ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 9:54 Hedman (Thompson, Crombeen)
Goalie error - Peters - I don't think this needs to be explained...

3rd 11:38 Stamkos (Killorn, St. Louis)
-1 Eric Staal - Embarrassingly poor skating and positional effort, especially against one of the top lines in the NHL on a zone entry.
-1 Tlusty - Even if defense isn't exactly his job, he needs to have a little more common sense than to consciously choose NOT to check Stamkos closely in the slot on a rush. Again, this is embarrassingly bad stuff from a top line against another top line.

3rd 17:14 Killorn (St. Louis)
-1 Sekera - As bad as Staal and Tlusty were on that last goal, Sekera one-upped them on this one. This might be the worst defensive display we've seen in years, including doozies from Sangs, MAB, etc.

1st 8:26 Hagelin (Pouliot, Richards)
Goalie Error - Peters - Slightly less ridiculous than his last goof-up, but an NHL goalie has to stop a backhand from the hashmarks. Particularly when the defense has the shooter double-teamed.

2nd 8:16 Hagelin (Pyatt, McDonagh)
-1 Sekera - Hockey 101, the defensemen on the penalty box side needs to cover the guy coming out of the box.

3rd 9:09 Stepan (Zuccarello, Kreider)
-1 Ruutu - This puck should have been out easy. Ruutu had three outlets on this play, and put all three of those players in a bad position by making an unnecessary hit on Kreider.

3rd 14:37 Stepan (Zuccarello, Kreider)
Goalie Error - Peters - Another case of a ludicrously soft goal that was simply put on net and should have been covered with positioning alone.

Might want to change the heading info for this game. That is, unless Tampa and the Rangers changed rosters overnight. :sarcasm:

ES GOALS FOR

1st 6:39 Dvorak (Hainsey)
+1 Dvorak - Aside from putting the puck in the net, he got the whole sequence started with a vigorous forecheck.
+1 Hainsey - It would seem that our defensemen score more points on plays like this -- just putting the puck on net quickly -- than any other way.
+1 Malhotra - This is extremely subtle, maybe even borderline for a "plus", but that puck probably never gets around to Hainsey if Malhotra isn't in proper position on the wall. Even though he didn't seem to get a piece of it, he drew off the Islander defender just enough to make a play possible for his point man.

ES GOALS FOR

1st 4:53 Murphy (Bowman, Peters)
Fluke play, the harmless original shot may not have even been on net. The goal was a result of a freak deflection and lack of focus by Harding.

2nd 7:14 Tlusty (Semin, Bellemore)
+1 Tlusty - Kind of a tough goal to evaluate because it's also the result of a favorable bounce. I'm willing to give Tlusty credit here because he benefited from staying in proper position throughout the sequence and getting into the "dirty" area of the slot.
+1 Malhotra - The most impressive part of this whole sequence is that Malhotra was 1-on-5 on the low boards at one point, and managed to maintain possession for the Canes by simply bird-dogging the puck up the halfboards. That's damned impressive and puts some of our higher-paid players to shame.
- I feel like Semin, Bellemore and Hainsey were all basically a neutral charge on this one, mainly because the Wild really should have come out of the zone with possession. Again, a tough goal to evaluate.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 3:33 Pominville (Suter)
-1 Murphy - Just a lack of defensive sense here, failing to cover for his partner who is taking a shot. I can forgive Harrison not getting back, considering he was the shooter and still made it a footrace, but Murphy has no excuse.

2nd 11:22 Fontaine (Scandella, Spurgeon)
Result of an expiring PP, no changes.

Totals
+1 Malhotra
+1 Tlusty
-1 Murphy

ES GOALS FOR

1st 12:47 Jordan Staal (Gerbe, Dwyer)
+1 Dwyer - This play comes down to Dwyer's forecheck, which took two Avs to defend, and his subsequent steal right off the tape of the second guy.
+1 Gerbe - It pays to provide puck support; not a great shot but it got the job done.
+1 Jordan Staal - This is where it makes sense to have Jordan paired with Dwyer and Gerbe, coming in behind them to pick up the garbage rebounds and loose pucks.
+1 Murphy - Credit where it's due for a perfect dump-pass from his own zone to launch the forecheck.

2nd 0:26 Dwyer (Gerbe, Jordan Staal)
+1 Gerbe - One of the better assists we've seen this season.
+1 Dwyer - Thankfully his hands-of-stone didn't waste that beauty of a setup pass.

