A lot of talk about a proven vet backup goalie. How high would you go though??

Jarrys future here is to be Murrays back up. Why not get a vet goalie for min. In the ahl and have him and Jarry battle it out in camp?

Condone just got $2.4mm. I wouldn't go over 1m for a backup goalie.

So the Isles may be out on Duchene because they no longer have a top-4 D to trade (source: Arthur Staple) and the Pens may be out on Bonino thanks to the market (per Mark Madden).

So the ask from Sakic must be Mattaa + Sprong + 1st. If JR is able to not include Sprong then I think he pulls the trigger. Not sure what else of value COL would find though.

Depends on how much space is left. I'd re-sign all the RFA's and then see if theres space left to get a better back up.

On the backup situation, I want to pay under $1 million. In fact, I'd just bring in a couple of guys on PTO's and sign one of them after camp to whatever they agree to that's cheapest. I honestly think Jarry can/will beat out any number of guys we bring in. So, say you bring in a Pavelec/Niemi on a PTO, and you bring in a younger type like Dansk/Bibeau, then you sign the cheapest guy to play a lot in the AHL and stay sharp, while Jarry gets to learn his chops in the big league.

I was not a huge fan of Da Costa his first time in the NHL, but he is the TYPE of below-the-radar move I would like to see as far as our center depth is concerned. There could be other guys in the KHL who have interest in leaving for a shot/another shot at the NHL. There are also some guys who have been toiling in the minors that could help, as well.

One guy I have always liked is Kyle Rau, a player the Panthers just chose not to qualify. He is not big, but I like his energy and he can make plays. He has played wing in the NHL, not sure if he played C for the AHL farm club. I know he is a natural center.

When we picked up Cullen, we were taking a flier on a guy, basically. We did the same thing with Eric Fehr. It's time to find the next Cullen or Fehr.

After the RFA's (11-12M), a quality 3C (Bones or another 3-4M), and maybe a 4c (1m?), your talking about a backup goalie, or a 5/6 D for about 3M. I'd rather spend most of that on a D instead of pay 2m for a backup. Pay 0.7 for the backup and spend the rest on a D imo.

Isn't 4x4m a pretty fair number for a decent 3C at this point in the NHL?

I dunno. I feel like if that's what it'd take to keep Bonino and solidify our top 9 for the next 4 years, I'd do it easily.

I think Maatta hate is mostly driving these rumors that the Penguins are in on Duchene. It makes no sense because a) the Penguins don't have much in the pipeline on defense currently, b) Duchene would be more of a luxury than a need right now, and c) supposedly the asking price from Colorado for Duchene is absurd.

If we don't get McElhinney or another reasonably decent backup like that, I'd just find someone semi-crappy that will definitely sign for around $700-800k and then get a better one later in the season. I think we can conceivably get a 3C, 4C and backup goalie all at the deadline. Not optimal to do that of course since we'd pay out the nose, but just saying we have options besides getting all these in the next few days.

Who would the Pens get to replace Maatta though? There's nobody within the organization even close to stepping in and playing top 4 minutes.

At the deadline we were in talks with Buffalo. If I were to guess, JR is looking at Kulikov and Franson. I like the idea of Kulikov if his back is healed up. Franson is a bit of a train wreck but so was Schultz and his possession numbers are too good to ignore. Plus he gives us another canon shot from the point.

I don't think we have a traditional top 4. Dumoulin/Letang will play 20-25. And the rest will split what's left.

Names I would kick the tires on in the goalie free market for backup, that are reasonable approaches, in no particular order...

Johnson
Nilsson
McElhinney
Kinkaid
Kuemper

But echoing what others have said, I wouldn't go over 1M-1.5M for any of the backups on the market. I would give an exception to Johnson, signing him laterally to his previous deal of 1.7M. But that's it. Nothing over the 1.5M mark, and assumedly and ideally less for any of the remaining names.
