Bob Stauffer made a statement yesterday's show where he said that Moroz is not getting enough ice time, where as Matt Ford is getting more ice time, therefore he is blaming Todd Nelson for the development of prospects. In other words he is blaming Todd Nelson about Moroz's development.

I totally disagree on this statement. Matt Ford and Moroz played same amount of games which is 16, where Ford has 12 points and Mitch has 1 pt. Yea ice times are the factor, but if a player is undisciplined both on and off the ice, why would you give him that much ice time? After all Todd's job is have a winning team and be accountable for the player's actions. Maybe Moroz needs to have some discipline such as not going to playhouse club the night before the game night.

Yeah it's kind of odd to complain when Todd Nelson wants his players to earn their ice time when there are also complaints about the lack of accountability within the organization.

Moroz is a huge long shot and if he can't grab ice time from Matt Ford it's not Todd Nelson holding him back, it's Mitch Moroz holding himself back.

I've never understood the notion that a player needs to play 15-20 minutes a night to develop, sure you can't go 3-4 seasons getting 8 minutes a night but having to work for your ice time while working hard in practice to improve won't kill anyones career, it might actually be beneficial. I don't think Yakimov lack of ice time last season has hurt his future career at all, he learned to play the game the right way, that you need to work your way up.

And if Moroz needs a few games with big minutes but can't grab them in OKC you can always send him down to Bakersfield.

How many OKC games has Stauffer watched I'm guessing 0, Moroz has been afforded more opportunity then he has deserved and has gotten opportunities on the powerplay despite being so much worse offensively then pretty much any player on the team.

A more fair criticism of Nelson is he seems to turn players into good AHL players, he is good at teaching them how to play the game smarter and utilize their strengths to cut out a niche for themselves and be successful in that league, but he doesn't seem to do a lot in terms of skill development such as improved skating or improving their shots.

It was a bit funny watching OKC early in the year they were pretty much just as porous defensively as we were playing the same system as us and were continually losing late game leads. They have been doing a lot better of late of tightening things down, maybe Eakins should call up Nelson for some advice on adjustments to make. That said I think the group in the AHL is much more commited, they are buying in more, and the leadership group they have at the AHL level is really good and I can't think of many players down there who aren't willing to put in the extra time and effort to improve.

We should hire a skill coach for our AHL/ECHL level teams, let the head coach do his thing and have them work on developing skills that are necessary for the big leagues such as improved stick handling, puck protection skills, shooting, etc.. It's actually one position I would be comfortable hiring one of the Old Boy's club members as we have actually had a lot of really skilled players over the years, I think the good ones though have too big of an ego to take a job like that. Someone like Paul Coffey, Kent Nilsson, or Craig Simpson would probably be solid in a role like that, though as I said before I can't see them taking a job like that. All of our old glory day players want seats up top where they are more hands on in managing this club, when for most of them that is outside of their wheelhouse.

Frankly I'm SHOCKED that a guy who was never a big scorer against 16-20 year olds until he was 20 is struggling at the next level. SHOCKED

Moroz has gotten powerplay time and has had his opportunities of playing on the 2nd line with Lander and Pakarinen, he has yet to prove that he's worthy of such. In all honesty, Moroz is lucky to be given the amount of games he has. If it wasn't for Nelson rotating EVERY forward on the roster (even leading scorer takes his turn to sit) and was instead based on playing the best guys then Moroz would be in pb regularly IMO, he has been easily the least effective player on the Barons roster to date.

He did have a great fight last night, so finally we are seeing his physical side. Maybe with Kessy being out for possibly long term Moroz will step his physicality up to make up for his absence.

So basically Stauffer talking out of his ass. Surprising :sarcasm:

Good post. I listened to Bob's show yesterday, and as soon as I saw this thread I immediately thought about the Moroz comment.

Also agree with OiledUp's comment about accountability. Stauffer being a media puppet really gets in the way of logic. It's funny, because a little while ago (right around the CHI game), he seemed to be getting fed up and started venting about players like Hall, Eberle and Schultz. I'm guessing he got a phone call reminding him what his job is, because he was right back to selling the "process" a couple days later.

But to the topic at hand, I think it's great. I'd almost rather have Marincin and Klefbom both down there playing big minutes for a winning team. If we clean house at the end of the year and grab a good coach (Babcock hopefully), I wonder if Nelson would take an assistant's role or if he only has NHL head coach in his sights?

I really wouldn't be so sure about that. Eakins may be a bad coach but this team is still toxic at its core and it would take a massive improvement for them to get out of the bottom 8.

Sure it appears that way now that we are out of the playoffs 8 weeks in but a coach with half a brain who made only common sense toi, roster, and strategic decisions would have won us a few more games to start the season and the locker room would have a completely different dynamic to it.

