I just don't like how small he is, but I'm hearing he's the next Panarin so very smart to draft him just to have his rights if he ever wants to come over.

I'm sure a lot of teams are kicking themselves for not taking Panarin in the draft.

EDIT: Also might be friends with Sorokin, so this is a very good value pick all around.

29. Another interesting overseas story to watch at the draft: that of Anatoli Golyshev. He had 44 points in 56 games for KHL Yekaterinburg. He would be a free agent if he was 22. But he’s 21 and hasn’t spent at least one season in North America. There’s some buzz. He’s not going in the first-round, but he’ll be a second-day guy and teams are playing coy about their interest. Curious to see how high he goes.

Pronman had him 47th

Golyshev had a breakout season as a 20-year-old, as he scored the fourth-most goals in the KHL and carried his team to a postseason appearance. He's a gifted all-around offensive player who displays plus hands, good in-tight coordination and overall creativity. His best tool is arguably his shot, as he can wire chances home from the circles with consistency. He isn't as dynamic a skater as you'd like for a 5-foot-8 player, but he is certainly above-average and has an aggressive element to how he plays, and that lets him play up past his size. Although it seems like he's one of the more NHL-ready players on the list, one reason I'm not ranking Golyshev too highly is that his KHL deal runs through 2019, and there is no Russian transfer agreement.

Found a long article from a Leafs fan site hyping up this kid. Pretty sure the Leaf writer thought you could just sign him and didn't have to select him in the draft, but his praise is astonishing:

But what if I told you that the best of these thousands of players isn't getting even the slightest bit of attention and that he's hidden in plain sight? Enter Anatoly Golyshev.

Despite playing 13 minutes night, he managed 19 points in 44 games; good for the eighth-best scoring rate by a 19-year-old in the KHL. Most of the players above him have turned out pretty good; Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nail Yakupov (lockout year), Artemi Panarin, and Vladamir Tarasenko were the lines he was chasing.

Golyshev wasn't just one of the best 20-year-olds this year; he was one of the highest performing players in the entire KHL. Despite averaging a very modest 17:14 of ice time per game, Golyshev finished in a tie for 18th in points with 44 in 56 games. More impressively, he finished fourth in the league with 25 goals.; two more than Alexander Radulov, and nine more than Ilya Kovalchuk (who admittedly, is declining hard). Golyshev's 25 tallies are the most by any Under-21 player in KHL history. Or Under-22. Or Under-23.

Forward version of Sorokin, anybody?

At the time we thought he was still draft eligible, yes. Though as you'll see in the top paragraph we updated for his eligibility a few weeks back.

I'm pretty certain Golyshev is for real. Watched him heavily from November on and he's absolutely worth the risk at 95. To be an elite KHL forward at his age is not a small achievement at all.

Him and Bellows both seem to have the potential to be high-impact offensive players in the NHL: it's clear that offensive talent was what Snow was looking for in this draft.

We've struck out on high-potential mid-round Russians before (Kabanov, Petrov) but eventually we'll find our Kucherov.

Why would he play so few minutes if he was so good? Russian version of Cappy?

It was the season before the last, when he was 19 yo. The last season he had 17+ min and 25 goals in 56 games. It wouldn't be bad even for MHL, but it was in the KHL. Btw he is the same age as Buchnevich and had a way better statistics the last season. If he hadn't been that small, he'd have been picked like a couple years ago. And perhaps in the 1st round.

This kid could actually be a steal here. It seems like he ready to be in the NHL we just have to wait this contract out and see him get better.

Looks like him and Panarin had fairly similar lines in their age 21 years, should be interesting to see how Golyshev progresses.

His hand to quiver to bow goal celebration is severe confidence on display. If him and Sorokin came over at the same time....

He's not Panarin level, but still could be a very good nhler if he can withstand the nhl grind. He's a feisty player, sneaky dirty at times.

Hopefully we can get him over for this year and maybe bring Sorokin with him. Then we'll have 4 starting goalies :sarcasm:

Just saw his highlights. Wow, he can really shoot the puck, owns a very good and powerful wrist/ slap shot. Good passer and is always in great position. Does not look that fast, though.

Nashville did the same with Viktor Ardvisson two years ago and it worked out really well.

Hopefully considering what the Islanders spent they have some idea about his desire to come over, unlike other Russians they have drafted previously

This team rewrites the definition of stupid picks every year. But at least we didn't draft a munchkin on defense. Oh, right.:banghead:
