I would have prefer Krebs between the two but I am very pleased with this pick. I love the way he plays. I had some doubt about him until he played in the U18. He was very dynamic. Great motor and speed to burn. A 1-2 punch of Mack and Newhook (and possibly Compher/Bowers at 3C) will give teams a lot of trouble going forward.

Congrats Avs!!!!

Avs really lucked out that both Newhook and Krebs fell into their laps at 16. That said the double edged sword is that they had better be right and see Newhook end up as the better player.

How we view this draft will very likely end up depending on how he turns out vs the could have beens in Turcotte and Krebs.

Having suffered the Oiler Lotto Rule twice Colorado deserves to get damn lucky in the draft, while Edmonton deserves to squander McDavid.

Not a huge fan of this pick. Don't get me wrong, Newhook is a very good player and I absolutely buy him having a lot of high end potential outside of the top 10. Nonetheless, I don't see him ever reaching his high end potential. You know, that's okay for me since all he needs to be is a 2nd line centre who can take pressure off the 1st line and I suggest he can do that.

He's primarily a playmaker who has top-end vision, but I am very much a fan of his shooting characteristics. His accuracy is terrible and needs a lot of work, but all the shot attributes that you cannot teach like heaviness and power are absolutely there. As I said in a previous post very long ago, if he had the accuracy, he would easily have been a 50 goalscorer in the BCHL. If he's able to increase his accuracy, he can definitely become a 2nd line version of Vlad Tarasenko.

Now of course, you're going to hear how amazing of a skater he is. I don't think he needs to work on straight line speed, this area I think he's really good in. Agility, explosiveness, and anything around the net is pretty poor and will need a couple years. Just don't be fooled by scouting reports who say he's this truly gifted skater, because a lot of it is aesthetic and playing against weak competition (same league for two seasons in a row).

I would like to see him do more 5v5 once he gets his feet wet in the NCAA, because I thought he was okay even strength, but pretty freakin' unbelievable on the powerplay. I can't wait to see what he can do at BU, but I would be surprised if he was a one and done player compared to Turcotte. I think he's at least two seasons away and at least one year in the AHL for me. Avs might potentially rush him though similar to Jost if he's able to really bring out his offencive skills early.

Passing on Krebs for him though broke my heart and Caufield going one pick earlier is so unfortunate. He's Avs property so I am going to cheer as much as I can for him, but Avs made a mistake passing on Peyton.

Yeah.... Even as a Newfie I dont love the pick.

I mean I dont hate it and it was pretty well projected. As soon as we were on the clock and Newhook was still on the board you just knew it was coming.

But I dunno. I watch him play and I dont see elite speed. I see a lot of the same issues facing Jost right now.

We'll see what happens and if Newhook hits his ultimate upside I think he's a future 1C. But I dont see him hitting his ultimate upside so I have concerns.

Don’t know much about the player but he looked great at the U18s. More dynamic than Krebs at that tournament
His play at the U18s made me raise him up more in my final list, but also context is needed and a ton of his best plays came on the powerplay. I would consider him a powerplay specialist at the moment still trying to figure out his strengths at five-on-five.

Krebs is the opposite type of player, much more influential and a better workhorse 5v5.

I'm on the fence with this pick. I want to be excited but he seems a bit like the usual Avs mid 1st round "safe" pick.

One more thing...some people here talk about his skating and speed, yet Button has his skating at 3/5 and says he'd go higher in the draft if he could be quicker?

Newhook most definitely isn't a safe pick, I think he will eventually have a narrow ceiling and floor as a 2nd line player since I think he's going to have some trouble in the NCAA. However, the lads offencive skills are legit.

I guarantee you lot that Avs had Newhook higher because they get a longer development time with him since he's going to the NCAA instead of the CHL. Going to the NCAA is already a +5 on his Final Fantasy character for Hepple, lol.

I agree with it not being a safe pick.

Just the fact that he plays in the BCHL makes it hard to know what he will be.

Krebs probably would have been safer, but I think this kids got higher upside.

Krebs’ Achilles injury scares the stuffing outta me. Not saying passing was the right call, though.

Agreed, however the main debate is how likely is Newhook going to reach the upside that is higher than Krebs? Krebs has O'Reilly type of impact on the game with Sebastian Aho's vision and playmaking traits. Newhook has more, but I also see some Matt Duchene-ish problems there. Not really the peaks and valleys, but more of the inconsistencies in his game.

On Newhook his production is similar to Jost's their draft year. No offense to Jost, but is this a red flag? The highlights looks good.

I may be the odd one out here but I do not see much of a tool set here that matches Jost, I think this guy is not only clearly a better skater but has a much higher compete level and a much better shot.

I honestly have similar concerns about Newhook and league he plays. Krebs would have been my choice, but the Achilles injury might be a little more serious. A skate blade cut through his protective sock, which normally doesn’t happen or require surgery. His drop in the draft might also be a concern with other teams.

Newhook is a riskier pick, but the potential is much higher. Maybe a Makar type of potential. He excelled at the U18 which alleviated some of the fears. His learning curve is definitely higher, but I do love this pick.

Comparisons to Duchene is an accurate description of the player that Newhook might become.

I'd much rather have Krebs over Newhook as well, but I imagine the injury + position gave Newhook the edge. Sucks seeing Caufield go right before us, but a consolation prize of getting to chose between Krebs and Newhook is probably the next best thing that could of happened.

I personally think newhook will be a Beast. He's going to play with boldy in the NCAA and I think they'll make some noise together too. Great pick.
