After Eakins got hired as Coach for the Oil. Nelson felt like he got betrayed by Oilers. In his view he could have been good fit to coach this team. He got plenty of chances to be assistant coach with other teams and he turned it down. He said if he ever wants to be in NHL he wants to be a HC not an assistant coach.

Then you might wonder why he re-signed with OKC again this year.... well Todd is well settled in OKC, he lives in Edmond with beautiful family with nice barn and horses. He is well respected in community. I am not saying he is in the category of Stoops but he is well recognized in the small hockey community here in OKC.

Again he felt that MacTavish never had a conversation with him regarding HC job in Edmonton.

When you fall in love you fall in love. MacT fell madly in love with Eakins and forgot all about any kind of interviewing process or taking his job seriously.

Actually if(when) Eakins gets canned, Nelson does make the most sense, especially if your wanting a more straight forward transition.

In the coaching staff he has a former assistant in Thomson here, and has worked under Ramsey in Atlanta (and actually had that team do decent). In terms of personal, most all of the key players have spent time with him, so there should already be a working relationship and understanding there.

Considering he's the only coach that's been able to consistently get his players to buy into his system year after year, despite the issues that exist within this organization, that should earn him a chance as an intern.

I'm skeptical if he's a guy that could ever lead this team to a cup, but considering that goal is so (and I mean sssssssssssssooooooooooooooooooooo) far off, he still would be a step in the right direction, and that's what this team needs right now.

This. Three hours interviewing Eakins in a hotel room, an all logic and reason went out the window.

Eakins record was mainly based on his teams goaltending. They were routinely outshot and outplayed, especially in the playoffs, but they rode a hot 'tender.

Nelson is doing a great job in OKC and the team is really on a roll. However, I would like to see some offensive output from guys not named Hunt, Ford, Ryan Hamilton, Williams or Miller. In other words, guys that may actually have a chance to make our team in the future.

The red flag should be that whatever Nelson is teaching these guys obviously doesn't work very well in the NHL, because despite OKC's success those players seldom contribute when they're called up.

Should immediately make you think that his ceiling is AHL coach when everybody he coaches tops out at AHL player.

I don't know about that, Klefbom is looking very good, Aulie rebounded after playing for him, Pitlick is showing alright as is Pinizzotto.

Klefbom and Aulie were already playing pro hockey before they got to Nelson. Pitlick seems like he would be a solid third/fourth line energy guy if he could stay healthy, although he was drafted just outside the first round and projected as a second liner.

In terms of actual development I think Nelson has.... Marincin to his name.

I think our prospects just suck for the most part. Todd Nelson is doing a fantastic job with what he has.

Klefbom played pro in Sweden like Paajarvi and Lander before him. If Nelson gets crapped on for not developing a guy like Lander he should get credit for developing Klefbom.

How long before Hunt is back up here i wonder, he's just tearing it up down there. (I am not suggesting I want Hunt up here. )

I wouldn't mind Nelson as an assistant in Edmonton next year, but no more rookie/junior coaches. Not with this group, no way.

Offensively he is, defensively he is making lots of mistakes. Unfortunately for OKC Davidson is not there to cover for him anymore, Davidson IMO has been great since coming back.

After going down 2-0 in the second, the Barons come back for a 3-2 regulation win. Lander with assists on all three goals and the first star. I know he hasn't shown well in the NHL, but gorammit he's done everything you could ask for in the AHL. With Draisaitl proving completely ineffective, I say send Leon to team Germany and give Lander his call-up. The kid has earned it.

He assisted on all 5 Barons goals this weekend. He's getting better every game, post game interviews Pakarinen & Ford gave glowing reviews of him. He's definitely been a good soldier in the AHL.

A couple other thing of note - Brossoit has won his last 6 starts. We are seeing him becoming more confident and comfortable at this level. He's been steady. Marincin had a rough weekend trying to do too much. Last night and tonight him & Gernat both costed the team goals on turnovers that led to breakaways.

Oh, and apparently Brad Hunt was seen leaving the Cox Center with his gear & sticks in tow. Sounds like you all got your wish wanting Hunt & Schultz pairing reincarnated. :sarcasm:

I'm saying this now and I've said it before, Todd Nelson needs to be given a shot to coach the big club in a interim basis! If anything, it's moving one step closer in identifying what/who are the problems and what are the solutions.

Well I was hoping that this would happen a lot earlier and as much as I hate Lowe MacT and company, this was the most sensible decision the Oilers have made all season. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this all pans out! I think Todd Nelson will get the guys playing a lot better!

Any idea why Bachman was pulled tonight?

Seems like an injury based on the time and circumstances, but neither team's recap mentions it. Each team had a roughing minor at the time of the departure, which is suggestive.

They're preaching hard accountability in OKC. Oh so you let in one goal on 30 shots, well we can't have that, you are getting pulled, one goal is one too much.
