Dude, Sid and Geno are signed into their mid thirties. Kessel is a better natural goal scorer than either. You have no clue when he'll decline.

Sharp could hit a wall next year.

Nobody wants him except Pgh, that tells you all you need to know how Kessel and his contract are viewed around the league.

If we're the only team in on Kessel that should bring the price down.

Not sure if this was discussed here but the Sun reported yesterday about a Pittsburgh offer of Scuderi, Sutter and Pouliot for Kessel with retained salary. That's almost an insultingly bad offer.

That's not true and you know it. Only 8 teams even have the option of being in on him. Most of them literally cannot fit him under the cap. Take away the no trade clause and its a 15 team bidding war.

will this board still be standing if we hold to Wednesday?

Man, the bilpolar nature is amazing.

Yesterday morning it was, "don't overpay, don't do anything stupid!!!"

12hrs later, "holy **** were going the whole offseason without making a move!?!?!!"

It's coming. Pray Rutherford refuses to push the M button. (Which I believe he may be floundering on)

they did a lot of burning of bridges.......makes it hard to change your mind. imo

Just for fun imagine Kane and Kessel were on opposite teams. Is there any doubt that Kane would be a jerk locker room cancer and Kessel would be an American Hero? Can you just imagine the story after Kane hit the cab driver had he been playing in Toronto at the time?

Kessel is American. Kessel kind of looks like a homeless guy, has an unkempt appearance, is awkward as hell, and isn't PC.

Even Crosby can't carry a poorly built team with another generational talent to help, but Kessel is expected to basically, by himself, do what Crosby and Malkin together can't do.

It's just funny how stupid the Toronto media are.

So do you think St. Louis has a secondary deal in place ready to pull the trigger if the Pens take Kessel?

I have no clue on that. I think the STL/Pitt deal is bigger than one player. But it's the Pens fallback. Sort of depends on what happens with Sutter.

Sharp has a 2 year contract worth 11.8 million.

Kessel has a 7 year contract worth 56 million.

There is way more risk with the Kessel contract, why do you think nobody wants him?

If Kessel had 3 or 4 years left on his contract he would be worth a lot more, he would have more teams after him.

It's not about "want", it's about affordability and what the cost is to acquire him.

Kessel's worth is still the same at the 3/4 year term as the 6/7 year term.

He's still a proven asset/proven super star in his prime.

In two years Sharp could/can walk away. Kessel is still here and still helping this team.

how the hell do they have the upper hand? We're the ones with backup plans.

They are in no rush to move him. They can hold on to him as long as they want until they get full value and GMJR has a terrible track record in big trades. They wont move KEssel without one of Maatta, Pouliot or Kapanen going the other way

So give them Pouliot or Kapanen. Just hold off until they budge on wanting Maatta.

And actually yes, they are in a rush to move him.

And I'm sure they started with Maatta ++ with no cap dumps or retain. That's also a bad offer.

True. But it makes me happy that JR is low-balling them (as he should) and that we have a couple of backup plans while the Leafs don't really seem to have on e(except keeping him, which would be really bad).

Why is there any reluctance at all to include Pouliot in a potential Kessel deal?
