What Makes a Prospect?
A player will be considered a prospect until he meets the following criteria:

If a prospect is a skater (forward, defenseman) and has played in 65 NHL games or more before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday; or, if a goaltender has played in 45 NHL games before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday, that player will be considered graduated to the NHL. Conversely, if a player completes the season of his 24th birthday without passing those milestones, then that player will no longer be considered a prospect by Hockey’s Future, regardless of the player’s status with his NHL club.

An NCAA player who signs his first contract at or above the age of 22 has three years to meet the above criteria (65/45), while those NCAA players that turn pro under the age of 22 will be subjected to the criteria above.

European players who sign their first NHL contract at or above the age of 22 have three seasons from the time they sign that contract to meet the above criteria. Those European players below the age of 22 that have signed a NHL contract will be subjected to the criteria in section one.

NOTE: These are general guidelines and should be followed the majority of the time but certain players may still be listed as prospects if circumstances warrant.

This is what I said on Virta in the previous thread. Sorry that I cannot move over any of the other posts; I no longer have those powers. :)

I've always liked Virta. I think with him it just comes down to whether the scouts that watched him this year saw enough progress at a higher level of competition to think he can become an NHL player, and whether his chances are marginal or something more.

He reminds me somewhat of Ryan Mantha. A good D+1 followed by a somewhat down D+2. I know Virta has picked it up, but overall his year probably wasn't exactly what anyone was hoping to see (also seems as if most of Virta's points lately have been on the PP; I could be mistaken but that's my recollection). And, like Mantha, I honestly have no idea what the team will do. I though they should sign Mantha, because why not? But they evidently didn't see enough (which in retrospect, may have been a mistake had Mantha not suffered his potential career-ending injury).

There's also the matter of, do the Rangers think they have enough other guys like Virta already in the system? Do they have their eye on some other European free agents like Meskanen and Lindqvist, or college free agents? They may feel that Gettinger, Lemieux, Meskanen, and some other targets have a better chance of filling the role Virta would fill.

Still, I would sign him. Give him an out clause that if he's in Hartford at a certain date he can exercise and leave. I don't see much downside in giving him a shot. That said, like Mantha, I just don't know what they're going to do. If they don't offer him a contract I'd be mildly disappointed but not surprised.

If Rykov finishes season in a few next days, will they bring him to the league, I wonder. I think, he has chances to make Team Russia for WHC, but the NHL allure may turn out to be too strong to resist it for him.

If he plays any games this season, will he become eligible for Expansion Draft?

I think it would be the same situation as Kravtsov where he could play < 10 games and still be exempt. But there are some differing opinions on that, it’s not exactly clear.

Rykov is older than 20 so different rules apply for him.

CBA article 13.4:
The first season in which a Player who is age 20 or older plays in one (1) or more
Professional Games shall constitute the first year for calculating the number of years he is
exempt from Regular Waivers.

If Rykov comes over before the end of the season, it’ll be on a Hartford PTO. ELC kicks in after July 1. Then he’ll be in training camp.

Rykov was scoreless, -1, played 23+.

Lakatos was scoreless and only played 1:35. They sent him out to kill a penalty and that was it.

Pajuniemi was scoreless in 13:41. He has gone 6 games without a point.

Virta had a primary assist, 5-v-5 no less.

It's hard to read about Lakatos, because he really had a decent D+1 season. Since then he's actually regressed. I'm not mad at the Rangers for taking him, though. The Rangers that year did exactly what they should be doing in every draft, which is gambling on Euros in the 4th, 5th, and 6th rounds, even if they are overage by a year.

Rykov was on the ice for two goals against (one on PK) but had absolutely nothing to be faulted for with either.

His draft year was the good year. Particularly the playoffs. His D+1 year was up-and-down, with the coach publicly criticizing his attitude and with him getting sent down for a couple games. His overall production was basically stagnant, which you never want to see, but certainly not for a prospect in the Czech league, which is relatively weak.

I agree with your overall point, though. Taking players like him in the later rounds is a good strategy. Someone had posted a statistic around the time we drafted him, that overage prospects taken in the final couple rounds are more likely to make it than guys in their first year of eligibility. They're farther down their development path so you have a clearer picture of what they are. The young guys, it's more of a lottery ticket. Like Riley Hughes is a ticket--clear talent but so far away, you really don't know what you're getting.

I think it's smart to take some overage guys late, but also some lottery tickets on the first time eligible guys. Balance it out.

There are exceptions though.

I'm really interested to see where Samuel Fagemo gets drafted in June. He's an overage player but his SHL numbers are almost as good as Elias Pettersson's in his D+1 season. I'd spend a late 1st/early 2nd on him personally. He's very close to making the NHL, if he won't already be in the league next season.

Fagemo is porducing better then almost all other swedes in his d+1 year. Did a quick check and he is outproducing players like Lindberg, Jarnkrok, Rask, Pajarvi-Svensson, Marcus Johansson etc. None of these are stars, but when comparing Fagemo to them he looks like a good bet to atleast be a decent NHL player. NYR might at this stage go for a more bang/bust pick thu.

Producing much better than Zibanejad as well
He does rely on Ryan Lasch a lot, though he’s still a 1st rounder for me

Ragnarsson has a game about to begin.

Reunanen and Lukko are playing TPS and Pajuniemi. On a nice note for TPS, they got back their captain, former friend of our Lauri Korpikoski. He was out all season with myocardial inflammation and inflammatory bowel disease. He's back today and is the captain. His return probably decreases Pajuniemi's TOI, but helps TPS in general.

Yesss, let the Russian kids play the IIHF WC and then sign and come over!

Rykov, Shesty, Kravstov ... ohh baby mama! Drooling at the thought and sight of that camp.

We've been waiting for this, I don't remember though if the board was expecting them to come over next year or this year.

Shesterkin was the only one to get any games with the actual "National" team this season, the others were on the "Olympic" team. So, Rykov and Kravtsov in particular would be far from locks to make the WC team. And also, they now will have to contend with Russian players coming back after the completion of their NHL season. Not to say they can't make it but it will be very tough.

They can still play for the Olympic team or the NT in the Euro Hockey Tour.

Too many Russians. They'll inflict their laziness on the rest of the team.

Such a bizarre stereotype, too. Where does it come from? Anyone know? Maybe because of the Russian hockey “mystique” from the 1970s where the players made things look easy and smooth. I dunno. But it’s bizarre to me that Russians have the “lazy” stigma. So random.
