I will agree to disagree about Geno, but you are not understanding my point of view on why i brought him up. So there's that. My opinion was that he was okay. Not great. Not terrible. He really elevated his team game in the ECF and SCF. He was pretty bad in the Washington series and really good in the opening round.

But you are inevitably missing the point i'm trying to make by a country mile. Either i'm poorly explaining it, or you are just taking it on a different path.

I get what you're saying. You're saying that winning without Letang is as unlikely as winning with Geno being a pretty big non-factor. And in your mind, we did win despite Geno being a pretty big non-factor. But the point doesn't really work for me, because I don't believe we would have won this Cup if Geno was a pretty big non-factor. I think he was a huge factor in why we won.

I never once said Letang was bad for an extended period of time. He was piss poor in Game 5 of the ECF and Game 3 of the SCF. You need to go back and watch those games. It wasn't just a bad game, it was terrible/awful. They were brutal. And that brings us right back to what keeps Letang out of the Elite top 5. As dominant as he was, his bad was really really really bad. That brings us way back to the original point of why Letang stays out of the top 5 elite.

As for Geno. It's safe to say #71 did not play at the expectation of himself nor what we have all come to expect of him. He wasn't bad. He wasn't elite. He was okay to good. But what we've come to know from Geno is elite. He was not elite. But he was still 10 miles ahead of what he did in 2014-15 where a lot of us claimed he had a serious injury before going on to play the Worlds.

I think all of our stars aside from Kessel had good and bad games. I thought Kessel was the most consistently lethal guy on this team.

Agreed. Personally I would have gone Murray, Kessel, Letang, then Sid in terms of CS voting.

Truly a team effort though. No runaway CS winner.

Yeah, I just don't agree with how bad you seem to think he was.

He wasn't elite, but he was still a huge factor in winning. Calling him a pretty big non-factor is just ridiculous to me. Having 3 scoring lines was absolutely huge, and it can't happen without Geno. That line had some huge huge goals.

Ogre clearly needs to rewatch Game 5 of the ECF and Game 3 of the SCF. Or... for fun just go through the GDT/PGT. You will find your answers.

I don't know if I normally just agree with you and don't notice, or if you are just being especially condescending here. There's no reason your opinion is more valid than mine, but you sure think it is. But clearly, you must be right. Clearly, Geno was barely a factor in us winning too. 3rd on the team in scoring from the 3rd line is pretty meh. If I only rewatched the games, I would see the light.

And pointing to the HF GDT/PGT as if they mean anything at all is just funny to me

Rewatch the games objectively. Your answer will be there. ColePens is never wrong. NEVER. Okay... well sometimes.

Is it October yet?

 Enjoy the summer first. I don't want that cold weather coming back for a long time.

Yeah, because this place is so levelheaded during ECF and SCF games. That's good evidence.

Watch the games objectively. I mentioned that a bunch of times. Did you want to touch on that? Or ignore it when I said to watch it objectively?

So which 5 defensemen are better than Letang?

**** you. It's been a hot summer and I welcome fall with open arms.

Listen.. I need my tennis season. Don't rush it. I love hot/muggy when it comes to tennis. I love it.

You'd have a tough case to say that either Subban or Weber were clearly better, and they both make almost twice as much in real dollars as Letang, and have higher AAV's. So that puts them a step below IMO. Suter is good, but more expensive, and carries his cap hit until he's 40. Not the same dynamic presence as Letang.

The guys I think are better right now:

I think you can say Doughty is better all around than Letang, and he's at 7M AAV until 2019 (but oh boy, he'll hit 29 and be UFA).

I might just take Keith over Letang at his shady 5.5 cap hit. He is 33, and even though slowing down, he's still darn good.

Hedman is the guy I'd build a team around right now. Only 4M AAV next year, 7.8 after. And he's still only 25. He's a steal at that cap hit.

If you are going to evaluate who is the better defenseman, I see no reason why the AAV for each player matters.

I'll ignore contracts. Weber I'd say is in decline, Subban and Letang hover around the same area to me most of the time and I barely watched Minnesota last season.

I think you can say Doughty is better all around than Letang, and he's at 7M AAV until 2019 (but oh boy, he'll hit 29 and be UFA).

Would you say that Doughty is better offensively? I'd still say he's better than Letang but it's not all around.

I might just take Keith over Letang at his shady 5.5 cap hit. He is 33, and even though slowing down, he's still darn good.

Keith I can see.

I can see the long term value, but I don't think I'd say he's definitely better than Letang right now.

Someone like Karlsson is a great offensive player but Letang ***** all over him defensively, you can argue from different points and find defensemen who are around Letang or have hypotheticals. I still don't think there are 5 defensemen definitely better than Letang.

There are just about 5 guys you can make arguments for being better. There are not 5 who are for sure better. I really think the top end of D is a pretty big cluster in general.

Okay so again who are the elite 5 dmen that are better than Letang. I think we all agree he has his faults but just saying "he's not the top 5 because of x and y" without saying who is seems like a hollow argument.

Karlsson, Doughty, Keith, OEL are the only four I'd have ahead of him. Even then I think he can be at the level of those players. He's definitely in that tier of Hedman, Subban, Josi where they get caught out of position because they play the puck so much.
