Post-Game Talk (GBU): #03 - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly -- I like Eich II

The Good -
- Eichel with the huge momentum goal and eventual GWG
- The powerplay getting it together.
- Moulson's three point night. That pass to O'Reilly was I thought his best play.
- Risto.
- McCabe. He can stay.
- ROR getting it going. He was more himself today.
- McGinn with a two-point outing too? What on earth...

The Bad -
- The Chad on the 2nd goal.
- Nick Foligno. Not a great example Cap'n.

The Ugly -
- McCabe eating stick and no call. I was unimpressed with the officials trying to keep the Jackets in the game. I've never understood the mentality that there needs to be "makeup" calls when a team is being clearly outplayed.

Buffalo loves Eichel.

Good:
- Easily ROR's best game so far, hopefully there's more like that from him.
- Eichel's ridiculous.
- Powerplay getting it done.
- Risto got multiple shots through from the point.
- Pysyk/McCabe.
- Moulson, as long as he's not carrying the puck in.

Bad:
- Afinogennis
- Franson in his own zone.
- Weak calls to even out the penalties by the refs.

Ugly:
- "Yichel"

ROR was the best player on the ice all day, I thought. What an absolute delight that he's a Sabre.

The Ugly -
- McCabe eating stick and no call.

He went down on one knee to block the pass or shot and got hit on a follow through.

I didn't even care if we won after that Eichel goal. In fact, I could get hit by a bus tonight and my life was worthwhile.

Johnson's rebound control gave them some chances they didn't bury.

Franson's slow, and it's scary.

Good:

Yes but he wasn't brought in for his stellar defensive play; what he was brought in for was exactly what he did today and that was fire a whopping 6 shots on net.

This is the best I've felt about a Sabres' game in a long time.

In addition to what people have already said:

Good:
- Eichel had some nice defensive plays in addition to his work in the neutral zone and offensive zone. He doesn't look anything like an 18-year-old rookie.
- Reinhart does still get pushed around sometimes, but the NHL is where he belongs.
- I'm very impressed with Pysyk. He seems to always make the right play, and he was effective in making the quick outlet pass to relieve pressure.

Bad:
- The PK definitely still needs some work.
- The PP came on at the end, but it was still ugly at times.

Ugly:
- Rod Brind'Amour

A lot of obvious good to take from this game: Eichel is a superstar, O'Reilly was a game changer, Moulson played the best he's played in a long time.

That said, i think Gorges and Risto deserve a lot of credit for their strong play early this season. Gorges has been 10 times the player he was last year and Risto is progressing very, very nicely.

The defense had very little bad tonight. I don't know if that's indicative of the forwards being back, how well they played (Risto in particular), or just that the Jackets were off today. Perhaps a bit of all three.

- Ennis' sweet moves failing 50% of the time. Yikes.
- Johnson's rebound control/puck handling is so bad.
- Seeing a lot of people criticize Foligno and Franson when they both actually played pretty good games.

McCabe's mobility helped. Risto is almost back in full form, Gorges is playing better than he ever did last year, and Pysyk is as steady as they come. With Bogosian back, that D will start to look halfway decent. I'm just not sure who they're flipping to the left side and what that will do to the equation.

As for today, I can't add anything else to the Eichel discussion except this

This concerns me. If the forwards play to their potential, they're good. The D can be mediocre if they stay healthy. That goaltending though... Johnson should have had his paw on that second goal.
