NBC has got to love how the first round shook down in the west. St Louis/Dallas is perfect for them, big markets, and Colorado knocking off the Flames. San Jose/Vegas is almost a wash, but Vegas would be better. The Las Vegas market has always been a strong hockey ratings market, even before the NHL came to town

Important to remember the game was blacked out on NBCSN in Vegas.

Keep things in perspective.

NBC paid the NHL $0.00 to air regular season games + playoffs + Stanley Cup Final for the first broadcast TV contract after the 2004 lockout. They shared ad revenue, only after all broadcast expenses were paid to NBC. The NHL wasn't guaranteed even 1 penny.

The latest deal was considered a monster contract when it was signed. Live sports deals have gone completely insane since. Even the friggin' WWE got $1 billion from FOX (which is just straight up comical).

I was told a couple of years ago that NBC had made back their investment in the NHL by the 2014-15 season and it has been all gravy since except for talent and production coats. The Blackhawks were the major reason as took in millions on local games shown on WMAQ-TV Channel 5 in Chicago which they own.

Going into the second round NBC owns the network stations in

New York ( Islanders)
Dallas (Stars)
Washington (Capitals)
Boston (Bruins)
Bay Area (Sharks)

St. Louis, Denver, Columbus and Carolina the local stations are affiliates and NBC/Universal doesn't get the local revenue.

NBC executives are very happy this morning.

In Canada, Rogers executives are looking at massive red ink as unexpectedly all 3 Canadian teams were knocked out and 4 days ago Toronto looked to be in good shape to advance. They have some Raptors games ( contract is split with TSN/Bell ) but the Blue Jays season looks bleak.

Let's look at the actual numbers

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2019/04/stanley-cup-ratings-nbc-cable/

Stanley Cup playoff ratings are picking up steam, except on NBC.

Sunday’s Bruins-Maple Leafs first round Stanley Cup playoff Game 6 earned a 1.0 rating and 1.81 million viewers on NBC, down 29% in ratings and 23% in viewership from last year (Penguins-Flyers: 1.4, 2.34M). Compared to Senators-Bruins in 2017, ratings fell a tick but viewership increased 5% from 1.72 million.

Despite the drop, the Bruins’ series-tying win was the most-watched game of the postseason. The previous high was set by Game 2 of the series the previous weekend.

The previous night, Hurricanes-Capitals Game 5 had a 0.9 and 1.56 million — down 18% in ratings and viewership from last year (Maple Leafs-Bruins: 1.1, 1.89M) and down 31% and 24% respectively from 2017 (Canadiens-Rangers: 1.3, 2.06M). The Capitals’ blowout win ranks as the least-watched NHL playoff game on primetime broadcast television.

Rounding out the NBC slate, Stars-Predators Game 5 had a 0.8 (-11%) and 1.16 million (-20%) earlier Saturday. Through two weeks, all six playoff games on NBC have declined.

Of course, the US numbers would be down for the Sunday afternoon game as only one US city was involved compared to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia a year earlier. The Saturday game was Washington ( never a rating powerhouse even in DC and Carolina who we never see ratings for (along with Nashville)

Also this year the game went up against 'The Ten Commandments' on ABC which is a traditional family viewing experience during Passover/Easter much like 'It's A Wonderful Life' at Christmas.

From NBC Sports:

The 0.81 overnight rating on @NBCSN for @GoldenKnights @SanJoseSharks Game 7 overtime classic ranks as the network's best First Round late game in 8 years AND second-best late game on record behind only Chicago-Vancouver (4/26/11; 0.91).

Last night’s Game 7 between @MapleLeafs & @NHLBruins on @NBCSN delivered a 1.09 overnight rating, NBCSN’s second-best for a First Round game on record, only slightly trailing last year’s Toronto-Boston Game 7 (1.12).

NBC got screwed on having Boston playing a Canadian team and then a bunch of small market teams being the games on the broadcast network.

Boston-Washington would be good for them. Boston/Washington vs Columbus/NYI would be good for them. The west could be good for them but probably not until the conference finals and that strongly depends on the market and thew ability for a bandwagon to develop there.

NBC needs night games. While the eff cares about the news in 2019. Go online to get your news

First off, any primetime network show/rereun or news show is going to garner more viewers than any NHL game, and almost any non-NFL sporting event. Secondly, NBCSN needs programming which the NHL provides and at the very least it appears the NHL has become a solid cable property.

Bruins score another decisive ratings victory over Celtics on Easter Sunday

Hockey
The Bruins scored decisive wins on and off the ice Sunday. In addition to forcing a Game 7 against the Maple Leafs, they also trounced the Celtics in the ratings, beating the C’s by a four-point margin.
Easter Sunday was one of those special days in Boston sports, with our own holy trinity of teams all taking part in various high-stakes match-ups. The Bruins won the day, garnering a 10.5 rating for men ages 25-54, which is their highest number to date. The game was broadcast on NBC, so Playstation Vue's decision to drop NESN did not affect the number. It will be interesting to see if there’s any impact when the Bruins take the ice for Game 7 on Tuesday.
Given the Bruins’ series against Toronto has been far more captivating than the Celtics’ postseason to date, it’s not surprising to see them come away with another ratings win. The Celtics drew a 3.3 rating for their Game 4 clincher over the Pacers in the men 25-54 demo, which was carried on ABC. The Bruins bested the Celtics when they went head-to-head last Wednesday and Friday as well.

Why did you leave out the next paragraph?

"Though the Bruins have beaten the Celtics so far, that might not be the case if they advance to the next round. Boston is slated to take on the Bucks, assuming they take care of business against the Pistons, meaning the Celtics will be pitted against one of the NBA’s brightest stars, the Greek Freak. Bruins-Blue Jackets, meanwhile, doesn’t carry the same sort of cache as Bruins-Leafs."

Everyone in Boston knows the first round of the NBA playoffs is a joke. Let's see what the ratings look like this series.

Meh. That is mere speculation and doesn't offer anything substantive. He posted the relevant information, and that is the 10.5 rating for the Bruins in the 25-54 demographic compared to the 3.3. It'll be interesting to see how the rating comparison plays out down the line, but I would expect the Bruins to continue their dominance over the Celtics in the ratings. There is generally more buzz around this city around the Bruins than the Celtics, and the head-to-head ratings are proving that.

Anyways, has local ratings for Game 7 of the Bruins-Leafs series been published anywhere yet?

Everyone knew Celtics were gonna beat the Pacers. Far less intrigue, to be fair.

Not necessarily true.

NHL finished 2nd in prime time on NBC in the key 18-49 demo advertisers care about. They had double the audience of ABC. And trailed CBS .6 to .4 mostly because CBS ran a movie that is an Easter holiday tradition that night.

The Stanley Cup final wins many nights these past few season as well, going by memory.
