This is shaping up to be a carbon copy of last year. Few lucky wins and Aquilini on the radio saying management is doing a good job. Last year it was that ridiculous WD Jack Adams talk in December.

Then the reality that the roster is put together horribly brings it all tumbling down.

Bring in whatever coach you want. The fact is we have a management team that doesn't know how to run hockey ops from development to pro-scouting to contracts and the CBA.

The degree of overhaul needed on the entire front office side of this franchise is terrifying.

I would like to see our young players show something physically. Especially Virtanen and yes even Gaunce. Why is it the vets who have to step up always. Horvat is playing great but he is the teams 2nd best fighter he does not need to fight but he doesn't need to put up with crap either. He should use his stick more and play witha bit more of an edge. not his job but if a young guy stepped up he would be loved.

You know who has fought a surprising amount of times the last year and a bit? Jared Mccann with 3 fights.

Looks suspiciously identical to last year and the year before. For the third year in a row we will be a horrible hockey team before half the season is through. At least we can look forward to picking a whopping six times in the draft again.

Ducks way more ready to play than we were. Team has been trending bad (despite lucky win in Calgary) and game turned into a real gong show at times. PP looks to be back on the fritz and PK not good without Tanev.

Good

Horvat - far superior to every other Canuck

Gagner - thought he had good two way effort. Seemed to have some real jump in his skating and drew some penalties

Boeser - forechecked created only goal and was getting to the front of the net well. Excellent sign since this is where he will make his living.

Markstrom - could have been major ugly without him.

Bad

Edler - ok he's coming off injury but he looked slow. Least likely to join the rush and most likely to get beat off the boards. Just looked clumsy.

Hutton - lugging with the puck - looks like he may be hurting. Got tied up in traffic and not good around his net. Been a Jekyell and Hyde season for Hutton so far

Del Zotto - another defense man looking tired. Could say Anahiem speed very much exposed our back end.

Dorsett - nice to see him step in for Horvat but he contributed little anywhere tonight. Did not look good on the PK

Pouliot - not strong around the net or along the end boards. Needs to improve shot on the PP and be more of danger. Skating was sluggish and he got running around in his end. Could see some things that have not allowed him to stay in the League creeping into his play. Needs to be crisper in his plays than this.

Others

Gaunce - might well call him bad. Don't think he is helping the Sutter line. For all his size goes down easy and not good with the puck. Typical of his play was skating by the net on the possible set up by Sutter. Doesn't show very much at all in terms of offensive instincts or quickness. Also doesn't get to the net well. Unlike Boeser gets boxed out and can't seem to penetrate. Did stay in the play and looked like he could play dump and chase a bit. Gaunce had lots of company in his mostly mediocre play.

Sedins - making mistakes they never made earlier in their careers. Also there are many times when they should shoot rather than make the extra pass. I don't think they have any confidence in their shots. Neither likely to score much this year. Might, as a pair, be fortunate to hit 25 goals. Don't seem to have chemistry with Virtanen.

Sutter - tailing off. Might just go back with Granlund on his line.

Good tank loss (victory?) in that Anahiem, without Getzlaff and Kesler, might be a team that could be a lottery contender.

That was gross. This team without Tanev will plummet to the bottom of the standings.

Struggling to think of a player other than Markstrom who didn't suck tonight.

Remember about four hours ago when everyone was laughing about how bad Anaheim’s lineup was?

Haven't had occasion to question too many of Green's lineup decisions, but sitting Burmistrov for Gaunce was head-scratching.....Just not sold on Gaunce....not an NHL-caliber skater who brings nothing to the table in terms of offense. But overall, definitely one of the ugliest performances of the season, and a reminder of road-games under Willie last year.

a pretty good litmus test is underway for his value and the quality of the other guys without him.
I'm not really buying into the doomsayers that are saying we're sunk without Tanev...He's only one player, and if thats all it takes to sink the whole team..we may as well just forfeit the season.

Ugly game..no energy, and not much effort...on to the next one.

And this is what would happen if we trade Chris Tanev

You mean finish at the bottom of the league like we have the last two seasons?

Tanev wont save this team, and when he comes back he wont save it either, we are simply a bad team and thats why some of us want to continue selling assets such as tanev to build for the future. Especially before he is so injury prone his value takes a further dive.

Keep in mind even if we did want to play the tanev card, we couldnt compete with a ducks team who is missing a 1c, 2c, and a top 2 d.

