Comparisons are stupid. How similar are Wheeler and Boyle? Just because a prospect is over 6'5 doesn't mean he's going to turn into an NHL who is over 6'5''. McCarron will be McCarron.

Some elements of his game may be comparable to an NHLer, but why limit ourselves to guys of the same size?

While we're at it :P

I'll say somewhere from Boyle to Gaustad as a centerman or Martin/McLeod to Ryane Clowe as a winger.

I just asked a question and obviously size comparisons are made to players currently in the league. I hope he turns into Mario Lemieux.

In terms of McCarron, who currently in the NHL can he become a clone of? Blake Wheeler maybe? Brian Boyle?

It's hard to find a good comparable for him. A jumbo version of Dubinsky perhaps ? Mid to late 2000 Jarred Stoll ? Something along those lines for me, big ''does a bit of every thing and competes hard'' forward with average (The good kind of average) skating. Wheeler and Boyle are actually kinda bad candidates, they were nothing like him as juniors, outside of size obviously. Both are much smoother skaters for starters.

I see him as a third liner with 2nd potential, would love to see him on the pp as a replacement for Desharnais in front of the net. We all know that will not happen, Mike will sit on the bench with Eller when power plays take place.

You really don't like Big Mac, eh?

That would be awesome (he's noticeably meaner than Wheeler as well)

He's nothing near what Wheeler is in terms of skating. Two very different players. Boyle and Gaustad are probable to pessimistic comparisons. Personally I see Bickell and Dwight King. A middle 6 forward that is tough to handle and tires the top defensemen of the other on the cycling and on the forecheck. A good complement to talented forwards that keep up with them who opens up the ice by driving the net.

McCarron has 3 things to work on in my eyes: conditioning, his first step, and the quickness of his release. Luckily he can kill two birds with one stone as I believe once he improves his conditioning his first step will be more explosive.
He has an almost elite wrister, and once he learns to get it off a little quicker it will be a very valuable weapon in the NHL. As Montreal said before, his passing game is underrated.

Nice post. I think that sounds about right.

McCarron has a smooth stride for a guy that big.

His explosion is the problem. Skating for him in general ins't an issue IMO.

Happy McCarron is getting his recognition. Guy had a wonderful tournament. Night and day from last year's showing. If he keeps this progress up, that pick will look better and better.

It might be, when it comes to closing the gap on attacking players from set defensive positions. It will obviously be his defensive/neutral zone play that takes the longest to come around as a result.

As with most prospects honestly.

Same can be said for Scherbak. A lot of the guys, unless their specialise at it, like JDLR, have to adapt to playing defence. Big or small.

I really don't see skating as a problem for him going forward either. As I said, I think he'll be the good kind of average in that department. Conditioning and adding lower body muscle alone will make him much more explosive .

It's not that I don't like him, I'm just not as high on him. I always said that you don't change your mind based on a player's 19 year old season. Thos who didn't like Erne in his draft don't like him more now because he just had a great season. Besides, people already write Gauthier off because he has no offensive potential. He basically has the same numbers as McCarron with Oshawa in a similar role if not more defensive.

But other, arguably "less talented" players carve out their niche on bottom 6s because the tools they possess are conducive to defensive responsibility from the get-go. The list doesn't start and end with DLR. You could extend that to Bournival, White, heck, Weise and Eller, etc. McCarron reads the play well, so that will help. I'm not even saying his skating WILL hold him back. Someone correctly identified a crucial weakness in his skillset, though, and if anything gets in the way of a quick ascension to the NHL for McCarron, I could see it being the acceleration/foot speed leading to defensive struggles - not speed (or lack thereof) leading to struggles offensively.

I've been impressed with the progress his defensive game has made and how quickly he has adapted to taking face-offs. Can't wait to see how he does next year.
