ES GOALS FOR

1st 17:12 Jordan Staal (Semin, Faulk)
+1 Jordan Staal - Great timing on his break up ice, beating Backstrom to the little seam created by the defenseman's pinch.
+1 Semin - How perfect of a touch was that on his pass?
+1 Faulk - Good solid headman pass that Semin could deflect.

ES GOALS FOR

1st 4:35 Tlusty (Dwyer, Nash)
+1 Tlusty - Maybe not the prettiest goal he'll ever score, but he released the shot at just the right moment for the screen to blind Bishop.
+1 Nash - Calmly collects the puck in the defensive zone, leads the breakout, and I'm pretty sure he was the guy who shielded Bishop from seeing the puck.
+1 Dwyer - Simple fundamental hockey, making safe transition plays and driving the net.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 16:12 Hedman (Filppula, Killorn)
-1 Harrison - His missed hit on Filppula turned a well-defended situation into a scramble. Everything after that was a domino effect of teammates trying to cover each other's assignments.

OT 2:16 Gudas (Thompson)
-1 Hainsey - Uncharacteristically dumb pinch by such a conservative defenseman. There was really no need for it.
-1 Skinner - I'm not saying it was a dive, but come on. Skinner is strong enough not to get thrown like this, not to mention flinging his stick and taking a peek at the ref while in the fetal position. If he makes any kind of effort to play hockey here, he's easily in position to backcheck.

ES GOALS FOR

3rd 9:06 Semin (Jordan Staal, Gerbe)
+1 Jordan Staal - I guess sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, but that was still a nice hustle play. (I'd be pretty pissed with the ref if I were a CBJ fan on that play.)
+1 Semin - As Tripp aptly points out, that's not the easiest shot for a righty. Nice finish.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 9:45 Anisimov (Atkinson, Dubinsky)
-1 Faulk - Simply gets burned on pure speed due to a slow pivot.
-1 Sekera - Maybe gets caught off-guard by Faulk's slow reaction, but the second guy is still his responsibility.

2nd 15:39 Tropp (Letestu, Jenner)
-1 Faulk - A lot of small things added up on this play, the first of which was Faulk's half-hearted swipe at the puck that put him out of position to face up to Letestu.
-1 Eric Staal - There it is: the old Eric Staal coast n' poke. Instead of drifting and jabbing in the general direction of the puck, he could have been rushing to cover either Letestu or the slot.
-1 Ruutu - Corey Tropp has 2 goals this season. He scored this one by skating right past Ruutu, brushing aside his weak stick check and barreling into Peters. That's just pitiful, even for a winger who was covering his half-assed center.

3rd 15:58 Johansen (Foligno, Letestu)
-1 Tlusty - That's a horrendous, inexcusable turnover in the closing minutes while nursing a lead. The defensemen didn't stand a chance at breaking up that rush.

3rd 17:26 Skille (Anisimov, Wisniewski)
-1 Gerbe - This was a weird, screwed-up bit of neutral zone defense. I think the critical mistake is Gerbe's -- everyone else seemed to be playing for an aggressive trap, whereas he was just filling a lane for a moment so he could get closer to the bench. When he vacated that lane, both Jordan and Bellemore seemed caught off guard.

ES GOALS FOR

1st 19:58 Sekera (Jordan Staal, Gerbe)
+1 Gerbe - His energetic forecheck threw off a tired Pens breakout.
+1 Jordan Staal - Good boardwork, and he managed to find Sekera wide open under pressure.
+1 Sekera - Pretty much a perfect shot given the circumstances.
+1 Semin - Kind of got screwed out of an assist here.

2nd 0:30 Gerbe (Semin)
+1 Semin - Makes up for his mistake on the Crosby goal by hustling to a puck on the boards, and getting it back on net.
+1 Gerbe - It's always fun to see Gerbe outmuscle a guy 7 inches taller than himself.

3rd 17:31 Bowman (Nash, Dwyer)
+1 Bowman - Honestly, this shift was so dominant (almost a full minute of cycling and possession) that it doesn't need to be broken down in detail. Everyone on the ice made multiple positive plays to keep it going.
+1 Nash
+1 Dwyer
+1 Hainsey
+1 Murphy

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 0:16 Crosby (Neal, Maatta)
-1 Semin - He wasn't put in the best position to get to that puck on the boards, but the bottom line is that he had responsibility for that puck not being an outright turnover.
-1 Sekera - Couldn't really have played it any worse than he did, with Crosby ending up all alone in front.

