Threw it right to him. Not being used to the uniforms I had to double take as I assumed it was just a receiver

Considering it's week 1 of a brand new league, the level of play was good. If they can keep the teams mostly together, by the 3rd season the play will be a lot better.

I like having the refs and replay official mic'd. Not a fan of mics in the huddle or on the coaches. Hate mid-game sideline interviews.

The games will improve as the teams get more experience together and the coaches figure out what they have. It takes a tremendous amount of experience as a unit to have good o-line play. A lot of these guys were starters for good power 5 schools. They didn't just forget how to play. It will take some time.

I'm gonna give it a look. Unlike the XFL, the AAF is actually attempting to be a legitimate alternative league/development pipeline and not make a sideshow of itself.

It has some legit names/minds behind it too.
To be fair since the XFL comes out in 2020 you don't know what they'll put into their league

I think the biggest thing is that, while they are their own entity, they have the support of the NFL.
This is the biggest thing. The whole league is filled with ex-NFL coaches and front office people (Polian for one)

My hope is it can be used as some sort of a minor league system except there are no tie-ins to any major league club. Not everyone can play in the NFL. This league should help address that.

20k in Orlando
28k in San Antonio

Maybe 15k actually showed up for the Orlando game due to the rain. Will be interesting to see how things look there in better weather.

I actually thought it was OK.

Certainly, there were some plays that made you cringe - which is probably why there weren't more points scored - but there were more plays than I expected that approached NFL caliber. And a couple of players flashed some real ability.

Will Americans watch a developmental minor league in high enough numbers to afford the salaries with no commercials? Reading through so much of the broadcast talk sounded like open pleasing to become NFL2.

I think the players get $250k over 3 years not guaranteed. So, average of $83k per player. 53 man roster? Around $4.3 million in salary. Add cost for travel, uniforms, coaching, training staff, and team facilities.

I’d imagine at least $10-$12 million in costs for each team. If they get 25k per game, that’s 125k for each team for the year in attendance. At $20 per ticket that is $2.5 million. At $40 per ticket that’s $5 million.
No idea what the TV money would be

I'm weary of drawing comparisons to the XFL. I remember reading a poll that said the #1 reason fans stopped watching was all the gimmicks. The AAF is shooting pretty straight with less reffing and a faster pace, which I think people are liking.

Vince was trying to make it real. When the ratings tanked, that's when they turned to him for the gimmicks and boost ratings.

Oh man, look at that one. They blew a review, and the guy in the booth says he can't see an angle where the ball hits the ground and the ref on the field literally says everyone on the field thinks it's incomplete. Even the fans thought it was incomplete. The ball obviously hit the ground, but view was blurry, so they opted to not change the call on the field.

It's strange to look at a sideline and not see a total mass of humanity. They keep cutting to to Quakertown, PA's own Tim Lewis, the head coach for Birmingham, and I don't know if another human being was with him in the shot the entire game.

For week 1 of a brand new league, the play has been fine. The offensive play is lagging behind the defensive, but I expect by mid-season, once the OLs have gelled more and QB/WR timing improves, it will be more balanced and entertaining.

Birmingham's attendance: 17,039

Not stellar for the opener but the weather in the South this weekend has sucked. Supposed to be sunny next weekend, we'll see how it goes.
