be in the NHL. I'm not sure Cozens or Dach are the level of guy that forces an NHL team to make room for them right away. One of them would be my early favourites for the second line center spot, Dellandrea would be another one that gets a long look

I could see

Lafreniere- Veleno - and a guy like Foudy to be on the forecheck working well as the top line

The defense will likely be

Smith-Dobson
McIsaac-Bernard-Docker

Really early to tell for those other spots. Woo and McIsaac would play a similar role I think, but Woo is a good option and I think an early favourite for one of the spots. Byram the other favourite right now. Bahl is on the outside looking in because his role would be similar to McIsaac and Woo but they can do more in other areas if needed.

Coach should put Lafrenière and Laferriere on the same line, just to troll the play by play guys. :sarcasm:

Ty Smith was the last cut on the Devils roster this year, he is having one of the better seasons for a defensmen in the last 20 years in the WHL, without improving anything other than gaining 5 pounds Smith likely makes the Devils next year. If he can improve his his shot and skating a tick he will be playing top 4 for NJ, especially given how weak NJ is on the left side.

I'll give it a shot.

A Lafreniere J Veleno (AHL) R Lavoir

T Smith N Dobson

J McIssac J Bernard-Docker

O Rodrigue

best '01 born goalie projected #1 for the 2021 at home in Edmonton/Red Deer

If Hayton sticks in Arizona, then move Krebs up to for the DUB line. All '01s, but big enough, fast enough and skilled enough to handle big minutes. Move Suzuki up to form the O line.

Hockey Canada should drop the November CHL-Russia series. It's really not helping either side. Come up with something new.

I think I'm over the undrafted late bloomer phase/SteenbergenLeason. I want only players who have come up through the POE and have years of proven elite level tournament experience.

And for god's sakes, a coach who is there to win a gold medal and not angling for a NHL gig.

and pick the game time schedule best for the team to achieve success not primetime ratings in the eastern time zone. I'm talking of course about the 2021 tournament. :) and all home tournaments henceforth.

Veleno can't play AHL next year can he? I'm aware of the extra year due to exceptional status but I thought it was still the 20 year old rule.

until the age of 20 OR 4 years. standard CHL players agreement. therefore he's eligible for the AHL next year should he not crack the DRW roster.

I'm not convinced. Half of this team got bounced at the U18 in the quarter-finals by the Czech Rep last spring. I felt they underperformed, but the additions of Cozens and Dach + a few others doesn't do much for my confidence for a gold medal run just yet... there's work to be done, right now just 1 of 5 teams competing for a medal.

I think Veleno will get a long look in camp but he likely doesnt make the full time NHL roster yet. He should be available, unless the Griffins have him playing a huge role next year

Canada has had great goaltending the past couple of years after long stretches of sub par and downright terrible goaltending. How do the 2020 candidates look?

That was my post-tournament impression of this team as well.

Canada has been undone in the past due to bad goaltending, then all of a sudden we get a good set of goalies and our roster is weak.

It reminds me of the Blue Jays with their pitching with no hitting and hitting with no pitching.