3rd 1:58 Conner (Jokinen, Neal)
Goaltender Error - Peters - I want to blame this on Murphy for getting turned inside-out by a scrub, but Conner was still in no position to score on that weak-ass backhand. Awful goal for Peters to allow, especially given the game situation.

3rd 13:15 Engelland (Orpik, Jokinen)
-1 Hainsey - He was reallly slow in pivoting on the initial dump-in, giving Jokinen too much time and space to make a play down low.
-1 Ruutu - That was a big miss on the half-boards, putting Skinner in a bad place trying to cover two guys high.
-1 Murphy - The defenseman simply can't let a guy sit in the goalie's lap like that.

OT 1:03 Neal (Jokinen, Engelland)
-1 Hainsey - I'm not really sure why he played this so badly. He just fell behind the play for no evident reason, perhaps surprised by Neal's speed but still...

ES GOALS FOR

2nd 1:36 Gerbe (Semin)
+1 Semin - His strong play on the forecheck was the catalyst for the play.
+1 Hainsey - He took a fairly large risk in pinching all the way down to the corner, but that bit of puck support was crucial in preventing the Leafs from negating Semin.
+1 Gerbe - Great job finding the soft-spot in the defense and using that quick release to surprise Bernier.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 16:56 Kessel (Bozak)
Goaltender Error - Ward - There's no excuse for allowing a goal from below the goal line.

2nd 13:42 Kessel (van Riemsdyk, Bozak)
-1 Hainsey - Holy cow, is that terrible defense on a 2-on-1.
-1 Bellemore - Caught completely flat-footed on a slow developing play, just a lack of situational awareness.

2nd 14:58 Kulemin (unassisted)
-1 Skinner - Managed to accomplish the one thing you absolutely should not do when the puck is coming up the boards, which is kick it out to the middle of the ice for a wide-open slapshot.

3rd 4:58 Ranger (Bozak)
-1 Skinner - Another case of falling down 'theatrically' at the wrong time. An NHL player simply has to be strong enough on his skates to not flop on the ice due to minor contact in front of the net.
-1 Eric Staal - His extremely poor read at the point led directly to the scramble in front.

ES GOALS FOR

3rd 4:07 Eric Staal (Skinner, Bellemore)
+1 Bellemore - A key pinch to keep the puck in the zone and deliver it back to Skinner.
+1 Skinner - Intentional or not, he put the puck where it needed to be.
+1 Semin - He didn't get an assist, but essentially pushed a Hab to make the puck go to Staal
+1 Eric Staal - Seeing him score a clutch goal reminds me of old times.

3rd 8:16 Malhotra (Boychuk, Ruutu)
+1 Malhotra - Beautiful give-and-go play to find open ice in the slot.
+1 Boychuk - That's a difficult pass, and a brave one.
+1 Ruutu - Dirty work in front of the net, and sacrificed an innocent stick in the process.

OT 3:27 Semin (Hainsey, Eric Staal)
+1 Semin - How ridiculous is that turnaround shot of his? His wrist muscles must be made of molten steel.
+1 Hainsey - Gorgeous pass. Fantastic.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 1:20 Eller (Galchenyuk)
-1 Faulk - Whether it's his fault that the puck was mishandled behind the net is iffy, but losing the board battle gives him the minus for sure.
-1 Eric Staal - He simply has to pick that pass off.

2nd 14:24 Pacioretty (Subban, Desharnais)
-1 Sekera - Extremely weak on Pacioretty in front, allowing his opponent to basically reach around him for a shot.
-1 Dvorak - Seemed to get caught up in the linesman somehow, permitting Subban to face up to Faulk and open the passing lane.

Totals

Game 41 @ Washington Capitals

4-3 OT Win

ES GOALS FOR

2nd 1:44 Malhotra (Bowman, Ruutu)
+1 Ruutu - He did some outstanding work on the boards to secure possession, and then made a sharp pass to catch the Caps cheating.
+1 Bowman - He didn't have to do a lot here, but he was well positioned for the breakout and used his speed to maintain the odd man break.
+1 Malhotra - Impressive play from a guy who isn't known for his speed or shot.

2nd 4:34 Skinner (Murphy, Eric Staal)
+1 Skinner - For scoring the goal, obviously, but also for grinding the puck off the wall for Staal to take out of the defensive zone.
+1 Eric Staal - Nice shifty move out of the d-zone, and he also drove the defensemen to the net and past the juicy rebound.
+1 Murphy - Like Skinner, he did the work in the defensive zone that started this breakout, and then jumped smartly into the rush, unloading a shot that the goalie couldn't handle.