In complete and total seriousness, I'd say he has probably been the MVP since he's been on the team. Not because he's "the best" player, but because:

- he takes nearly every important faceoff, and wins them at a rate good for 2nd in the league
- he nearly ties Jordan for the PK time lead among forwards
- he is top-5 among our forwards in hits/game
- he blocks shots at the highest rate among all our forwards
- he has the second highest Relative Corsi on the team
- he has the second highest Relative Corsi Quality of Competition on the team
- he has the lowest offensive zone start % on the team
- he's scored an OT goal, which kept us out of a shootout that we'd inevitably have lost
- most importantly, he enabled us to roll four lines, which has been absolutely critical during this period of defensive-mindedness.

I don't expect this to keep up much longer; the guy hasn't played a full season in two years and conditioning is going to be a factor, not to mention the bounces will catch up with him eventually. But for the time that he's been here, yeah, he's improved this team tremendously.

It seems like Manny's line taking a lot of the D-zone starts has freed up Jordan's line to start more from the O-zone and neutral zone. Hopefully they can continue to produce offensively.

Oh I agree. I mentioned somewhere that having a 4th line that can be trusted to play in the last two minutes of the game is a big deal.

-1 Ruutu - Man oh man. You want to see some blown defensive coverage? Watch Ruutu on this play. Muller must have had a coronary.

2nd 11:36 Backes (Morrow, Bouwmeester)
-1 Semin - A lot of things went wrong here, but it begins with Semin drifting away from his assignment to just kind of stare blankly at Sobotka. If he stays home, even without doing much he is in a position to trap the play at the point.
-1 Sekera - Everyone looked pretty winded, but Sekera literally stood there and watched 4 seconds tick off the clock without marking anyone. Like Semin, if he simply reads and engages with the play the Blues have a much harder time scoring this goal.
-1 Eric Staal - Same phenomenon. Staal floats for 3 full seconds without taking a stride, while also failing to recognize Backes coming in on the weak side.
-1 Tlusty - The Backes cut is as much on Tlusty as on Staal. No reason he should be drifting away from his assignment without communicating.

3rd 6:20 Steen (Polak, Cole)
-1 Gleason - Between this and Ruutu, the Canes were really making some minor-hockey decisions in their transition game that night.

ES GOALS FOR

1st 19:55 Ruutu (Eric Staal, Bowman)
+1 Ruutu - They don't come a whole lot weirder than this, but you get the benefit of bounces when you crash the net like he did here. Staal's pass should have been a plain old turnover.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 10:24 Soderberg (Seidenberg, Smith)
-1 Eric Staal - Clean faceoff loss in the defensive zone.
-1 Sekera - No excuse for leaving someone completely untouched in front of the net off a faceoff. He could have at least put a stick on Soderberg here.

3rd 10:29 Boychuk (unassisted)
-1 Malhotra - This shift was such a disaster that I actually had to do a bit of research to figure out why there wasn't a center on the ice. From what I gather, Malhotra was jumping off the ice for Staal at about the same time the Bruins came into the defensive zone. That led to a domino effect of Dvorak moving to center, Ruutu trying to cover the slot and Boychuk finally being unopposed when the puck came to the point. I'm decently sure that Malhotra was the guilty party who as the center should never have left the ice in transition. I would love to see some kind of video confirmation.

ES GOALS FOR

2nd 5:49 Bellemore (Dvorak, Bowman)
+1 Bellemore - He might not be an offensive whiz, but little flashes of offensive intuition like this are really promising. Not only was it a nice give-and-go, but strong decision making for a defensive d-man.
+1 Dvorak - Simply recognized the opportunity and made the smart pass.
+1 Bowman - Created the opportunity with a bit of good forechecking and strong work along the boards. Also drove the slot nicely to open up room for his linemates.
+1 Malhotra - Well timed pressure at the blue line, keeping the puck alive for Bowman.

2nd 12:51 Sekera (Eric Staal)
+1 Sekera - Prettiest goal of his career, I'm sure.
+1 Eric Staal - Nice job cutting off the dump-in and transitioning quickly with a pass rather than trying to rag it.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 0:17 Nyquist (Ericsson, Zetterberg)
-1 Faulk - Just a dreadful turnover, not unlike the one against Anaheim. Put the defense and goaltender in a terrible position.

2nd 2:37 Helm (Abdelkader)
-1 Nash - It can't feel good to get completely and utterly burned by Abdelkader.