Not even close...Its easy to be overly negative after a loss, but I don't see this team getting ready to embark on a 10 game losing skid like last year .

Just wait for it. One injury away. People were saying the exact same thing at this time last year.

But we've had injuries already....Edler, Boeser, Eriksson, Granlund, Tanev and even Nilsson have already lost games to injury.

This wasn't pretty, but one ugly loss like this isn't any more indicative of our season then shelling Calgary the other night.

I'd like to see Virtanen on a different line. Not a knock on him or the twins, more a different reason to tune in and see how it goes. Currently it's just a harmless cycle that inevitably gets broken up and a 3 on 2 the other way. I'm curious if he's getting such little ice because of his fitness or the fact that line gets exposed.

Im gonna say exposed, not a knock on Virts though, more on the sedins being older

I agree that Virtanen should be taken off the Sedins' line in trying to find someone who he can have better chemistry with.

However, anyone paired up with the Sedins will have to play the Sedins' cycle game, which hasn't been effective for the past 2+ seasons.

Eh, that’s a lot of names but not many games. Granlund, Boeser, Tanev (so far) were all a whopping *one* game. Nilsson is the backup so that hardly hurts the team. Eriksson is so bad it likely helps to have him out.

Edler is the only significant injury up to this point. It could easily get worse.

Ducks were playing with playoff like purpose and intensity tonight few could match it. Their defense was without Fowler and still looked incredible.
Report Card:
A
Bo Horvat- keeps the roll going. Is really flying right now and is showing some nice creativity.
C+
Sam Gagner- another strong game.
Henrik Sedin- was looking inspired. At least looked like a threat
D.Sedin- same
Brock Boeser- needs an extra gear but was really driving play to the danger areas.
Sven Baertschi - was decent at maintaining possession and cycling. Lucky goal. Faded late and needs to be better on the PP
C
Alex Biega- was really getting stuck in and pushing the play forward
Michael Del Zotto- was ok. Struggled with the Ducks puck pressure
Eric Gudbranson- pretty quiet night...which is a good thing lately
Derrick Pouliot - Had a really nice start and faded badly. Shows some encouraging signs.
Brandon Sutter- One of the few who could keep pace. His wingers were anchors tonight
Jake Virtanen- Needs to play with Sutter. They can be good on the counter attack rush. Was decent
Jacob Markstrom- kept it from getting ugly but wasn't exactly stealing the show.
C-
Alex Elder- Pace was too much for him in his 1st game back.
Ben Hutton - wildly erratic player right now. Forwards weren't helping him much.
Thomas Vanek - was invisible and ineffective.
Markus Granlund - was ok early then fell off a cliff.
Derek Dorsett- was bound to come back to reality. Ineffective game and bad PK ing
Brendan Gaunce - worked his butt off but need much more if he's gonna play decent minutes.

Miller was mighty. Lots of shots called off because Miller was right there. How many guys double clutched? Shot count reflects this.

Silfverberg slew the Canucks. The team was not ready to play after the intermission.

There are some roster issues, which everybody saw. Some players looked painfully out of place.

The team's make-up is affected by the Edler/Tanev switch. Some adjustment time is needed.

Canucks were stymied by a goalie with good book on them and a desperate team taking chances.

Those players have barely missed anything in terms of games and some of those players are hardly missed anyways.

Edler is the only one who has actually been out for a handful of games. We're not even 20 games into the season...those man games lost are nothing.

Pouliot..I can see some offensive upside but he needs to be sheltered and sheltered LOTS. If he's playing any significant kind of minutes against tough competition he is getting shelled every single night.

Can't remember what goal it was, but he was so confused on where he had to go and what he had to do it was almost comical.

I don't see his offensive abilities being able to outweigh his defensive disabilities in order to crack our top 4 for the future. He's a reclamation project and I think he'll top out as such.

In before this is quoted saying it's far too early, give him time, he's still young, yeah yeah yeah, we've heard it all for various players, but we are seeing exactly why he never helped the Pens and exactly why he's not still in their system. It should've been a sign on the Pens moving him especially after what they have done with unpteen players within their system lately.

Shelling Calgary? The final score wasn’t indicative of how the game went. The Canucks were very lucky to win that game. Calgary doesn’t have a goalie. Markstrom made some great saves and some lucky saves or else Calgary could have blown it wide open early on.