OT 1:20 Skinner (Murphy, Malhotra)
+1 Skinner - Simply finished off the play.
+1 Murphy - Again, doing the work in the defensive zone that opens up a scoring opportunity.
+1 Malhotra - For the second time in this game, he gets his feet moving in the transition game and makes the straight-ahead play.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 0:49 Ovechkin (Johansson, Alzner)
-1 Hainsey - This is a really tough play to penalize, but Hainsey pretty much deflected the puck into his own net. Goes back to the old principle of either blocking the shot or getting out of the way.

2nd 3:02 Brouwer (Backstrom, Johansson)
-1 Sutter - This kind of crummy play is what gets a 4th liner sent to the AHL.
-1 Hainsey - Again caught in an awkward position due to the turnover, but his deer-in-headlights reaction didn't help.

2nd 3:54 Oleksy (Beagle)
This one is a genuine fluke, a harmless shot that redirected off Hainsey and into the net. Unlike the first two, there was absolutely nothing he could or should have done differently.

ES GOALS FOR

2nd 6:57 Malhotra (Dwyer)
+1 Dwyer - What an awful play by MacDonald. Kudos to Dwyer for not messing up the play in disbelief.
+1 Malhotra - Actually a pretty nifty shot, as Nabokov had reacted relatively well to an insane turnover.

2nd 13:12 Jordan Staal (Dwyer, Gerbe)
+1 Jordan Staal - This whole sequence was an outstanding display of teamwork on zone entry, but it started with Staal making a fine backcheck to secure the puck after a lost faceoff, then turning in transition and finding an uncovered seam in the Isles' defense. This is the kind of 2-way play that he's being paid big bucks for.
+1 Faulk - It's a little thing, but look at the way he moves the puck to the center lane before passing to Sekera, and then cuts up the middle to occupy the Isles' backside defender while Staal gets to the middle. Small positional decisions make a big difference.
+1 Sekera - Made the correct play quickly and crisply to get the puck up to Gerbe.
+1 Gerbe - Simple, effective chip off the boards to Dwyer.
+1 Dwyer - Perfect no-look backhand pass to hit Staal in stride.

2nd 14:09 Sutter (Skinner, Sekera)
+1 Skinner - The whole play stems from his harassing De Haan into a turnover, then taking advantage in transition.
+1 Sekera - Again, makes the quick and simple play up the boards.
+1 Sutter - I've never played goal, but I'd imagine that it really pisses a goalie off when he stops Jeff Skinner on a breakaway only to have Brett Sutter punch in the rebound.
edit: +1 Semin - Taking the Isle defender to the net and screening him from the rebound.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 7:41 Tavares (Vanek)
-1 Bowman - Taking a page out of MacDonald's book with the ludicrous turnover.
-1 Hainsey - Yet again he gets caught in an awkward situation, but manages to make things worse. Diving at the puck served no purpose, and Khudobin might actually make that save with better D support.

ES GOALS FOR

1st 4:28 Semin (Skinner, Ruutu)
+1 Semin - Just ridiculous that he would even think to do this in the heat of the moment.

3rd 16:29 Skinner (Ruutu, Semin)
+1 Liles - It's risky to pinch so low at this stage of a tied game, and a lot of defensemen would have just lobbed that loose puck stupidly at the net to be blocked and come back the other way.
+1 Semin - Took a really nasty hit from behind to make the play here. Let nobody call this guy selfish.
+1 Ruutu - Bothers Hutton on the initial shot, then shrugs off a check to make the critical pass.
+1 Skinner - Quick release, accurate shot. He also did a nice job finding a soft spot in the Preds' coverage.

ES GOALS FOR

1st 2:33 Boychuk (Sutter, Lindholm)
+1 Boychuk - Makes a pretty good dump-in and then follows through with a nasty little backhand.
+1 Lindholm - Nice move out of the corner, hopefully we get to see more of that playmaking ability as he develops.
+1 Sutter - Not exactly the most high skill play in the world, but he did a good enough job to prevent a potential turnover and get the puck back to the middle lane.

