because expecting more from a player does not mean they are bad at something...he is fine defensively, he can be even better is the damn point that you simply cannot see..

You're right, he's fine which is why the head coach is singling him out publicly in practice. lmao, keep reaching for those straws.

"He can be good defensively," Colliton told reporters. "He just has to commit to it. When he’s engaged and keeping his shifts shorter, it’s much easier for him to play high level away from the puck, and that’s what we expect."

He basically said he is good defensively when he is committed to it, he just wants to see him more committed than he has been.

He wants him to be the best he can defensively, not just fine.

singling out players that you know can do more, have another level to reach isn't necessarily a bad thing at all - you are confusing these comments for motivation vs believing the player is bad defensively..not sure how you can't see that..

...

The only one reaching for straws is you. A coach is singling a player out and making comments that he can be better, if he commits to it, and making statements like "He can be good defensively."

Then you somehow get from that... "He's bad." Who is reaching for straws, exactly?

He can be good which means he's often not. He was benched for not being good enough on defense last year, he's already been singled out AFTER 1 GAME this year. But ya, he's pretty good, definitely a top pairing guy.

The fact that Gus and Keith are the top pair speaks volumes as to the state of Blackhawks back end. What point are you attempting to make exactly?

I've been somewhat critical of him, and despite being annoyed at times with the Gus love fest here, I cannot recall a single poster that has said he's a top pairing guy.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if someone did say it, or something along those lines, once or twice, but there are dozens of posters on HF Hawks; not one of them is seemingly willing to die on the "Gus is a top pairing defender" hill. You're either making a big deal off of a small, meaningless comment, or you are wrong. Either way, it doesn't look all that great for you.
