This is the most cap space the Penguins have had on July 1st in the cap era, wouldn't you think? Outside of maybe 2005 when they went on that spending spree with guys like Palffy, Recchi and Leclair.

But almost 15 of those 21 million will go to renewing the contracts of Dumo, Sheary and Schultz and signing a backup goalie.
Not much will be left.

I'd say we can get Sheary, Dumo and S hits done for ~11mil, leaving 10 mil left over. We can get a backup for ~1mil and we have Jarry. That is lots to go shopping with, especially if we move ~4mil out as part of a trade.

Those 3 will be getting a combined $12 million max.

JR can add a 3C and a defenseman if he chooses to stay pat otherwise.

Will be interesting to see what happens with Maatta and Hags.

The Horny situation is tricky. Not going to play with Sid. Doesn't work with Geno. And, if you're playing Phil apart from Geno, where does Horny slot? I still think they keep him to play out his last year, but . . .

Well, I'd say at least 12 for those 3 and 1 for a keeper.
Schultz won't be cheap.
8 million isn't a lot as there are several holes to fill.
Will be hard to make a big splash, but I trust Jim's judgement.

close to 21 M in cap space now with Flower gone.

Gotta think JR is chomping at the bit to beef up his D now unless he has a deal already lined up.

From Schmidt, maybe Theodore to Hamonic(unlikely for us), Vatanen or Manson(if ANA is still moving one), Tanev, Brodin.

UFA's = Shattenkirk(unlikely/cost too much), Alzner, Stone, Kulikov, Del Zotto, Franson, Daley, Smith, etc

It's a great time to beef up a D-core if you're JR.

There has to be a reason Hags is in Vegas. Can't just be that Sid had an extra ticket. Could it be a Hagelin and Pouliot for Schmidt deal in the works?

Pens currently have 9 forwards, 3 defensemen, and 1 goalie under contract and 21.75M in cap space.

So, let's say Sheary, Dumo, Schultz for the 12M people here are floating.

10 forwards, 5 defensemen, and 1 goalie under contract with 9.75M in cap space left.

7th defenseman, 12th and 13th forward, and backup goalie run you say 3.25M.

So, you've got 6.5M for a 3C and good defenseman.

Gotta think Hags and Maatta could be in play IF JR is planning anything bigger, because he'll need the cap space.

Schmidt or Franson are the guys I want on D. Colin Miller too but it seems like he's going to the Leafs.