1st 17:33 Dwyer (Jordan Staal, Gerbe)
+1 Sekera - Too bad he didn't get an assist on this play. Every now and then he shows these flashes of offensive ability and it's like, where did that come from?
+1 Jordan Staal - Nice work on the forecheck to not only get to the puck, but to come out with a clean possession.
+1 Gerbe - I got a nice little screenshot of FOUR Leafs standing around Gerbe in front of the net. Horrible defense, yes, but that's the benefit of simply going to the net and refusing to be moved.
+1 Dwyer - Basically skated around stick-tapping until scoring a garbage goal. He's that guy, but he's our that guy.

2nd 3:39 Liles (Boychuk)
+1 Liles - Most satisfying goal of the Canes' season so far?
+1 Boychuk - He flat-out hustled his way to this assist, beating at least a couple of Leafs in a footrace.
+1 Lindholm - In the category of tiny ugly things that make a difference, his persistence against Carter Ashton was a key element in springing the rush.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 14:14 Lupul (Raymond, Kadri)
-1 Bellemore - The goal is the end result of his bad turnover on the breakout, followed by lunging ineffectively at Kadri and then horsing around so that he never gets back to cover his own assignment. Just an overall poor shift.

2nd 16:10 Dubinsky (Atkinson, Tyutin)
-1 Harrison - I'd like to see Khudobin make that save, but why is he facing an uncontested shot from the faceoff dot on an even-man rush? Harrison has to step out a little more than that for goodness sake.

For the Sutter goal against the Islanders, I don't know who it was crashing the net but they deserve a plus. If they hadn't done that, it's quite possible the Islanders player that tied him up would have stopped Sutter instead

Good catch... I'm pretty sure that was Semin, meaning they actually had a line of Skinner-Sutter-Semin on the ice. I propose that they be called the "WTF" line.

Hope you find the time to catch up. Just imagine we had something like this for every NHL team for every season. Would be invaluable for the HOH board.

Ok, now that I'm finally clear of both the Top-60 Defensemen project and the Eric Lindros trade project, both of which were massively time-consuming, I finally have some time finish this one up.

Of course the season is over now so it's less timely to have this info. On the other hand, a painful post-mortem of the regular season might be a welcome distraction from the swirling vortex of despair that is the offseason. #caneshockey

ES GOALS FOR

2nd 5:40 Eric Staal (unassisted)
+1 Eric Staal - Beastly solo effort.

3rd 6:14 Hainsey (Liles, Tlusty)
+1 Hainsey - Boy was he ever completely wide-open. Which leads me to...
+1 Liles - It's a good thing that rebound came straight to Hainsey, because otherwise it's inexplicable that Liles didn't pass the puck to him. It all turned out for the best, but jeez...
+1 Tlusty - Nice job finding the point man off the cycle.
+1 Semin - Also did a nice job on the cycle, particularly near the goal line.
+1 Eric Staal - Likewise, he helped that bull-rush of a zone entry and then went to work on the cycle.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 7:32 Palat (St. Louis, Johnson)
-1 Gerbe - Literally all he had to do was put his stick on the ice to close the passing lane. Inexplicably he just watches the puck go right by.

1st 15:07 Kucherov (Pyatt, Malone)
-1 Dwyer - First he does a poor job of denying Pyatt a lane to the net, then bobbles the puck right to Kucherov. Brutal shift.

2nd 0:24 Purcell (Gudas, Carle)
Goaltender error - Khudobin - The defense wasn't exactly airtight, but ultimately the play was reasonably well-defended. There's not much you can do when the goalie fails to find his post and slides away from the net.

2nd 8:12 Barbiero (Brewer, Palat)
-1 Semin - Maybe his intentions were in the right place, since the Palat was open and cutting to the slot, but Semin just kind of floated down to the general vicinity and drifted there.
-1 Eric Staal - Semin doesn't drift away from his assignment if Eric is locked onto Palat. At a minimum, he was 50% of a communication problem.

ES GOALS FOR

+1 Semin - The Flyers commentator says he needs to "put his jaw back in its joints" after seeing that shot.
+1 Eric Staal - Nice work finding a loose puck and transitioning it quickly.

2nd 13:38 Gerbe (unassisted)
+1 Gerbe - I guess this is our GOTY, hell of a move by Gerbe.

3rd 13:50 Tlusty (Sekera, Faulk)
+1 Sekera - Good example of how Sekera learned to QB our offense, in this case to attack the guy who had broken his stick.
+1 Faulk - He could very easily have taken a low-quality shot, but had the presence of mind to look for Sekera arriving back at his point.
+1 Tlusty - Quick hands down low, these are the goals we need him to score.
+1 Semin - Nice work screening Mason and creating space for other players down low.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 19:25 Giroux (Voracek, Raffl)
Goaltender error - Khudobin - The blind turnover was bad enough, but if you watch the last replay it's clear that the shot was going way wide of the net until Dobby knocked it in.