3rd 15:58 Nyquist (Zetterberg)
-1 Hainsey - This is the kind of thing that drives Tripp nuts, a defenseman pinching with no particular purpose at a vulnerable moment. Killer, uncharacteristic mistake by Hainsey.
-1 Faulk - Similarly, he pinches without a passing lane. Seeing as he has a wide view of Hainsey's pinch, this was neither necessary nor prudent.
-1 Tlusty - Got hung out to dry somewhat on the double-pinch, but it's still his duty to know that he's the last man back and has a guy drifting right behind him. He had no business trying to skate up and challenge the loose puck.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 13:31 Smith (Soderberg, Bartkowski)
-1 Lindholm - Caught completely flat-footed in his own zone.
-1 Dvorak - Another case of a winger floating away from the point to provide no influence on the center lane. The result is that he's late getting to the puck around the boards, which leads right to the offensive chance for Boston. This seems to have been a trend for a few games.

OT 1:28 Krejci (Iginla, Boychuk)
-1 Gleason - Laughably poor skating and positioning for a veteran defenseman in OT. Not only is there the poor footwork that gives Iginla an initial rush right up the middle, but watch how Gleason drifts behind the net as Krejci walks out in front to score. I'm not even giving Murphy a minus here because it's damned near impossible to defend a play when your partner completely bails out like that.

ES GOALS FOR

+1 Jordan Staal - Aside from the assist, he started this sequence with a clean faceoff win.
+1 Faulk - Smart, effective pinch to keep the possession alive for Jordan.
+1 Dwyer - A little lucky, sure, but that's actually a pretty nifty shot to throw on net when the goalie's not expecting it. Even if it's saved, Tlusty was right there for the garbage.

2nd 6:09 Ruutu (Eric Staal)
+1 Eric Staal - Best pass he's made all season.
+1 Ruutu - Won a 150-foot race with Michalek to get that shot.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 1:07 Spezza (Zibanejad)
-1 Murphy - A clean faceoff win shouldn't turn into this kind of scramble. Murphy's just a bit too weak on pucks like this one.
-1 Harrison - It's one thing to get his skates tangled and fall down the first time, but Zibanejad simply shrugged him off to take possession and then Spezza stepped right around him for the rebound. Again, weak sauce.

ES GOALS FOR

1st 6:44 Faulk (Tlusty, Malhotra)
+1 Malhotra - Nice grinding work to get the puck up the boards.
+1 Tlusty - Likewise, puck support to get the puck up the boards.
+1 Faulk - Solid shot to take advantage of the screen.
+1 Dvorak - Provided puck support in the corner and then took a crosscheck to create the critical screen.

2nd 1:50 Ruutu (Eric Staal, Sekera)
+1 Gerbe - Prevented an easy zone exit for the Devils by using his speed and compete level to create a turnover.
+1 Sekera - Made a risky but correct pinch to get the puck back down low for Staal. He really had to trust Gerbe here.
+1 Eric Staal - Brilliant use of his vision and reach.
+1 Ruutu - Nice finish.

2nd 8:16 Hainsey (Dvorak, Sekera)
+1 Dvorak - Really a brilliant rush to get through the neutral zone, into the zone and curl the puck back to the point. I'd like to see this a little more out of him.
+1 Malhotra - 1/2 of the double-screen in front of Brodeur.
+1 Bowman - The other half of the screen.
+1 Hainsey - Recognized where his forwards were going with the play and put a nice quick shot through the screen.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 4:21 Zajac (Zubrus, Greene)
-1 Bellemore - If you're gonna jump the pass like that, you better get it.

3rd 8:30 Greene (Elias)
-1 Sekera - Just the tiniest bit too soft in the corner, which caused him to get caught reaching and lose control of the sequence. This should have been pinned to the boards at worst.
-1 Faulk - Let a forward get behind him, resulting in the screen on Ward.
-1 Dwyer - He had already drifted too low to defend the initial dump-in, now he gets sucked all the way to the faceoff hashmarks and can't recover.

+1 Skinner - As noted in the GDT, he clowned Schneider on this shot.
+1 Murphy - It wasn't much, kind of an ugly off-balance half-slapper, but it was the right play.

2nd 6:34 Jordan Staal (Faulk, Hainsey)
+1 Faulk - Insane pass.
+1 Jordan Staal - Nice job fining a seam.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 18:20 Fayne (Zubrus, Jagr)
-1 Skinner - Floating around in the neutral zone, waiting for his teammates to feed him easy offensive opportunities rather than playing basic defense.
-1 Lindholm - A large part of the problem on this play was Lindholm getting rubbed out too easily along the boards, leaving a huge hole at center ice that floaty Skinner failed to recognize.

