So if Krebs is really good down low with possession stats...

wait for it...

Does that mean his line is the Krebs Cycle?

... I'll show myself out.

For where we may be picking, I'm firmly on the Byram hype train

100% agree. If we're not getting Hughes/Kakko Byram is probably BPA or it's enough of a coinflip to grab him regardless. We're firmly in the bottom 6 in the league so unless multiple teams win the lotto to pass us I think there's a good chance he falls to us anyway as most of the teams around us seem to need a C more than D. Unless Det/Phi/Chi/Ott are really high on Byram I'd assume they go with one of the forwards over him. LA is more of a wild card since they need help everywhere.

Do you think the Devils have a shot at the #4 or #5 pick?

I know they have zero shot at #1 and #2.

I mean, I wouldn't count on it... but they've been flirting with a grip on at least the 6 spot in the draft order. That could place them anywhere from 23-26% odds of a top 3 pick result from the lottery.

I'm interested to see how Peyton Krebs plays in this game. If his team wasn't a dumpster fire he would be getting more hype i think. Very good skater and highly skilled so I would love to see him shine in a game like this.

Right. I was talking about the increasing likelihood that we end up in the 5/6 spot. I don't think we'll be bad enough to crack the top 4. I suppose if the team puts a run together we could "fall" to 9 or 10, but I'm growing less confident of a run with each passing game. Maybe when Hall returns, but we'll also be dropping a few TDL rentals around that time.

Mississauga Steelheads takes the cake for me as a club name.

Second pick is Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

Makes me want to do a road trip through rural Quebec and Ontario to watch minor league hockey. Except it’s winter and the trucks on the trans Canada highway would be very hairy to deal with. And the accommodations in backwoods Quebec? The Swiss Inn in Bruce Mines, Ontario has left indelible memories a couple of decades ago.

How goodly are thou outlying districts oh Canada.

Off topic, all of this, to be sure.

Jesus Christ, I've never seen a more ridiculous collection of born to be a hockey player names in my life.

Did all of their parents buy the same book or something?

It's a good thing Mads Sogaard will have the help of Bowen Byram in front of him so hopefully it frees up Oleg Zaytsev and Peyton Krebs.

What's a Sagueneen?
Literally in Québécois French, someone from Saguenay or the Saguenay River region of Quebec. The Saguenay flows into the St. Lawrence from the north (rising in Lake St. Jean) about where the river narrows from a huge estuary into a narrower but still wide body of water downstream from Quebec. And Chiciutimi is a town along the river. Think about 3 or 4 hours from Quebec City. Evidently a place like this rates a CHL club but then so do or did the rust belt towns of upstate NY.

Binghamton is, however, a considerably more worldly and linked in place than Chicoutimi. A one horse town to be sure.

Saguenay is a pretty remote area of the Province but still, it has to be said, far more a part of the contemporary economy and current times than the region on the south bank of the St. Lawrence (bordering Aroostock County, Maine) where, if you wanted today to know what an 19th century peasant in lower Normandy was like, you could get a decent pretty idea. The towns along the Chaudiere River have a definite frontier flavor. Rough places. But northern Ontario is that way too. This is an essential part of hockey culture. It’s also why those NHL fights are genuine expressions of where a lot of these guys come from.

But back to the Saguenay River. Cartier mentions it in the earliest exploration accounts. And because he was sailing up the St. Lawrence and charting it from the sea, that makes sense. Because the confluence of the two streams was an important junction in Native North American geography and it was a natural highway and trade route north. Lots of traffic came down that virtual thoroughfare. In furs one way and blankets and metal axes and such truck items the other, once trade was established in the 17th century (after Champlain).

Anyway the name of the club is kind of Romantic. There’s a certain sense they are rightly proud of it.

Forgive the digression. No hockey this week.

They don’t really need much of a run to end up 7th or 8th. Lots of bad teams this year.

Given there's a draft lottery based on odds, where you "end up" in the rankings is only mathematically likely where you will pick, starting with pick #10.

Prior to pick #10, you are not statistically likely to pick in the spot that the standings land you in.

Yeah, after posting I considered there's still way too much hockey to start looking at final spots. I think I was just lamenting the fact that it's seemed like one step forward, two steps back all season...
