Murray on Team 1200 (following the Presser)
- "We knew with Pittsburgh, we were overmatched"
- "a disappointing year in that we never really got a chance to look at our team this year". "something like 7 guys out at a time", "frustrating".
- Look forward to maturity of Silf, Zibby, Pageau, Gryba
- You never want a player to get hurt, but Paul (Maclean) was very willing to put young players in a position to grow. Huge benefit coming into camp next year because of this.
- Message to us: get a little stronger, and work on quickness.
- We have to address one defencemen. Decision might depend on Gonchar - still uncertain on his status.
- We need to address lack of offense. Might look at acquiring a top-6 forward.
- "We need to do enough to show the players we want to get better"
- other teams impressed at our talent, we have lots of pieces other teams have expressed interest in. We have pieces to make a move for a top-end guy if we want.
- Alfie deserves time to figure out what he wants to do. He can still play at a good level. Would love if Alfie came back for another year... or two.
- Having Alfie on the roster makes it easier to convince UFA's to come here.
- Murray "wants to stay in the game". He had a great year.

One thing that I think is noteworthy about Murray's presser was that he TWICE alluded to the fact that Ottawa is in a position to work with a team who is tight to the cap and acquire an impact player that way.

Pretty much straight-up admitted the Sens would be taking full advantage of their good cap situation.

I know it's a long shot, but I really hope Alfie decides to come back for 2 more years so we can make a real shot at the cup for him. 2 years, 10 million or something like that. I would hate to see Alfie retire without having won a cup.

He also said there were some FAs he was interested in.

I didn't hear the question, so I don't know if it pertained to FAs or trades, but he said he'd look to add a 27-to-30-year-old who can score. Did I get that right?

I'll start striking names off this list: http://capgeek.com/ufa-finder

Honestly if we win our first cup without alfie it will bring a sour taste to me, if alfie is in management can he still get his name on the cup?

For guys who should hit UFA, my top in that criteria are Horton, MacArthur, Stalberg and Penner.

Brunner and Clarkson will likely be resigned.

Boyes might be an intriguing option if he is looking for Latendresse money

Depends on the role he has with the organization. If we were going to win a Cup, though, they'd make sure he's in a position to get his name on the Cup and be able to lift it over his head.

FYI Murrays's presser is currently being replayed on The Score; it's about halfway through.

The three names that stand out to me in the 27-29 age category are Horton, Clarkson and Bickell.

Clarkson and Horton - if they go to UFA, which is no sure thing - are sure to be two of the more soughts after UFA's out there.

In Horton, we will definitely be getting a guy that can score 30 playing with Spezza, but will be demanding in the $5-$6M bracket as a UFA. He might even get $6M+, depending on the market. Would love to get him, but get a bit scared about term on the deal. If he wants 5 years, that would be a risk for the organization, as he might already be past his best before date. I think the Bruins just might let him walk.

In Clarkson, we will get a much bigger physical presence than Horton and a guy that is one tough mofo, but I'm not sure he'll be the true scorer we need. Yes, he scored 30 a few years ago with Parise, but has never scored as many as 20 in any other year. He is more likely a 20-25 goal guy with Spezza, but I'm ok with that. He will be in the $4-$5M range I suspect, although I have a feeling he will resign with the Devils. They have loads of cap room and really need him back.

In Bickell, obviously this is not a home run pick, and he might get resigned by the Hawks too, but he is a big body who is physical and could probably score 15-20 with the Sens. He also has the local connection from his 67's days, so this might be a fallback guy for the team to go get, although no one is sure whether he is a top 6 forward for sure either. Hawks have some cap issues.

The wild card? One of the teams with the biggest cap issues is the Flyers, and while I would LOVE to get Simmonds, I don't see that as very likely. The Flyers have to consider him as one of their untouchables to play alongside Giroux, Schenn, Voracek and Couturier going forward. But one forward with a big contract who had a really poor year (only 8 goals), and might have overstayed his welcome there is Scott Hartnell. At $4.2M it isn't a massive deal, although there is a ton of term left, which might be the reason the Flyers want to get out from under it now. He is 31 with a lot of hard years on him. But for the Sens, slotting him in with Spezza or Turris would add a lot of space for those guys, and he has the hands to still score some goals. We might be able to get him for something less than one of our elite prospects, or in the end, perhaps for a song if the Flyers are really up against it and there are no other suitors.

In Vancouver, their big issue is getting rid of Luongo's deal, but they might also consider moving Burrows for the exact same reason as Hartnell. 32, bit of an off year, still tons of term left on his $4+ deal. Wore out his welcome as they change their culture there. But he could look good beside Spezza too.

Did I miss where Stephen Weiss was re-signed?

He hasn't that I know of, but it looks like he will be playing with a recurring injury next year, and I don't think he's ever played wing.

Turris and Weiss are too good for 3c so theres no fit there imo.

As much as I hate Burrows, I would welcome him here. I think as a 2nd line winger with Turris, he could do something similar to what Greening does, but put up more points. 4 mil is a little overpaid though, but someone like Clarkson will be much more overpaid imo.