3rd 8:43 Loktionov (Brunner, Ryder)
-1 Boychuk Malhotra - Weak getting the puck up the boards, resulting in a turnover that caught everyone going the wrong direction.
-1 Harrison - He has to know better than to jump that play at the blue line on a quick transition.
-1 Murphy - He randomly falls down even more than Gleason. This time, it cost him the ability to make a play on the shot.

3rd 13:52 Zubrus (Merrill, Jagr)
-1 Skinner - Again, just a total lack of focus in his own zone. Frustrating to watch.
Hainsey could be eligible for a minus here, but IMO he was picked off by semi-legal interference and didn't really have a chance to defend Zubrus given the circumstances of the shot.

3rd 16:31 Jagr (Zajac)
-1 Bowman - You just can't turn over the puck in the middle of the ice during a line change.

ES GOALS FOR

2nd 0:39 Jordan Staal (Hainsey, Dwyer)
+1 Jordan Staal - Nice zone entry, hard wrist shot and dirty-goal followup.
+1 Bowman - Started the sequence with a blocked shot followed by some delicate transition play at his own blue line.
+1 Hainsey - Jumped into the play and created a picture-perfect diamond on the breakout, ended up finding the rebound for a critical second shot.
+1 Dwyer - The 4th part of the diamond, drove the net and got his toes as close as humanly possible to the crease, allowing both Hainsey and Jordan to get followup shots.

2nd 0:49 Gerbe (Eric Staal, Faulk)
+1 Eric Staal - How awesome would it have been if he had scored on that one-handed backhand shot? Anyway, he pretty much made this goal happen with a clean faceoff win and bull-like zone entry.
+1 Faulk - Second game in a row that he split the defense with a beautiful pass.
+1 Gerbe - He loves to shoot the puck, and this was a situation where you really wanted a guy like that to find the rebound.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 15:48 Sestito (Garrison, Dalpe)
-1 Malhotra - Got caught flat-footed and ended up just running around chasing the puck. Everything fell apart from there, as both Bowman and Komisarek were pulled out of position to help with coverage.

2nd 1:16 Kesler (Hansen, Higgins)

1st 18:20 Fayne (Zubrus, Jagr)
-1 Skinner - Floating around in the neutral zone, waiting for his teammates to feed him easy offensive opportunities rather than playing basic defense.
-1 Lindholm - A large part of the problem on this play was Lindholm getting rubbed out too easily along the boards, leaving a huge hole at center ice that floaty Skinner failed to recognize.

3rd 8:43 Loktionov (Brunner, Ryder)
-1 Boychuk - Weak getting the puck up the boards, resulting in a turnover that caught everyone going the wrong direction.

-1 Murphy - The short breakaway wasn't his fault, but he had that deer-in-headlights look on the rebound.

Totals
+1 Faulk
+1 Nash
+1 Jordan Staal
-1 Bowman
-1 Boychuk
-1 Harrison
-1 Lindholm
-1 Murphy
-1 Skinner

How did Boychuk get a minus in a game he didn't play? Is Vagrant paying you off:sarcasm:

ES GOALS FOR

1st 10:20 Skinner (Eric Staal)
+1 Ruutu - This is Ruutu at his best. Got some speed with the puck through the neutral zone, then chased his own dump-in to create an opportunity on the forecheck.
+1 Eric Staal - Took advantage of some soft board work by the Caps.
+1 Skinner - Smart move to shoot the puck at the goalie's hip before he was set, not even picking a target so much as catching him napping.

2nd 11:18 Skinner (Harrison, Peters)
+1 Skinner - Rocket of a wrist shot, I didn't know he had this in him.
+1 Harrison - Heck of a breakout pass, Justin Faulk approves.

2nd 15:02 Tlusty (Dvorak, Harrison)
+1 Tlusty - This was like watching Tlusty last season, a combination of skill and physicality.
+1 Harrison - Not sure he meant for it to happen quite this way, but he took a smart shot and was rewarded.
+1 Malhotra - Paid the price in the corner to get the puck to Tlusty, and then provided the key screen in front of Holtby.
+1 Dvorak - Also part of the screen, and he acci-purpo-dentally managed to make something out of Harrison's shot.
