Draft Hats this year are being done by fanatic. Thoughts on it?

Better than a lot of 'em. I'm generally a fan of KISS. I own two Canes hats these days, one black, one red, both fitted cotton with the primary logo in front and a secondary logo on the back, and nothing else. That comes closer to just a normal, wearable ballcap than pretty much anything else I've ever seen at a draft, despite the random dots on the front and the whatever on the bill, so I approve.

Not sure if this was posted before or not. Interesting read about his background.

Top prospect Andrei Svechnikov is ready to be the NHL's next Russian star

Tell me Rod isn't going to absolutely love this guy.

"Both Vanbiesbrouck and LaFontaine describe Svechnikov as a gym rat who never missed an optional skate. “You basically had to give him a key to the rink,” LaFontaine says. “There were times when you had to tell him, ‘Andrei, we have three games coming up. Rest.’ Otherwise, he would just keep working.”

Svechnikov not only pushes the pace on the ice, (Sens prospect Aaron) Luchuk says it’s next to impossible to keep up in the weight room when he’s at his top form.

Where will he go from there? “I see him as a regular 40-goal scorer [in the NHL] — in that range — and a point a game,” (Colts GM Jason) Ford says. “If he keeps on developing, he could be even more.”

His family history is quite interesting too. People are going to eat this guy up, and unfortunately one of them will be Tripp. I can just hear the incessant family references now.

If Svech is as good as people are saying, taking Dahlin #1 seems like a mistake.

How many dmen in the NHL would you rather have over someone who you expect to be a 40 goal 80 point player, and maybe better?

Have you seen the Dahlin hype? Buffalo fans are asking themselves "Is Dahlin going to be the best D of all time (Orr) or simply just a generational (Doughty) level talent?"

Canes are just fortunate. Svechnikov didn't fully get his due because an injury year made his stats pop less. Plus Russia was stacked at the WJC so Svechnikov got limited opportunity (I had him in my pool and watched fairly closely). Once you dig in it is pretty clear he is comparable to most #1 overall forwards taken in the past decade.

If he can score like Karlsson and play defense like Slavin, I take that guy ten out of ten. But, I question if Dahlin is that guy. He is a very good player, but I get a strong feeling there is some group think going on with his projections.

I’d rather have Hedman than Tarasenko, AINEC.

That’s basically the choice Buffalo has to make here. It’s not a hard one for them.

Some feel like Dahlin could be a generational type defenseman. He is and has been one of the most hyped d-men I've ever seen since following the draft (15 years or so). Much more so than other fellow 1st overall d-men Erik Johnson and Aaron Ekblad. Having a potential talent like him who you can throw on the ice for basically half a game is too much to pass up.

Maybe if Svechnikov were a center, there would be more legitimate debate about who goes first. But even with Svechnikov as a winger, he still seems to be a #1 overall type talent. Just not in this draft.

The telling thing with me is that Dahlin has been on the radar as the #1 pick for this draft for about the past 3-4 years. We've seen that happen before and guys just simply fall off when under the microscope for that long (Jones, Larsson, and Ekblad) and end up going later then they should aside from Ekblad as that was a down draft year. The telling thing to me is that Dahlin hasn't fallen off, and this is hardly a weak draft year. In fact in most years Svechnikov would be getting the same level of hype as a guy like Hall or Tavares. There's just no way that Buffalo doesn't take Dahlin at #1, just flat out can't see it. I don't think he's going to be generational, but he's going to be elite in the same way that Jones and Hedman are elite.

It’s an interesting comparison that I’ve been thinking about lately.

Are we building to be the St Louis Blues if the last 5 years? Those were teams that you could look at the forward group on paper and say it was one of the deeper forward groups in the league, but didn’t have a legit 1C, instead relying on Tarasenko as their top scoring option.

We’ve got our Backes in Staal. We’ve got our Tarasenko in Svechnikov. The 1-to-1 comparisons start to break down a little, but they’ve got Schwartz and Fabbri, we’ve got Aho and Teravainen. They’ve got Pietrangelo, Parayko, and a good group behind them, we’ve got Slavin, Faulk, and a good group behind them. And etc.

I’m not saying the talent levels are the same (I’ll actually take the future of our forward group now over what theirs was), but the team structure seems similar. And while they never made it all the way without that true 1C, they certainly came close and were a legit contender for a few years.

It’s as good comparison as there is. Right down to having to say prayers over their goalie tandem every summer until they managed to pick up Halak.
