I'm really disappointed in what's happened with Rubtsov. I thought for sure he was going to be a good middle 6 two-way center for a long time. Any theories on why he's struggled so much? Did the 5 minutes a game in the KHL slow his progression or ruin his confidence? Did the move to the NA game and then fairly quick change of scenery hurt his development? It's never a good thing when player in his draft +2 season is under a PPG in the Q. Hopefully he has a bounce back season this year and looks good for the Phantoms but he's going to be a big time faller in the season's rankings and the B word is going to start being thrown around if he doesn't look good next season.

Because this is an almost year old prospect poll.

At the time Rubtsov was a 20-something 1st round pick coming off a very good performance in the Q in his D+1 year.

At the time Frost was a 20-something 1st round pick with a sub point/game season in the OHL in his D year. Hell, at the time a not small # of people were beside themselves we "reached" on Frost.

It's not like they weren't ranked neck and neck. It's a reminder about what can happen in a year.
Looool that makes sense, should have looked at the date of the OP. f*** me, right?

Do we still own Drake's rights? I'm assuming, no.

Yes, although if he just gets an AHL deal and not an ELC I should take him off the list.

It's an exciting list and might get Kosorenkov added to it. Hopefully, 6 or 7 of them become regular contributors in the NHL, 1 or 2 become superstars, and another 2 or 3 are top 6 / top pair players. Anything less than that, and I fear we'll end up like a team like the Jets, with a farm system that was highly rated but led to nothing.
I was reading thru this tread again and OMG . I pray we end up like the Jets , man what a stupid this to have said.

So five players (4 who will stick) graduated to the NHL roster.

Bardreau and Vecchione have a good shot this year.

Players with a shot at making the team at some point this season:
Aube-Kubel, Nicolas
Friedman, Mark
Goulbourne, Tyrell
Martel, Danick
Morin, Sam
Myers, Phil
Vorobyev, Mikhail
Willcox, Reece

These two may get a look depending when their junior season ends:
Frost, Morgan
Ratcliffe, Isaac

I think it is fine to have Cates in the top-20. He had a surprisingly good year.

I agree with your first two then boy are we different , putting O'Brien above guys like Rubstov etc when all he has done is prove himself at high schoollers is wishful thinking.

I mean pretty much everyone drafted before him has done more. That isn't how you rank prospects.

When factoring in upside and skill I don't think you can put guys like Rubstov (lol really) ahead of O'Brien. I could see an argument for Ratcliffe, and maybe the two college guys but that's it. Having Rubstov ahead of him is wrong.

Correct.

I would probably have O’Brien 4th as well. Best chance to be a top 6 guy after Frost and Farabee. I wouldn’t be shocked if he ends up being better than Farabee eventually.

Correct.

Good list. Obviously, mine will look different. But my only real pound the table disagreements are not having Kalynuk ranked, and Lyon at #2 over Sandstrom and even the upside of Ustimenko.

Yeah, I can't say that I took too much time thinking about it. Doing it again I'd probably slide Kalynuk behind Cates.

I'm not sure if Lyon is a prospect at all anymore, but those LV playoffs made me a believer. 11 games, 1.98GAA 0.944SV% was crazy impressive.

I wonder who, if any, will have a really big year and jump in the rankings. Who will be this years Morgan Frost?

I wonder who, if any, will have a really big year and jump in the rankings. Who will be this years Morgan Frost?

Probably no one because Frost was a 1st and had a ton of talent. A lot people above him graduated too, which made his jump seem higher. Farabee and JOB are definitely 3rd and 4th for me, but they're not climbing above Frost, if he's in the OHL. Myers ideally isn't on the rankings next year; hopefully not even at halfway. So, they'll be 2nd and 3rd even if they go off (barring next year's 1st: Jack Hughes). They could switch places, and I get that JOB is more of a mystery. We don't actually know what to expect. But Farabee is very awesome and shouldn't be downplayed because he's less mystery box.

My guess for big risers? Lycksell, Kase, maybe Rubtsov climbs back up a little though he shouldn't be torched in his ranking either because of one mediocre year (we didn't do it for Laberge last year and Rubtsov is smarter and more skilled), Kalynuk, Cates. This year: Id' say St. Ivany, but he's still playing in the USHL and doesn't have a ton of room to improve there. 4/5 are going up levels and/or getting more exposure.
