This issue is that Sergachev is a long-term project. If he's not playing, he's not learning. He may not be the best option today but the idea is that in ~5 years he'll be a dominant force. Sitting him for a game here and there is fine but sitting him for awhile would absolutely f*** up his development.

Serg isn't necessarily unreliable defensively, his offensive mindset just hasn't been there this year. He just needs a goal. I find myself complaining about stupid things Hedman does more than Serg.

Cernak has a lot of potential but still needs some time in the minors. He's about where I'd put Sergachev at the start of last year. Without question I have found myself irritated at multiple things Cernak has done, but it's not that I blame him either - he's a rookie.
