After watching this, I do see why we're very high on him. None of our prospects on D are really #1 D potential. Samorukov seems like a great #2 if he keeps going good in his development route and same with Bouchard. Broberg does have a lot of talent

Samorukov is every bit a #1 dman in the making. Which is why I wouldn’t trade him.

Samorukov absolutely has #1 potential. When he was finally used in an offense role his offense exploded and his defense was still legit.

When used with a offense only defender his offense dips as he is constantly doing what he can to cover. Put him with a solid 2 way defender like him and you'll have a great pairing

I tend to keep my expectations down with every prospect lol

My guess as of today (I'm sure it will change by June 21):

1. New Jersey Devils - Jack Hughes (no-brainer)

2. New York Rangers - Kappo Kakko (no-brainer)

3. Chicago Blackhawks - Alex Turcotte (skilled, speedy, two-way centre from Chicago, and the Blackhawks have spent 3 first-round picks in the last two years on D-men)

4. Colorado Avalanche - Bowen Byram (best D-man in the draft - Avalanche defence will be in great shape with a Byram-Makar top pairing for a decade)

5. Los Angeles Kings - Kirby Dach (big, skilled centre to become the heir apparent to Kopitar)

6. Detroit Red Wings - Dylan Cozens (Red Wings need a 2C or a top-pairing D. I think Broberg is a stretch at #6, so they will go with one of Cozens and Zegras. I think they pick Cozens for speed and goal-scoring)

7. Buffalo Sabres - Cole Caufield (best goal-scorer in the draft. Caufield on the wing with one of Eichel or Mittelstadt for a decade will be too appealing for the Sabres to pass up)

8. Edmonton Oilers - Trevor Zegras (shifty, skilled offensive centre, who can also play wing and will fit in nicely in the Oilers top-6)

Someone made the Chychrun comparison the other day, I can definitely see it, looks more like Chychrun than Nurse anyway. Also seems like he has better vision and less hesitation with the puck than Nurse which is my only knock on Nurse. What a fantastic skater.

Obviously we need wingers but I’m warming up to Broberg. I’m not a huge fan of the current D core we have. I like Nurse and Klefbom but the rest are pretty underwhelming. The prospects look great but they’re all a gamble until they establish themselves. Also wingers really are easier to acquire than top 4 dmen.

I'm warming up to Broberg. I just wish we'd trade down for him and he needs to develop his first pass. That is the #1 requirement for a Dman in the NHL next to skating
I think the worry about trading down is the Ducks at #9. Their defense has taken a hit after trading away Vatanen and Montour, and they don’t really have much in the pipeline for dmen outside of Mahura. They could be hot after Broberg as well.

If it's between him and Caufield, I take Caufield all day, I want some goal scoring out of the forward they draft if they can.

Boldy is a good goalscorer too and brings so much more outside of that compared to Caufield.

If they hit their potential(which I think Boldy is more likely to), you're probably looking at a 40 goal Caufield and a 30 goal Boldy. If that ends up the case, are those 10 goals really worth having a guy who is 7" shorter and worse in basically every other facet outside goal-scoring?

The supposed interest in Broberg (apparently they are really high on Cozens as well) tells me one thing. That they are going to try to overcompensate with this speed thing, focusing too much on speed without looking at all aspects of the game.

All they've been talking about in the offseason is speed speed and more speed because it's becoming a faster league and while the Oilers do need a speed upgrade, there's so much more that goes into evaluating players. I'd rather have a high skilled player with some skating concerns than a speed demon who has mediocre skill.

From the little I've watching of Broberg, I'm just not seeing a high upside player. He can move well and transport the puck well but there's nothing else about his game that really stands out. The size and speed combo is enticing but skill can't be taught and I'm just not seeing a high skill level with this player (again, small sample size).

They have such a huge need for skilled forwards in the system and with this being such a forward heavy draft at the top, I'd be really disappointed if they passed on one.
Boldy, Krebs and Newhook are three players that I'd be more than happy with at 8. Even Caufield over a Dman.
If they really feel that Broberg is BPA so be it, but I feel like it comes with too much risk.
I don't hate the idea of adding another good D prospect but trade down to get him then.

Good post.

Samorukov is arguably our best prospect. He’s neck and neck with Bouchard and probably has better potential to be a number 1 than Bouchard does who I see more as a #2 who eats teams alive on the PP.