But we instead had Eakins who robs us of an opportunity to win night after night.

Moroz is garbage. He should have been selected in the 3rd round at the earliest. Might as well blame Nelson for Lander, Pitlick, Hamilton and Musil not living up to their potential as well...

So if Stauffer is the mouthpiece, management is dictating toi and Nelson is frustrating them. Nelson should ignore them and consider his team and reputation. How can anyone support Eakins and criticize Nelson. A poster here noted, Nelson did not have as much success with Hall, Eberle, Schultz and Nuge in the lineup.

Swap coaches for a while... who cares what Eakins thinks... he still gets his salary so what's it matter.

Eakins would get perspective on how the AHL prospects are playing with heart and Nelson would possibly instill some of that heart and emotion they are playing with down there in OKC.

I think it would be a legitimate bold move... if players can be sent up and down... why not coaches?

Seems like Nelson is performing well and we know Eakins is doing poorly and getting nothing out of this squad... so why not make that move?

What's the worst that happens... Oilers continue to lose? Season is lost anyway long ago so try something different and see if it can make a positive change.

If MacT and everyone else is preaching accountability... it makes sense to make that coaching swap.

It's too sensible and logical so of course it won't be done.

Theres no point when end game is McDavid

Eakins is doing just fine:sarcasm:

Nelson likes hard working two way players who work for their wins. Eberle, Hall and Schultz are offense only players who are used to their talent carrying them.

Give Nelson a full year with them without management dictating who gets what time and he could probably turn them into good two way players.

I love what Nelson has done, before he came along we were lost. However I wouldn't be so quick to assume he'd do well in the NHL, Eakins was a pretty good AHL coach too.

He sure knows how to motivate players but then again it's a different world in the AHL. Remember how the Barons actually improved after the lockout? Schultz and the current Oilers top line scored points but they didn't play a complete game.

Good to see the Barons winning though. I don't buy the idea that they should pump up draft picks minutes, having a winning culture and earning your spot is far more important. If our scouts are worth anything there would be draft picks playing key roles based on merit. If Hall and Eberle had to earn their ice time in 2010 we wouldn't be last place in 2014.

Actually, Eakins was nothing special as a coach in the AHL outside of one season where he went deep in the playoffs. Actually, I think he only ever made the playoffs once as a coach.

Nelson had much less to work with then Eakins did and makes the playoffs I think, the last 3 at least.

The team still sucks. The defense is still lousy, the forwards are floaters and the goaltending is average at best.

Yeah Nelsons AHL record is at the very least similar if not better compared to Eakins with worse rosters. There was talk of Nelson being pissed off after he was snubbed for the head coach job and imo he had every right to be. Speaks volumes about his character and loyalty that he stayed on. If they fire Eakins during the season they need to give him a shot as the interim coach. And if they're changing coaches during the summer he needs to be in the running.
I actually liked the idea in this thread to try and convience him to take an assistant coach job behind a known top coach like Mike Babcock. Sadly I think Babcock is probably as big of a pipe dream as getting Malking this off season. Unless Babcock's looking for one hell of a challenge.

I think being an assistant to someone like Babcock is the only way to get Nelson to take an assistant job since that job seems to be a great way to get an HC gig.

I don't think Nelson wants anything to do with being an assistant coach in the NHL. Yeah, maybe he'd jump on board if Babcock was running the show but lets be honest... Babcock isn't coming to Edmonton.

I'm saying this now and I've said it before, Todd Nelson needs to be given a shot to coach the big club in a interim basis! If anything, it's moving one step closer in identifying what/who are the problems and what are the solutions.

Giving another rookie head coach the reins just seems so Oilers.

Keep in mind that they actually weren't that good when Hall/Eberle/RNH/Schultz were down there.

What's the worst that could happen. The season is already a write off. Worst case, we finish with a high draft pick and we have a better idea which of the core pieces should be shipped out!

I would prefer to bring in an experienced coach so he can set things up for next year.

Yet the team got better after they left. Couldn't that be an indictment of Hall/Eberle/RNH/Schultz in themselves?

After Eakins got hired as Coach for the Oil. Nelson felt like he got betrayed by Oilers. In his view he could have been good fit to coach this team. He got plenty of chances to be assistant coach with other teams and he turned it down. He said if he ever wants to be in NHL he wants to be a HC not an assistant coach.

Then you might wonder why he re-signed with OKC again this year.... well Todd is well settled in OKC, he lives in Edmond with beautiful family with nice barn and horses. He is well respected in community. I am not saying he is in the category of Stoops but he is well recognized in the small hockey community here in OKC.

Again he felt that MacTavish never had a conversation with him regarding HC job in Edmonton.
