Line Combos: 2018/19 Line Combinations

So I was thinking about the upcoming season, and it got me thinking about our "wealth" of wingers. Looking around the league at the best teams, they seem to be able to plug and play with their wingers by providing great Centres. Goldobin especially I think will be affected by this because he NEEDS to be given a chance to succeed this season or he will never turn into a Top 6 forward. The problem is we don't enough spots for him to play in to succeed in that role. This only gets more complicated with the addition of Pettersson possibly starting on a wing. I think this gets "solved" by running a balanced top 9 and then a 4th "checking" line.

I think running

Baertschi-Horvat-Boeser
Dahlen-Pettersson-Goldobin
Leipsic-Gaudette-Virtanen

As a base for a top 9 while giving the kids a chance to succeed is what this team needs moving forward. That leaves a combination of;

Granlund/Sutter/Archibald/Gaunce/Gagner
Eriksson, fighting for 3 spots, with Dowd, Boucher, Chaput, and Megna competing at camp but realistically not having a chance.

I think you'd have to call your "4th" line

Eriksson-Sutter-Gagner, due to their contracts and "leadership"

Leaving Granlund, Gaunce, Archibald outside looking in.

It seems like we have a logjam at the forward position.

I think we should be looking at moving any player that wasn't listed in my "top 9" for PICKS and picks only at the draft. Any picks. 3 round + is fine.

EP likely won't start as as centre if he makes the team and Gaudette won't start in the top 6 (or even top 9). I think management is committed to giving them runway for development unless they show the ability and maturity like Boeser did last year to take on the increased role quickly.

Feels like we do need a veteran C though to shield Pettersson and Gaudette especially because we will be dealing with injuries and we have next to no depth.

At the very least with Green instead of Willie you know they aren't going to try and shoehorn Sutter in as the 2nd line center. That said you have to expect that the Canucks will acquire someone to be the 2nd line center.

With Pettersson and ROR I think Eriksson can bounce back and get 20 to 25 goals.

Goldobin is with Bo and Brock I feel like he can only produce if he plays with two legit top line guys. Baer I think he can still produce without those two so balance the lines a little

Virtanen with Sutter. People are going to reply and say Virtanen playing with sutter is bad for his development. I don't think it really matters what center Virtanen has. Virtanen plays one way offensively only and that is skate the puck up ice and try to score. With Sutter as his center he can still do that. Virtanen speed can't make him a big time goal scorer. Canucks should use Virtanen another way. Virtanen has great speed, good at takeaway pucks. Canucks should use Virtanen to shut down top players. Virtanen still makes a lot of mistakes like giveaways
and positioning but he will get better over time. You can teach defence but you can't really teach offense.

Canucks factor expenditures in. So, Eriksson is top six.
Canucks cannot attract useful free agents. Tavares is not coming.
Green will not play a bunch of rookies. He limits it. This might become an issue?
Benning can't win a trade. O'Reilly isn't coming.
Canucks do not understand goaltending. This is an Achilles heel for them and they cannot fix it.
