Do you think asplund could be a good 2C eventually, or more a defensive specialist bottom 6C?

I don't think he has the offensive talent to ever be a 2C.

I think if you look at his stats coming up through the SHL and AHL, Johan Larsson is a pretty good comparable. Larsson is a good #3/#4 C, so I think that's what Asplund will become.

Not disagreeing, but I've been pleasantly suprised with him in the o-zone at times so far.

Agree.

He probably won't ever be a guy pops 20 goals and 50-60 points, but he could be plenty of savvy to pop on as a wing in the top 6 or buoy a high flying young winger as they come into the league.

Really liked his tenacity in last years camp. High hopes for him to be a player.

Hindsight is 20/20, but even at the time I saw the Fabbri and Neal trades and said "that's it? That's all that was needed?" Can't imagine the Flames were really that set on Lucic, think they just wanted Neal outta town- either guy woulda been a good buy low candidate.

Fabbri has 10 points in 12 games....Botts sleeping.

Uh huh... Call me when he makes it thru a full (or even 3/4...) season - He's literally always hurt. I've been watching the kid since he played in Guelph, super talented w/ a body made of glass...

It's the ultimate risk-reward type of move for Yzerman and his tank squad, but the lost man-games aren't worth the risk if you're trying to win now IMO. 30 NHL GMs took a pass, not just Botts...

Fabbri maybe, but anyone who says they saw Neal's impressive resurgence coming before that trade was made is lying...

Yeah, I've liked Asplund's decision-making both with and without the puck. He's not gonna be a big skill player, but he reads and anticipates the game well and has enough skill to make some plays. He could definitely have a few more points than he does if Vesey knew how to score on a breakaway.

Who gives a crap about the 29 other teams. This is about Buffalo and Botts getting his job done

Fabbri is delicate & has more red flags than a Chinese military parade at this point, and that opinion is clearly league wide (incl STL clearly)... Which is unfortunate for him.

Yzerman's season was over in the middle of October which affords him the flexibility to take a flyer on 'buy low' guys and give them an extended look. If the Red Wings had been 4pts out of a playoff spot Stevie doesn't make that deal either...

If the Sabres were winless, Botterill still doesn't make the deal.

My forward line-up based on current available players and no trades:

Line 1: Vesey / Eich / Sheary

I know some will hate this. My logic is that Jack drives a line, Vesey has been better lately and maybe playing with Jack will give Sheary a boost. Vesey and Sheary are playing to stay in the NHL; even though they are on his line they would still need to compete for ice time with Jack as Jack will be double shifted occasionally on lies 2 and 3. If they are not working on any given night they will find themselves playing down the line-up.

Line 2:

Skinner / Mitts / Reinhart

Perhaps Mitts is not ready for the role, but I think it is time to give him a stretch with line-mates that can drive offence. He can't be a 2nd line centre if he never plays regularly with top 6 talent.

Line 3:

Mojo / Larry / Olie

Remember when line 2 was Skinner / Mojo / Sobotka. This line is at least as good because Mojo is better at wing than at centre and Larry is better than Sobotka.

Line 4:

Girgs / Asplund / take your pick of Lazar, Dea, ERod, Okposo, Sobotka or nobody when they opt to go with 7 D-men.

As stated, Eichel would double shift on lines 2 and 3 on occasion in place of Mitts and Larry.

Dahlin for starters. You have to factor in inflation and cap rising.

That's far from a sure thing. The only D in the league with higher cap hits than Eichel are Karlsson and Doughty, and those were both UFA paydays for guys with far more impressive resumes than the one Dahlin's currently got.

Never said I saw this resurgence coming, just thought he could still be a useful player that would have improved our lineup. Flames were likely looking for someone gritty so I'm not sure what we coulda offered outside of McCabe, but I definitely thought "Lucic was all it took? Crap, Neal's better than Pominville at least."

How the hell do you end up with a roster like this in december?
I could understand a certain imbalance after selling at the TDL or around 1st july but Botts has managed to get stuck in a half way build for 5 months.
He really is the procrastinator.

Would be nice to get the real team together soon so that Krueger can start to build something with the group. Everyone knows there are a bunch of dead players skating right now.

That center market seems so thin this year.

Hall appears to be the only game changer available in the next year, that you should feel comfortable paying a bunch of money to.

I suspect Mitts or Marjo will be plenty good 2C riding shotgun with Hall.

It's a gamble, but it really comes down to how expensive can nj make it.
Really? He's been hurt for a ton of games nearly every year but his Hart year. We don't have that type of cap space to sign him at all.

Giving up an asset like Jacob De La Rose is not high risk at all. That low risk high reward trade for Fabbri is one that Botterill sometimes tries but fails at because he and his staff can't evaluate talent.

I wanted Fabbri as part (not the main part) of the ROR trade, because he was a high reward buy low piece. Instead we get of the corpses of Berglund and Sobotka. Even if Fabbri gets injured he's worth more of a shot than those two, or Jacob De La Rose.

For the caliber of player Botterill gave St. Louis, you'd think he could've negotiated Fabbri to be thrown in instead of Berglund or Sobotka.
