Almost there with 23 players... you'd have to tweak some things or dump some guys, but it's pretty small-scale effort required, you'd find a way if you could actually get Vanek to sign... :dunno:

We can fit him pretty easily by not re-signing Gionta. This requires Vanek wanting to re-sign though.

We'd have to find a way to unload either Bourque or Brière. We could also trade Moen or Prust and let Bournival fill the void in the bottom-6.

Buyout Briere or Bourque; Whoever you don't buy out see if you can get at least a 6th round pick for him.

Don't re-sign Gionta.

Git er done!

Galchenyuk - Plekanec - Vanek
Pacioretty - Desharnais - Gallagher
Bournival - Eller - Prust
Moen - White - Weise

With solid wingers for Plekanec, you can keep DD as Montreal will actually have a #1 line centred by Pleknaec.

Get rid of Briere & Bourque via buyout / trade for a very very low draft pick.
Don't resign Parros and Gionta.

Give Subban the C.

So, can any of our cap experts devise a way to make Vanek fit under the cap next year assuming a ~7.5 mil per offer ?

Fitting Vanek is not the issue even at 8m. It's getting him to sign in the first place that's the big question mark.

Worst case scenario you use a regular buy-out on Briere which saves nearly 3m.

Exactly. You've just rendered this thread superfluous.

Don't you have to use a 35+ buyout option? I think buying out Bourque and trading DD is the way to go.

Anaheim has 2 forwards making over 8 million each and so does Pittsburgh. No reason we can't sign him, especially with some younger plyaers ready to make the jump with their low cap hits.

You don't have to buy anyone out either. Bourque can Gorges could most likely be dealt at the draft with relative ease to create space and we have players to fill their roles.

Unload Bourque or Briere, hopefully Bourque since he's got an extra year and then trade Moen.. I love the guy and he's been great this year but we have an abundance of bottom six guys and his value is as high as its been in a while.

Can the Habs keep Vanek?

No doubt about it, MT pulled off some voodoo today and landed us a real top line forward, finally! But can we get him to sign here come summer? What do you think? Realistically and not from a fans point of view.

Can we absolutely. Will we that's a different story. Lots of things will have to go right from now to July in order of him wanting to stick around

Yea I agree. I think if he plays well here and we go on a deep run it would elevate him to star status in Montreal and it would make it pretty tempting to stick around!
