Honest question after reading the Sanguinetti thread. If Pitkanen is truly back this weekend, who sits?

Jamie McBain has played some fairly uninspired hockey the past few games despite it not showing up on the scoresheet. He continues to pick up + ratings in plays that he's not incredibly involved in, but his ice time has been on a steady decline. The last five games he has probably averaged about 14 or 15 minutes a game. I would probably sit him for a game or two and have him come back into the lineup strong when Sanguinetti falters, if he does. I think those two are in a much bigger dog fight than people on this board would believe and McBain has the league wide reputation to be a tradable asset to bolster out lineup in other places.

With that said, it probably won't happen. The scratch might be Sanguinetti but you need to carry 7 anyways especially with this group that tends to have persistent small injuries.

Personally, I'd alternate Sangs and Corvo unless one of them really blows up.

Man, I really can't see Corvo coming out with the minutes he's getting and the way he has responded to his early season slump. He has been eating up the minutes that McBain has been dropping. Right now I truly believe it's a dog fight between McBain and Sanguinetti for the role of moderately soft bottom pairing puck mover.

I wouldn't be so sure about that Vagrant. Before Pitkanen got hurt, Muller was alternating between Sanguinetti, McBain and Corvo as the healthy scratch so I could see McBain being in the mix now (particularly with the amount they've put on Corvo's plate recently)

Totally agree... Corvo shouldn't be coming out of the lineup having played the way he has recently. Until he gives Kirk a reason, I don't see why you pull him for playing some of his more inspired hockey of late.

I don't see why you pull out Sanguinetti either, but somebody has to go.

Personally I don't see McBain making anywhere near the kind of defensive mistakes that Corvo made with 2:23 left in last night's game. To me, those guys are basically interchangeable at any given time, the main difference being Corvo's usual risk/reward dynamic.

Of course, if Muller's not going to use McBain on the power play he may as well just scratch the guy. It doesn't make sense to have him out there skating third-pairing minutes with another offensive defenseman, but not getting PP minutes.

I think who gets scratched depends on what Lewis/Muller plan to do with the D pairings. If they are insistent in having Faulk play with Harrison and Corvo with Gleason, Sangs is going to be the odd man out. McBain and Pitkanen play to well together not to have that be the first option. If they are willing to mix things up, we are back to whoever sucks the most on a given day between Corvo, Sangs, and McBain. While overall Corvo has been MUCH better than anticipated, he cost the team at least 2 loser points being out to lunch on breakaways late in the game so to say he's completely removed himself from consideration is a stretch. As long as his overall game remains at the level it's at though, he's less likely than the other two.

I'm no lover of McBain, but my unprofessional opinion is that, if he's in the lineup with Pitkanen out, he's a better option on the point than either Brent or Faulk. I realize that Faulk might be the better choice if it's a PP with a 2-goal lead, but when you need to score a goal, I think McBain is the guy you want in that position.

Wonder if we could do what we were doing with Joslin sometime. Bump McBain up like the 4th line winger + PP usage. Bonus that he can drop back to D during the game if anyone goes down.

I'm not a big fan of this idea. It's probably well known that I am not the biggest McBain fan, but sitting him is not what is needed for this team. I've been an advocate of Sangs, but he is clearly the #7 guy, and he needs to sit when Pitkanen returns. Whether or not McBain is carried by Pitkanen or not (as I've intimated), the bottom line is that the two are very good together.

Pair Harrison and Faulk, Gleason and Corvo, Pitkanen and McBain, and I think you have a team that will compete in the playoffs. Will they go deep? Who knows...don't care. They don't need to in order to please me, they just have to get there. Once they're there, they will figure out what's needed to take the next step, and hopefully they'll take it, but there's no immediate need to create an absolute Cup winner *this* year.

If Corvo gets caught napping like he did on the GWG by the Caps last night, then he better sit just for the fact that a screw up like that cost us the game. It's not his fault we were in that situation but I haven't seen McBain or Sangs have such an egregious screw up at such a critical time.

That said, I think it's McBain that sits. Sangs and Corvo beat him out at the start of the season and both have been better than they were to start the season. All 3 have their occasional idiotic plays. I think while Sangs and McBain are the same type of d-man, Sangs will get the nod due to his skating, but I won't be surprised to see them rotate or one eventually traded.

On the way home from the game last night I was listening to the aftermath. A caller asked Forslund why we aren't using McBain on the PP but putting Harrison there. Forslund said that Muller will use guys who have rounded out their 5 on 5. Said that McBain is making mistakes 5 on 5 and Muller wants him to fix those issues before putting him on the PP.

If Joni is back, which I hear he is, I could see McBain out. Unless Sanguinetti is still ailing from that hit he took last night. I was actually surprised to see him come back and play after that.

It would not surprise me to see McBain moved TBH. His trade value isn't getting any higher, and I'm not sure how he fits into our plans going forward.

The stats in this article are kind of stunning: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/man-solved-alex-ovechkin-161323779--nhl.html

6 games played against Carolina with Muller as head coach. 0 goals, 2 assists, -4, 0 PPG, 0 PPA and only 1.66 shots per game. Then this:

That's wild.

Yeah, that article totally jinxed us last game. OV with multiple shots, a goal (on the PP) and an assist on the gamewinner (which could have very well been the gamewinner itself with any puckluck).

OV was playing like his old self last game. Doesn't bode well for the rest of the SE if he's found his game again.

For those who didn't realize what was going on, Nash is back up with the Canes.

This was nothing more than a chance to get him to play more hockey. If anything, I'm sure he loved it, he got out of a bag skate on Friday.

Never thought I'd have to say this, but boy do I hope Sanguinetti is ready to go Tuesday.
