Porter claimed by Wild. This organization is ****ed.

Not sure if sarcasm. But decided not true. Hexy obviously knew losing Porter was a possibility and needed a reason to keep Vinny off the ice. Being that he's the only extra forward it makes sense. Now the task will be making space for Manning. Philly now has an extra contract space to play with.

How many teams are looking for checking line players at this time, and how many on that list can't fill that roster spot internally with a prospect?

Waivers is always a gamble but I don't blame Hextall for taking the risk of Porter getting claimed.
If he really looked that good in camp, they just could have waived VV instead.

Porter is 31, VV is 28.
Think that explains the decision.
Porter would have been nice depth in Allentown, but not someone you'd expect to be around in 2-3 years.

Porter being claimed, file that under 'no big deal'

Energy 4th liner, nothing more. I'd rather have Cousins up on the team anyway to replace him (if ever needed).

I'd prefer Porter over Vinny but that's not possible. I like VV better anyway. Would have been nice to have him as a reserve but oh well

I suspect so would Hextall and Hakstol.
Life sucks and then you die.
At least until you've reduced the cap hit from the buyout to a manageable level.

It's manageable, though. This is a 22 man roster with five guys on ELCs. Leier and Morin could easily be replaced by cheap veterans if they need to stay in the AHL. If things get tight you could also buy out Umberger and free up an extra $3m in space.

Giroux ~ 8.275
Voracek ~ 8.25
Streit ~ 5.25
MacDonald ~ 5
Umberger ~ 4.6

Lecavalier buyout ~ 2.916

Provorov ~ 0.925

Morin ~ 0.863
Laughton ~ 0.863

Very true, if you aren't going to play him, I guess just cut him lose

Buy-out of Lecavalier is still nasty next year:

2.9
2.4
900
900

Depends how you look at it really... in my mind he is not a useful roster member and the team is better without him, so I see it as:

+1.58m cap space
+2.08m cap space
-916k cap space
-916k cap space

We do not even need to 'replace' him on the roster either so there is no extra cost to that.

I mean, he is our 14th forward really... and if we keep him he is dead space anyway really...

No one likes having dead money on the cap, but needs must when the devil vomits into your kettle.

Keep in mind that Streit most likely won't be here, which frees up an additional 5.25 mil

If Vinny was getting $3m in salary next season instead of a $500K bonus and $2.5m in salary, his buyout cap hits would be a lot neater.

16-17: $2.5m
17-18: $2.5m
18-19: $1m
19-20. $1m

This is because signing bonuses cannot be bought out. This make the Clarkson contract even worse than you might have thought.

True, but I like to use whatever contracts are still on the books to show a worst case scenario.

If Streit is traded I think it will be so they can extend Medvedev at about $4.5m.

That won't help the cap situation much at all since you only get $925K of cap relief.

MacDonald can be sent to the minors, Vinny can't. What happens if they waive him? They just pay him to be on another team or unemployed?
