I wonder if there is a chance of Foligno starting in Rochester. The left side has a lot of folks in the mix; Vanek, Ennis, Ott, Leino, Foligno, Larsson, Girgs, Adam, McCormick, Scott and Ellis. Center is pretty full as well: Hodgson, Ennis, Grigs, Larsson, Porter, McCormick and Ellis.

I'm not saying it will happen or that its even likely. But he may have a hell of a battle on his hands to stay up.

This crossed my mind too, because he is exempt from waivers and can easily go down. I agree with you that is not likely.

It certainly should be an option if he doesn't win the spot in training camp, but generally it seems that incumbents are given the benefit of the doubt.

Couple of points on that

1. That was certainly something Ruff did but with Rolston I'm not sure that will be the case.

2. Foligno really hasn't played enough in the NHL to be considered an incumbent IMO.

The perfection situation is his play leaves no doubt that he belongs in the NHL. Its nice to have the depth to put some heat on the younger guys.

All good points; I'm betting that Foligno considers himself an NHL'er at this point.

Well, Foligno ended the year centering the fourth line between Scott and Stafford, no? Meanwhile, Tropp ended 2011-12 at RW on a line with Vanek and Hodgson and then started 2012-13 at RW on a top Rochester line with Adam and Hodgson. I'd say it's certainly possible Foligno could get sent down if he doesn't bring it consistently in camp, especially since he's still on an ELC, and also because of the emergence of Flynn, the potential returns of Leino and Tropp, and the camp unpredictability of Armia, Girgensons and Larsson.

Tropp started in Rochester because of the lockout though. Using him as an example doesn't quite work.

Sending Foligno down wasn't an option I had ever considered (mostly because I figured he had too many GP for the waiver exemption, but I guess not). It should certainly be an option--he's got to prove he belongs, just like everyone else on the team.

I agree. Foligno, just like anyone else on the team should earn a spot. If a rookie out works him, the rookie should get the spot.

IMO the chance Foligno starts in Rochester is extremely low, less than 5%.

Maybe I should've included a break, as I meant that to read as a reminder of where in the lineup Foligno and Tropp were last contributing. Tropp also had the knee injury after just one game, so I reached a little further for his 11-12 linemates. My intent was not to indicate a precedent of "NHL-to-AHL demotion over a summer".

Anyway, with everyone healthy, I can't see Foligno in the top-9 unless the fizzling FES is given another shot. That leaves his options as: LW4, C4, scratch or Rochester; and I think it's safe to say no one sees much value in scratching him for any signifcant stretch, so if someone else scraps their way into the lineup via camp, I think Rochester is an option. However, I still think it's more than likely he'll start as LW4, but an acquisition or emergence can quickly change that is all I was really getting at, as his form wasn't the greatest last year.

I've had Foligno penciled in my mind as 4th line LW. There's the potential for lots of versatility with so many players in the mix, and he could be good/consistent enough to move up, or get scratched for Scott. Foligno-Larsson-Kaleta could be a real headache to play against, and maybe my favorite shift to watch if it happens.

I expect one of Larsson/Girgensons to make the team out of camp.

The defense should be...interesting...this year.

Still don't see it. There's just not room. I expect Hodgson to sign by opening night.

Vanek, Leino, Stafford, Ott, Ennis, Grigorenko, Kalets, Foligno, Scott, Flynn, Porter, Hodgson and McCormick.

That's 13 and they're not going to keep 14. McCormick is the question mark, but just going on Regier's comments, doesn't sound like he'll get waived.

But I do expect there to be plenty of opportunity for those guys to step up throughout the year. Competition in Rochester will be fun to watch this year.

I don't see McCormick making the team. Not sure why they would keep him around just not enough skill. Pretty sure him getting sent down and clearing waivers towards the end of last year was the end for him in a Buffalo uniform. He is fine to have as a leader in Rochester, I just don't see him as an NHL player.

That's what I think too, but I was just basing my comments off of what Regier said earlier this summer. He thinks McCormick will get claimed, I don't. So I could see him in Rochester. Even so, I would expect Tropp to be the guy to make the team in that case, not Larsson or Girgensons.

IMO those three are questionable to be on the roster to start the season. I could see Girgensons and/or Larsson nabbing a roster spot.

I think Grigorenko being gifted a spot is what has bothered me the most all off season.

I think McCormick makes the opening day roster on Porters' wing with Flynn/Scott on the other side. If he doesn't he will be traded..
