Would love Bickell here! Loved him when he played for the 67's. Have loved him ever since! Has size, has heart and scores goals from the dirty areas! Played hurt this post season and was one of the most valuable players to the cup winners! Te guy has been a playoff performer for a dangerous team and I think could definately help the Sens out especially come playoff time in the future!

I'm assuming that once the Briere buyout becomes official, he will immediately be a ufa? Philly won't own his rights anymore, so I'm guessing he will be free to sign with any team?

Anyone able to confirm this?

I agree and I'm certain that if Bickell reaches free agency we'll be in on the bidding. Having said that I really think the Hawks are going to find a way to re-sign him

I am almost 100% certain that all bought out players become UFA's on the first day of free agency.

From the Jun 26 pc that the Sens posted on their webpage, BM made this interesting comment:

"We're not at the stage where we were a few years ago where we just went and got a couple of veterans because we had to get a couple of veterans. I think we're at a stage where we have to be somewhat selective. And I'm going to try to be that way with our staff. [A player] that can come in and play and contribute. Not just fill a spot, not just be there because he's a veteran hockey player [who's] been around. A guy that can come in and play in a definite role on this hockey team and contribute in that role"

That suggests to me that they are looking for better quality UFAs than the Lundins and Lattendresses of the world. Perhaps, even a specialist.

It can be a little misleading looking at the operating income for just one year as player contracts can be back loaded, signing bonuses can also throw things off. Looking at the data on the link, the operating income quoted was for 2010 which coincided with the highest we had paid in player expenses in the 9 years they have listed (60 mil), I'm not sure if Heatley's bonus was include in that or the 2009 numbers. If you look at the chart showing the last nine years of operating income, you can see it fluctuates year to year, but we actually come out positive. That said, while 2 years in pretty deep negatives is discouraging, our player salaries the 2 year following the last data in the link were significantly lower (about 7 mil less), so I doubt we are lossing money to that extent now.

The other thing to take into account is that by owning the arena with a primary tenant (the sens) many additional incomes are available not included in these numbers.

Agreed and while some years show a net positive Operating Income, it is Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Those charts do not reflect profit.

So it makes it almost impossible to know what the profit or loss picture really is, but I can pretty much assure you looking at the Forbes numbers Melnyk isn't making a fortune from the Sens operation, he is not making much if anything.

In terms of the arena and its potential to make additional monies, this becomes a matter much more complicated IMO.

There is little doubt in my mind Melnyk wouldn't have bought the arena without the team or vice versa. So there is a logical connection that any revenue generated from the arena, other than the anchor tenant (Senators), should be added to the balance sheet from hockey operations before stating Melnyk is making or losing money.

Yet Melnyk invested $92M in the Senators and another $38M-$58M in the arena. He then formed Ottawa Sports and Entertainment and decided these two investments were going to be treated as separate entities, as they were previously. So for us the fans to think his two businesses should be combined using one to offset the cost of the other really isn't appropriate, even if understandable.

The main issue I have with adding in the Entertainment business is the financials are not available, so it is nothing but assumption to suggest the total operation is making or losing money when we really have no way of knowing.

BTW my assumption is he is making money, just no idea how much.

All I have to say is that Im just gonna start making a list of everyone that is doubting / trying to trade Cowen in every proposal.

The way he developed in juniors makes me believe he still has #1 potential (if you consider Searbrook a #1 in a good offensive year)

That has all changed due to the lockout though I believe.

While I am not suggesting to ship Condra or Conacher anywhere, I would suggest the Sens scouts felt Conacher was worth more than a second round pick in this year's draft.

However IMO that doesn't preclude Murray from using that asset (Conacher) to improve the team if possible, it is what he is paid to do.

Fair enough, but if you feel scouts think of Conacher as more than a 2nd, why would we want to package him with Condra for an early 2nd (as Aragorn suggested)?

Not sure why Aragorn would want to. It's not like sens have said anything about moving Conacher.

Aragorn just hates small players

Don't ever listen to him when it comes to smaller players

All depending on the player that might be available in that spot. For example if a guy like Hartman were to slide into the second round I would give up a Conacher to get Hartman.

Compliance buyout period technically begins at 11 p.m. ET tonight - 48 hrs after Cup final - but buyouts cannot proceed w/o waivers first.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
So tomorrow's waivers at 12 noon will be first time buyout candidates can go on unconditional ($100) waivers. Once clear, can be bought out.

I wonder if Briere will even make it through waivers.

briere has an NMC and therefore doesnt have to be waived if he doesnt want to be. Same goes for Bryzgalov. That's why the flyers were able to essentially announce the buyouts before the buyout period.

Probably. Most teams wouldn't want him at his current contract.

Would you guys be interested in drafting Nichushkin? I know he's Russian and some of you may not be cool about that fact but they aren't all the same... big power forward with quick stride and awesome agility, looks a bit like a young Malkin, I'd give my left nut to have him here, you? what would you give ?

Not my left nut.

And I'm not really entertaining the thought of him here because we're not going to be drafting him.

That has all changed due to the lockout though I believe.

That information is directly from the new CBA and from what I have read in other reports appears to be accurate for this season.

48 hours after the last game of the SCF is 11:00 tonight, and that is when buyouts process starts this year.
