He's as good as gone, but even with that expectation, hopefully having him in the lineup for a while will help show the team how important it is to add another legit scorer. Getting some consistent scoring balance should be a priority this summer. As the various cap projections show, we can afford it. Vanek might not be the guy, but the Habs need to fill that spot somehow.

In a perfect world:

  • Bergevin sign Subban & Vanek Before the deadline. Trade rights or Extend Markov to a 1-2 year contract (let say he doesn't)
  • Get rid of Bourque for wathever
  • Doesn't resign Parros, Bouillon, Gionta.
  • If Murray has good playoff, offer him 1y deal.
  • Chose between White & Weise

Subban 8 000 000
Vanek 8 500 000
Weise 950 000
Murray 1 500 000
Eller 2 000 000

I used a 68m max salary cap. There's 2 gap to fil (position on the ice might not be respected in my lineup)

If the money's there, he'll stay. With cap going up and the fact he seemed thrilled to be coming here, chances are good.

Not signing in Buffalo and Long Island is much different than turning down mega bucks from Montreal after he feels the love of the Bell Centre faithful.

While there is an extremely good chance he'll go to FA, there is still a chance he signs in Montreal. I have faith!

Some players just look right in certain jerseys and I have a feeling Vanek is going to be one of those in the CH. I also think MSL looked right in the blueshirt last night.

Do not want Roy. Would much rather have Plekanec and Eller move up and get a true 4th line Centre.

Galchenyuk has to play center next year. I just don't see the excuse of not playing him there. It'll be his 3rd year in the league. Enough with the protection.

Realistically I believe it will be:

Subban 7.4M$ (even though he deserves no more than 7M$.)
Vanek 8.5-8.7M$

I can't see Subban getting 8+M$, not with Karlsson making 6.5M$ and Doughty 7M$.

Doughty & Karlsson didn't sign a bridge contract and got their long term deal right off their ELC. Cap situation and CBA weren't the same.

Cap will most probably be higher (I'd say 70 or 71M). 68M is the lowest estimate.

With your roster, there's almost 6M left in cap space. Means that there's still 9M left to spend there. Give 6M to Markov and that's plenty of room to fill it out. We could even get Jagr next year with some minor wiggling.

What happens next? Cap goes up like crazy because of the TV deal. Briere is off etc.

I really don't get why people are so worried about the cap. Beside the Briere signing, I think Bergevin (with the help of his team, most probably), managed the cap very well so far. Not all teams could afford to add a 6-7M dollar guy at the deadline.
