Is there a "rule" that every 1st rounders must be given an ELC?
i don't know of such rule.

The point is, there’s one every three years or so, very rare. They all get signed.

Why do teams sign players to ELCs who will just end up going back to their junior club/Europe? Wouldn't it be better to keep their rights and not sign them until the last possible time?

What possible benefit would that give the team?

Like the thread idea. Eventually most will sign but it's interesting to see those who get signed early. It's a bit of extra vote of confidence from the team, so it's informative especially when it happens with the later picks.

Preds drafted like only 2 USHL guys, and a goalie from Czech, only player we could sign is Yeryomenko lol, which could be possible, tbh he’s not a bad prospect.

For couple of examples; Riley Tufte (2016 1st round ,25th pick, Dallas) has yet to sign,
Cole Makar, (2017 4th overall) has yet to sign.
So, there are teams that does not automatically sign their 1st rounders

Trent Frederic,2016 1st rounder,Boston, not signed
Ryan Poehling, 2017 1st rounder, Montreal, not signed
Jake Ottinger, 2017, 1st rounder, Dallas, not signed

all of those players are NCAA players and will not be signed until they (their teams) are ready (for them) to turn pro.

Trent Frederic signed his ELC in March.

but in general college guys don't generally sign as quickly as others, because they won't be college guys anymore.
