Maybe this has already been discussed: But #9 to Columbus for 2 of their # 1's?
Could NJ get back the #14, and the #19? The #14 and the #23? The #19 and #23? Would Columbus be interested? Would any of yall be interested?
We'll see in a few hours where LA's pick ends up. Getting two of their 1sts is probably unlikely unless they absolutely love somebody that's available in our range. In 2007, St. Louis (current Columbus GM Jarmo Kekalainen was their head scout) wanted to trade up for Jakub Voracek. They offered #9 and #24 to Edmonton for #6 but were rebuffed.
I could see Columbus making an offer like that to Edmonton at #7 for somebody like Elias Lindholm. If Lindholm were to slip to #9, I would hope that we would just take him. There's a good chance that one of the D (Nurse/Ristolainen/Zadorov) would be the BPA at #14 and Columbus has pretty much stated an intention to load up on forwards.
Trading down for more picks is always dangerous. I'd only move down if I was confident in landing somebody in particular. I wouldn't trade down solely to add another first round pick.
The cautionary tale would be Anaheim in 2008. They traded #12 for #17 and #28 which seems like good value. They also were intending to draft Erik Karlsson. Ottawa then jumped up from #18 to #15 for Karlsson. Anaheim then drafted Jake Gardiner at #17. Later they traded #28 for #35 and #39. With those picks they ended up with Nicolas Deschamps and Eric O'Dell.
Naturally with hindsight, they should have just taken Karlsson at #12 and dealt with armchair GMs laughing about them "reaching." The extra picks sound great until you have to put names there on the spot. Ie, last year most people were lambasting Columbus for not trading #2 to the Islanders for a bevy of picks. But when I asked those people to name who they would have chosen, most couldn't come up with anybody.
If I'm trading down, I still think Phoenix (#12) or Winnipeg (#13) are our best bets. Still would reasonably guarantee that you'd get a Domi/Shinkaruk/Horvat.
There'd be some interesting names in the 20s, but moving down to #14 seems to put us out of range of the top forward prospects. Instead of Domi/Shinkaruk, we're probably talking Wennberg/Burakowsky/Mantha. Just seems like a tier drop there.
