I really wanted the Caps to draft him. ( and I'd also like to know more about him) He is an overager but he was the best scorer of his KHL team! That's very impressive.

I saw a couple of games but didn't really focus a lot on him. Huge, plays hard and has some skill. Will be interesting to see when they want to bring him over. He has one more year on his KHL deal.

1993 born big (6'5", 216lbs) center, uses his body well, skating is very good for his size, also his size lets him feel comfortable in front of the net. Was able to produce at the MHL level before and this season he finally debuted at KHL level and went almost 0.5PPG. IIRC he was fighting some injury troubles before that's why he wasn't drafted yearlier and also because he didn't participate at U18 or U20 championships.

I have more hope in Kadeykin than anyone we picked in rounds 3-6. Another late round Russian, so there's always the possibility that he becomes a steal.

Malkinfan on HF Boards has seen him and confirms he's got some skill. Moving up to the KHL and leading his team in scoring is a good sign. I have no idea if he has any interest in ever coming over, but with Marchenko and Kadeykin it's nice to see us dip our toes back into Russia. Could be our new Sweden where teams curse our ability to pull NHL talent from a talent pool that is being underscouted by the league.

Russian factor + overager + had some injury troubles last season + Detroit's Russian scouting is definitely better than average NHL club Russian scouting.

To add on I dont think he really played in any big tournaments that usually showcase many prospects to scouts. Also, we dont draft Russians ever, I think the ability of our Russian scouting today is completely unknown.

Marchenko was drafted at 7-th round as an overager after a serious injury, haven't played at U18/U20 championships and spent most part of that season at MHL, so I think that the scouting quality is at least good.

The #RedWings have never taken a Russian they didn't feel confident wanted to play in North America. This could be interesting.

Marchenko was not really an unknown though, before all the injuries he was one of the most popular young defenseman in his age group, when all the injuries and health issues struck NHL teams pretty much forgot about him and the only reason the wings picked him is because their head Russian scout talked to Marchenko sometime before the draft and he expressed his desire to come over seas and play for Detroit.

That right there makes me feel better about this guy.

Sweden is viewed through a microscope by scouts these days so being able to pull in late round steals via Sweden is going to be extremely difficult. Russia and the developing eastern bloc countries is where a lot of steals are going to be appearing from in the future. IE Tatar, Jurco, Mrazek

I don't think they didn't scout him that season and picked him just after one talk, iirc the story was that Marchenko was still on the radar the season after his injury and this talk you have mentioned just finalized the whole process. And that's what I actually mean - keeping player on the radar even though he wasn't considered a top prospect anymore, talking to him in person and, if everything is ok, drafting him - those are actually the signs of a good healthy scouting. And I think Kadeykin could be a similar case like Marchenko - not an unknown guy, but definitely not a top prospect, also after injury.

By the way googled a little bit and old Russian news articles are telling that Kadeykin had a career threatening knee injury at the start of 2012-2013 season.

Boom or bust pick. If he comes to North America, he's got a good shot, and if he makes it, he could be a lot better than his draft position. But that's a lot of ifs.

I like it. Classic Detroit Red Wings seventh-round dice roll.

I like it because there are many young guys in the KHL who are good enough to go to the NHL (ie. Panarin, Malykhin etc.) but NHL teams stay away because there is next to 0 chance that they will sign if drafted since they are made millionaire's in the KHL. Malykhin even stated he wanted to come to the NHL this summer, and if he willed it he could have, but Kazan waved serious $ in front of him and he took it.

The reason why I explain this is because when the Red Wings pick in Russia, I believe they have made an arrangement with the player and his agent before selecting him. I know the wings hired a guy to scout in Russia, formerly worked for Montreal. I know this guy has done his homework and made a case for Kadeykin, see article below on wings late round draft selection process.

I really hope this kid wants to come over. I doubt he'll take part in any of the camps while he's still in the KHL but after a year or two he should be pretty much ready to make the lineup.

His actual draft year was 2012 but how many guys picked in that draft would have lead their KHL team in scoring last season? His production is really impressive along with the size.

I'd say right now he's the guy I'm most intrigued by from this draft. He may never play a single game in Detroit but I'm looking forward to following his development.

His teammate #44 is bigger than he is