5-3 Win

ES GOALS FOR

1st 12:28 Skinner (unassisted)
+1 Skinner - Looks like a goal you'd see in a video game. Simply abusing a bad team.

2nd 13:11 Semin (Sekera, Faulk)
Amazing shot, but unfortunately he doesn't get credit here as it was scored during an odd-man, delayed penalty situation.

3rd 7:25 Semin (Eric Staal, Tlusty)
+1 Tlusty - Rewarded for sticking with a broken play, refusing to let it die and creating an opportunity.
+1 Eric Staal - If that was an intentional pass to Semin, then wow.
+1 Semin - He had almost nothing to shoot for, and got it through somehow.

3rd 9:50 Sekera (Ruutu, Komisarek)
+1 Sekera - Those shifty little moves at the blue line are just so effective at creating space.
+1 Nash - Screened the goalie.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 10:15 Hodgson (Ott)
-1 Harrison - Pretty straightforward, that kind of stone-handed play just can't happen.

2nd 3:20 Flynn (Varone, Foligno)
What the hell was this crap?
-1 Komisarek - I don't have the slightest clue what he was doing on this play. Instead of turning and chasing down the dump-in, he makes a half-hearted attempt to take an interference penalty and then just kinda drafts back to the boards and out of the play. ECHL-caliber defense right there.
-1 Harrison - So rather than defend anyone, he's just gonna stand there and watch. Except for when he decides to swat pucks out of the goalie's grasp and directly to the opponent. OK.
-1 Dvorak - Try watching the clip and focusing only on Dvorak. Maybe someone can explain to me how his role is any different than an orange traffic cone drifting down the ice and coming to rest against the boards.

3rd 0:48 Ennis (Stafford, Konopka)
Goaltender error - Khudobin - I feel like I'm being harsh on him, giving him an error for the third game in a row. But that was a horrendous sequence for Khudobin, ending in Ennis' PGA-quality 50 foot chip shot into the net.

Totals

+1 Sekera
+1 Semin
+1 Skinner
+1 Eric Staal

6-3 Win

ES GOALS FOR

1st 10:30 Gerbe (Malhotra, Komisarek)
+1 Malhotra - That little burst of speed around Phillips was just enough to disrupt his attempt to move the puck away from the forecheck.
+1 Gerbe - Helped a little by some bad goaltending, but this is Gerbe's typical style of taking any available shot.
+1 Komisarek - Did a decent enough job of settling the puck and moving it up ice for a transition opportunity.

2nd 6:05 Eric Staal (Semin, Hainsey)
+1 Semin - Outstanding deke and pass in his own zone, changing Hainsey's sloppy pass into a breakaway opportunity for Staal.
+1 Eric Staal - Torched Spezza 1-on-1, beating him from the Canes goal line all the way up the ice.

2nd 6:37 Malhotra (Gerbe, Bowman)
+1 Bowman - The tiniest bit of disruption on the backcheck was enough to spring Gerbe the other way.
+1 Gerbe - Passed up the shot (!) and made a hell of a centering pass.
+1 Malhotra - Strong finish.

2nd 13:23 Nash (Sekera, Dvorak)
+1 Dvorak - I'm glad he ended up with an assist on this play -- the reason Nash had all day to shoot was because Dvorak took THREE Sens to the net and created a huge open area in the high slot.
+1 Faulk - Kept that possession alive by stepping up on Colin Greening at the right instant.
+1 Sekera - Once again making defenders look silly when they try to pressure him on the perimeter.
+1 Nash - Fortunately Greening decided to play some lazy joke defense and stopped skating while Nash settled the puck twice and picked a corner.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 13:58 Turris (MacArthur, Gryba)
-1 Skinner - I'm not sure why he decided to go rogue and start playing RD on this shift. It would have helped if he had followed through and actually stayed at that position, instead of bailing to the point as soon as the action got heavy. This entire play is a sequence of vacuums created by Skinner wandering around instead of playing his position.
-1 Lindholm - Wingers have to recognize a defensive switch, even if it's a pointless and illogical one.

2nd 19:37 Zibanejad (Ryan, Conacher)
-1 Komisarek - Come on, man  Beaten by a rush off the faceoff, then coasts back and isn't even close to defending the slot. All with under 30 seconds left in the period and right after a Canes goal. That's bad hockey.
