Don't forget Henri Jokiharju.
He's also potential 1st rounder.

What comes to world juniors right now no-one can't say how many players Finland gets in North America.
Only what's already sure is Finland's defense in world juniors will be much better than it was in Helsinki but still quite young but there's will be much potential.

Also offence should be balanced even without Puljujärvi,Laine and Aho.

I have a really hard time seeing Jokiharju as a 1st rounder. I like him a lot as a prospect, but he's not putting up the kind of numbers that a small dman needs to to get noticed that early. I'd guess he'll be a mid to late 2nd rounder at this point personally, although that can definitely change fast if he finds his groove with Portland.

Anyone seen Cale Makar play? 5'10 RHD with 22 points in 19 games for the Brooks Bandits in the AJHL. Some pretty decent numbers.

There's also Ian Mitchell, another 5'10 RHD with 11 points in 22 games for the Spruce Grove Saints. I only watched him in the Ivan Hlinka but didn't like him at all there. I know there's a lot of other people who like him quite a bit though.

Anyone here seen much of Juuso Valimaki? Currently has 29 points in 25 games for Tri-City in the WHL. 6'2" Finnish LHD. People on his prospect board are saying he will probably be a 10-20 pick which will be where we end up imo. Option for potential ppqb?

This draft really doesn't have much that interest me as an Oilers fan, especially if we draft in the middle of the 1st round. If I'm Chia I'd probably try and move that 1st rounder for an established NHLer with 1 year or more left on the contract. If that's not an option I'd probably just try and move down and collect as many picks as possible.

Robin Salo seems to be the notable omission from your list PK, is that a mistake or is there something you don't like about his game?

Other than the Ivan Hlinka tournament I haven't gotten around to watching Salo yet this year. Didn't really stand out to me there, but I see that he has been solid in Liiga this year. It's so early and a couple of big tournaments still to be played that will help figure out where the international talent fits in. Nothing against Salo at all, just me being one person, its hard not to miss someone(or several someones) this early on.

Nice list. Elvenes doesn't have a fantastic shot though, his shot is the weakest part of his offensive game for sure. He is primarily a playmaker with terrific vision and silky smooth hands. Ikonen at #51 is interesting, I wouldn't rank him that high personally (yet) but you can't deny his talent. His production has taken off recently so if he keeps that up he is probably gonna climb some lists.

Good list, PK. I agree with a lot of it.

Kristian Vesalainen seems like an interesting guy in the middle of the 1st.

Yup. Vesalainen is someone I can see the Oilers targetting if we're drafting in that 10-12 range. A lot to like about his game. Big and strong kid with good speed who can both pass and shoot. If not Vesalainen I wouldn't mind Miro Heiskanen. Very promising defenseman. It's all about the finns these days :D

Fair enough, had a pretty good guess that was the case just had to ask. I've got him in the 25-45 range right now personally.

There are certainly some good Finns again this year, but I think this draft is going to be dominated from the late first round into the third round by solid depth picks from the OHL. Players like Entwistle, Strome, Chmelevski, Suzuki, Meireles, Schnarr, Robertson, Ratcliffe.... These guys likely aren't going to be first line NHLers, but there is a lot to like about each player, and I doubt they fall out of the third round at this point. That's a lot of forwards from a single league.

Yeah no doubt. I just think it's cool there's so many good europeans this year. There could be upwards 8-10 guys or even more of them picked in the top15. Has that even happened before?

Oilers has drafted forwards almost every draft from 2010 except 2013 when Oilers drafted Darnell Nurse.
So it's time to take best defenceman available.

Who would be that defenceman is it Liljegren, Hague, Minulin ,Salo,Vaakanainen,Jokiharju,Heiskanen or Valimaki it depends a lot on where Oilers drafts.
I know Vesalainen is intriguing prospect and he is poor-man's Puljujärvi.

But Oilers need that TOP4 dman so badly there's no sense to use again 1st pick for another winger.
Right now Oilers chances to make playoffs are pretty damn good so it's possible Oilers is going to draft range 15-20.

Good list but next-time add Finnish center Aleksi Heponiemi on that list.
He's been really good in Swift Current Broncos in 28 games Heponiemi has scored 31 points ( 6 goals and 25 assists).

And he's Swift Current's 2nd best scorer and leading scorer of WHL rookies.
Heponiemi isn't big guy only 5'9 tall but he's very good playmaker center who's powerplay specialist Heponiemi has recorded 18 assists on powerplay in WHL this season.

Here's Buttons November Rankings list.

http://www.tsn.ca/craig-s-list-patrick-liljegren-occupy-top-two-spots-1.620528

I know many hate on Button, but I do like his Prospect analysis most times as he does actually scout these guys personally.

As someone who has been in the scouting industry for a few years and has personally chatted with Button I can tell you he is not going out and watching all these kids live. Think about it, every NHL team, CHL team and scouting organization (Future Considerations, ISS, Redline etc) has scouts in most large cities around NA and in major hockey areas of Europe so why would TSN be the exception and have one guy travelling the world/NA watching every player? Also how does he have time to watch all these players and still be on tv? He doesn't.

I know for a fact that he does go and watch some players (which is obvious) but he gets a lot of his info from world tournaments (U18, Hlinka, WJC) and doesn't see as many of these players live as people are lead to believe.

What's the lowdown on Stelio Mattheos?

He seems like another interesting option in the middle of the 1st.

I'm interested in hearing how he looks this season also. He was very dynamic for Winnipeg the season that Brandon drafted him 1st overall in the WHL draft but was a bit underwhelming last season as a rookie. Ill admit that I haven't watched Brandon extensively this season but last season he greatly struggled with consistency but at the same time he was often on the 3rd line and didn't get prime minutes due to being on a Brandon team that was very deep upfront. Last season he displayed good speed, an underrated shot and a decent frame as well as slick hands and solid vision. The problem was that he didn't always want to battle or play with urgency. He often got caught floating and just going through the motions.

Curious to hear what other people who have seen him more this season have to say. I've heard that he's bigger, stronger and willing to engage more physically now. Also that he has made solid development strides but still has a ways to go before being able to be that go to guy at the junior level. With Patrick likely in the NHL next season Brandon will likely look to him for that role imo.

I know he doesn't go to ALL games. Not even the amateur scouts who do it for a living go to ALL games. Lol. That wasn't what I was getting at. Bet I've watched more WHL games in person than Button has in the last decade.
