Why would that matter? Isn't the entire move west about more practice time, easier call ups and saving dollars under the CAP.

I know you're just going for the stinger, but it matters because California isn't exactly hockey mad. It's a bandwagon hockey state in general. Now that the Samuelis own the team they're obviously going to prefer that it not bleed money, and that means a good record is preferable.

It probably doesn't matter to the Ducks. I was just making an observation from the fan side. The Norfolk thread is over there for you to berate other fans for stealing your team.

On the downside... the other four teams who are moving West are ALL in playoff position right now, where the NorAds are worst in the East and 2nd-worst in the AHL. Given that they'll be playing a LARGE portion of their games against the four playoff-position teams in their division... this doesn't bode well for the Gulls' place in the standings this first season.

Even more reason for the local management team to market the _frak_ out of the whole night's experience as entertainment. The WCHL team had dominant records as a reason to bring people to the arena -- this team doesn't look like it'll have that luxury.

Things change dramatically year to year. Teams get an influx of new players, old players graduate from good teams, etc. I think the proximity of being so close will help because then you can lean on guys like Scott Niedermayer and Todd Marchant to help out.

Don't forget Manson, he's going to need help as well.

I didn`t. After seeing what he did this season, i think he will be able to learn from Scotty a lot in Anaheim too ;)
But yeah, very likely he still spends some time in SD too.

And someone mentioned Marchant - what exactly he does? Isn`t he more of a guy that watches and advises juniors/NCAA players? I might be totally wrong but i never really understood his role now. He`s a great character that`s for sure.

He's director of player development. He works with our prospects. He's on the ice a lot in camp, especially the rookie camp. With the Gulls just down the road I imagine he'll be very hands on with the team.

Marchant works closely with Cogs and Silfverberg on their shooting techniques. :sarcasm:

I know his title involves player development, and he has a prominent role with the kids at rookie camp, but I've wondered the same thing, what does he really do with his time working for the Ducks?

The JoeMan mentioned this in passing, but I thought it bore highlighting:

ANAHEIM DUCKS TO HOLD “SAN DIEGO HOCKEYFEST†ON FEB. 22
The Free Event Will Take Place at Valley View Casino Center from Noon – 3 p.m.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the club will hold a “San Diego HockeyFest†at Valley View Casino Center from noon – 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22 to celebrate the return of professional hockey to San Diego. Earlier today, the Ducks announced the purchase and relocation of their American Hockey League (AHL) club from Norfolk, Va., to San Diego, Calif. The club will play home games at Valley View Casino Center beginning this fall at the start of 2015-16 AHL regular season.

The free event will include the official unveiling of the AHL club’s name and logo, along with a full “Hockey Spot†experience that takes place prior to Ducks Sunday home games at Honda Center.

Fans who sign up for full season ticket plans will also have the opportunity to view and select their seats at the event. Priority will be given to fans based on the order of deposits made through the club’s website (below). Merchandise stands featuring items for purchase with the club’s name and logo will also be open.

I'm assuming it's still too early, but has any info on ticket prices (individual or season) been released?

Not that I've been able to find -- $100 deposits can be made through the website, but no indications of how much of the full cost that can be expected to be. At least yet.

He visits the kids. He goes around the country and keeps tabs, offers advice, monitors progress on and off the ice. He generally projects the team's influence in physical form. He reports back to the scouts and the gm.

Ah, thanks. That's just another good reason to have our kids in SD, less travel and more quality time with T-Bone.

What just restating the reason the left coast teams wanted their AHL teams closer. Didn't realize the crew out there was so sensitive. Just a few days ago it was "sorry, sucks to be you, hey you are getting echl" expected you'all to be tougher.

My girlfriend lives in SD and I always complain about there being no hockey. She finally wins an argument.

Anyone else going to the event on the 22nd? I'll be there for sure.

If anyone's overly sensitive, it's you.

Monitors their diets, too. Well, gives them tips anyway. Actually with the Dulls just down the road, that should give him more time to hit up all the far flung draftees, maybe head to Europe more than once a year.

I kind of always liked the idea/sound of naming our affiliate ''Mallards'' but i understand it won`t happen in SD.

So if we rename our team back to the Mighty Ducks. The San Diego team aren't the full Ducks, so they can be the Hemi-Ducks.

Then it will be the HD of SD. The will be the affiliate of the MD in the newly renamed PhD of the AHL.
