@Yopo my guess is that the commercials are not licensed to be shown out of North America. (Lots of reasons from using copyrighted background music, etc., which is different outside of source country. Much less a local car dealerership that would get nothing from showing ad to someone thousands of miles away.)

You might think there would be someone in the destination country that might be interested in "filling that time" (nominally 90 seconds/break). (Perhaps helping lower the cost of TV broadcast to consumer.)

Kinda surprised that there's no pre-puck drop nor intermission segments usually.

Just looking at all these ratings just proves the nhl has no fans besides their loyal ones. That can explain the near numbers of nbc and nbcn. There’s always a bigger audience for sports games on free tv than cable.

The sport is what it is. The ratings jumping 10 percent one year and down 5 percent the next, only to jump 8 percent the next proves it’s stagnate. It’s probably the teams that are playing and the importance of the matchup helps with those numbers.

The nhl is still lucky to make the top 50 in cable ratings for regular season games and game 7 (car-wash)can not even beat out the nba pregame and is stuck between that and mtv the challenge. The sport is regional and has its own fan base. It has yet to grow out to the mainstream. That just is what it is and idk how they expand to the mainstream. They had 20 years to try.

Ratings for the playoffs, as of today anyway, have increased three consecutive seasons. This is without NBC's prized pigs (Chicago, NYR, Philadelphia, Detroit, LA, Twin Cities) aside from Boston & Washington advancing beyond the first round during this time frame. The fact that NBC has seen growth in playoff numbers with markets like Ottawa, Winnipeg, Nashville, Tampa, etc. is pretty impressive.

The Capitals-Hurricanes game you mentioned, was a non-exclusive broadcast, so neither of the local markets were factored into NBC's numbers.

And yet they're still going to be receiving almost a billion dollars from just media rights after the new US tv deal is signed, so your "woe is me the nhl is still niche" thing is somewhat irrelevant

  • CBJ-BOS Game 1 on NBCSN produced a 1.22 overnight rating, the highest overnight for a Second Round opening night game in five years (MTL-BOS, 1.43, 2 OT), and up 15% vs. PIT-WSH last year (1.06);

  • DAL-STL Game 1 on NBCSN produced a 0.92 overnight rating, up 42% vs. last year’s comparable Game 1 (SJ-VGK, 0.65);

  • Locally, CBJ-BOS delivered an 8.3 local rating in Columbus, the best-ever rating for a Blue Jackets game on an NBCU network in the Columbus market. Boston delivered an 11.7 rating, up 14% vs. comparable 2018 Second Round games;

  • Locally, DAL-STL delivered a 12.5 local rating in St. Louis, up 39% vs. comparable 2017 Second Round games. Dallas registered a 3.1 local rating, up 15% vs. comparable Second Round 2016 games.

No Dallas local rating?
Curious to see the ratings in the Bay Area tonight. Want to see if the Sharks fresh off their greatest win in franchise history can put a dent into the Warriors rating. Both games have identical 7:00 PM local starts.

That numbers are great. Hard to believe that those teams are doing so well on TV.

I think they are benefitting from the three game 7's and the amount of games going into overtime. Still though, given the markets involved, seeing 20%+ jumps from last year (which was up from 2017 and 2016) is very nice to see.

Awesome to see the Jackets/Bruins almost beat out the NBA.

Lots of folks in Raleigh were watching at the teams watch party Downtown and other bars/restaurants so thats awesome to see the 4.4. Someone stated this would be a low-rated series when it looked like in March these two teams would play each other in the 1st round. Still early but so far I think even casual Hockey fans are happy to see some new blood take the stage.

Amazing what good ownership can do to rejuvenate the market. Dundon has been a blessing. Karamos ran the team into the ground for too long. Raleigh is a great market, the fans though had turned on ownership (kinda like what's happening in Ottawa and Melnyk)

Lockouts. My buddy mentioned he was into hockey and knew players, but when the game stops, interest stops.

Doesn’t help that the NBC primetime games they’ve gotten so far this playoffs so far have been duds. 6-0 and 5-1.

Last night was not a dud and I expect you will see good numbers out of New England and Northern Ohio.
